  1. I give you....the nationally ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans! #23 (of 200+ team?) http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2015-16/releases/20151026jcjtxe http://www.d3football.com/top25/2015/week8
  2. A few projects in the Circle affiliated with CWRU and CC www.youtube.com/watch?v=oonowPZ4SZs
  3. Darnit....I have a friend who works there as well. Moved back to Cleveland a couple years ago for the job too.
  4. Should we be worried about the incorporation in Maryland? A bit similar to Eaton shifting its HQ to Dublin, Ireland for tax reasons. Forest City shareholders approve company's REIT-conversion plan By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 20, 2015 at 3:11 PM, updated October 20, 2015 at 5:25 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A well-known Cleveland real estate company will become a real estate investment trust on Jan. 1, after receiving a thumbs-up Tuesday from the majority of its shareholders. Forest City Enterprises, Inc., received shareholder approval for the change during a special meeting at Tower City Center in downtown Cleveland. The company, which has its headquarters offices in the Terminal Tower, is transforming from a C-Corp into a REIT mainly for tax reasons. Real estate investment trusts are largely exempt from paying federal taxes, but they must distribute most of their taxable income as dividends. Shareholders then pay taxes on those dividends. The REIT will keep its headquarters in Cleveland, but the corporate entity was created in Maryland. Most publicly traded real estate investment trust incorporate in Maryland because of the state's REIT-friendly laws, which offer broad liability protections, buffers against hostile takeovers and relative flexibility when it comes to shareholder votes and bylaw amendments. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/10/forest_city_shareholders_appro.html#incart_river_home
  5. I highly suggest supporting