  1. Holy crap! A demolition I support: http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/12/cleveland_landmarks_commission_4.html#incart_river_home What's a good thread to discuss redevelopment?
  2. Many European main squares have similar frontages (i.e. large cathedrals, etc), but do a nice job filling the surroundings spaces. One idea to add life to these sections for at least one of the months is a month-long European-style Christmas Market. Perhaps it can be sponsored by Old Stone Church if anyone objects to the term "Christmas" :) For example: http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2015/12/09/germany-christmas-markets/77029632/ Combined with some sort of stand alone retail/café extensions.
  3. Children's Museum reaches $4M in capital campaign to renovate Stager-Beckwith Mansion By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer on December 10, 2015 at 7:32 AM, updated December 10, 2015 at 10:52 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – The capital campaign to renovate the vacant Stager-Beckwith Mansion on Euclid Avenue as the new home of the Children's Museum of Cleveland has zoomed from $800,000 to $4 million in a year. That means the campaign is roughly $500,000 shy of the amount needed to trigger construction on its first phase, and close to raising half of the $9 million needed in all to complete the project. "The momentum is great," Maria Campanelli, the museum's director, said Wednesday during a tour of the architecturally impressive 1866 mansion, formerly home to the University Club. Campanelli's progress report shows the museum, Northeast Ohio's only institution dedicated to children from birth to eight years of age, is making rapid strides toward the renovation, a project necessitated by loss of its existing home. Established in 1981, the museum has occupied a remodeled Howard Johnson's restaurant at 10730 Euclid Ave. in University Circle since 1986. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2015/12/childrens_museum_reaches_4m_in.html#incart_river_home
  4. At the old Mayfield Cafe. The owner Dominic Gogol is a good guy: http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/tavernoflittleitaly120715.aspx

  6. Regarding the Stark building and the older Hawley Hotel. There used to be a wall of 5-story buildings there. The Hawley Hotel is now that craptastic parking structure. If the jail and lower buildings portion of the Justice Center are ever demolished, this could be a brand new intersection for Downtown Cleveland combined with the Weston project.
  7. Very sad to hear. I used to live on Coltman for 5 years. As mentioned, the UCPD stations literary sits on Coltman Ace at the Euclid intersection. Glad to hear Noah was relatively ok. I hope they catch these two guys. Terrible. EDIT: I just asked one of my friends who still lives on Coltman and he said he did hear about the hold up near the church parking lot but not this situation. Bur he also told me we was once in an altercation on Coltman and walked to the UCPD to report the guy, and was told "call 911" instead.
  8. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson: City would welcome Syrian refugees By Leila Atassi, cleveland.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on November 20, 2015 at 3:13 PM, updated November 20, 2015 at 3:22 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson this week joined dozens of other mayors of major U.S. cities in affirming that Syrians seeking refuge from their war-torn homeland are welcome here. "The City of Cleveland has always opened her arms to refugees, regardless of where they are from," Jackson wrote Wednesday in an emailed statement. Jackson joins Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings -- who all said they would help resettle Syrian refugees in their cities, despite the recent wave of panic among politicians about the perceived connections between Syrians, the Islamic State and last week's terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 129 people. Mayors of 18 other cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago also signed a letter sent to President Barack Obama in September, pledging to work with the administration to help resettle Syrian refugees in their towns. http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2015/11/cleveland_mayor_frank_jackson_57.html Syrian refugee's terrifying journey from fear and terror to new hope in Cleveland By Michael Heaton, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on November 20, 2015 at 1:55 PM, updated November 20, 2015 at 4:26 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – "Mary" is a 27-year-old Syrian refugee who came to the United States and Cleveland four months ago. It has been a harrowing journey, almost a fatal one. It started five years ago in Syria. Missiles and gunfire targeted her neighborhood. Warlords and extremists began to kidnap, rape and murder people close to her. A friend was beheaded for wearing a cross. Two female cousins just disappeared. She and a few close relatives fled, by road, for Lebanon. Gunmen tried to stop them and, when they sped past the checkpoint, opened fire. The driver's mirror was shattered, but no one in the car was wounded. Then came Saudi Arabia, and more religious persecution, discrimination and fear with the rise of the Islamic State. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/11/syrian_refugees_terrifying_jou.html

Great set! I love all of the unique views. It was sad to see the Steve's Lunch pictures though, as well as the building in picture above, which we also lost to a fire this year :( Which building is now lost? Left or right?
  10. That building is so ugly. Why don't they just tear it down and move HQ to NuCleUs or 515? I'm assuming that building is much older than it looks, but just has an ugly facade on top, like the Schofield did. Anyone know if that's correct? It's an old brick building underneath that modernist facade. Is this what Stark's building used to be??? http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/postcards/id/1811/rec/6 Compared to: https://www.google.com/maps/place/w.3rd+and+st.clair/@41.5003915,-81.6968867,3a,75y,220.04h,105.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s_StjNjvc6ImJLUxUNMClgw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x8a35d4022af04504!6m1!1e1

  14. At this point, I would much rather have it made into green space than that uninspired, one-story sh!t structure. - CWRU alumnus
  15. Platform's Beer Co.'s new Gypsy Brewing to open soon By Marc Bona, cleveland.com on November 12, 2015 at 8:00 AM, updated November 12, 2015 at 9:08 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Platform Beer Co. will enter the holidays by giving and getting. It's giving by being a part of the Skylight Foundation's holiday toy drive to benefit the Cleveland Police Foundation. And it's getting more space when Gypsy Brewing opens. Platform's plans for Gypsy are moving ahead, said Justin Carson, one of Platform's owners. The brewhouse was scheduled to be delivered Wednesday, Nov. 11, with fermenters coming within the next two weeks, he said. The operation will be in the old Leisy Brewing Co. at 3506 Vega Avenue, near Fulton Road and Interstate 90. Gypsy and Platform are less than a mile apart. The 120,000-square-foot space will serve a dual purpose: Platform will use 90 percent, with New Albion Brewing there as well. New Albion is a revitalization of what is known as the first microbrewery, established by Jack McAuliffe in 1976 in northern California. But the remaining space is for brewers who need more room but who cannot afford or don't want to commit to their own, permanent location. This way, they can lease space at Gypsy. http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2015/11/platforms_gypsy_brewing_to_ope.html
  16. This was a tough loss to swallow, especially after #12 Thomas More was heavily favored to beat Case by 2-3 scores by most predictions. Case was leading 26-14 late in the 3rd qtr. Case had 5 turnovers total (including one in the Red Zone) and 4 FGs in the Red Zone...and still almost won! Very frustrating as Case could and should have won this game. Two 4th qtr turnovers sealed the fate for the Spartans. No arguing against that the team played their hearts out. Coverage from the PD: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/11/case_western_reserve_falls_to.html I don't know if there's still any chance of Case being selected for the playoffs, but they should be on the National radar after today's game. There is still the "Academic Bowl" next week vs Carnegie Mellon who is surprising good this year after smacking down University of Chicago today 52-7. A win versus our rival could help, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out with the NCAA selection committee.
  17. Finally, some great coverage from the Plain Dealer: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/11/case_western_reserve_qb_rob_cu.html And some surprising coverage from the Chicago Tribune: http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elgin-courier-news/sports/ct-ecn-college-notes-rob-cuda-st-1105-20151104-story.html This game this Saturday is essentially a playoff game (pending the rivalry game vs Carnegie Mellon)...would be a good game to attend.
  18. So is this the new report that is to be released Monday? http://www.downtowncleveland.com/media/253192/q3_2015_spreadscompressed.pdf
  19. Whoa! So I take it that it will no longer be named the "Horseshoe Casino?" Although, I bet a Cleveland "Hard Rock Casino" name would go over well....or is that also the same ownership?
  20. Case Western Reserve football is now ranked #18 in the country for DIII NCAA: http://www.d3football.com/top25/2015/week9 HUGE home game coming up this Saturday vs #12 Thomas More.

  22. Huge! I was also impressed with Key Bank's hold on the Pacific NW (from an earlier acquisition as well). They are everywhere in Seattle/Portland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeyBank#/media/File:Keybank_footprint_2010-05.png
  23. Fantastic! I find it hard believe there are no other options for expansion other than demoing one of the few remaining original houses. In recent memory, CWRU did demo a nearby house on Bellflower http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jXffsm4Wr3Q/S2dY8t6kF9I/AAAAAAAAHUw/QN1BABL5auA/s400/CaseWestern2.png
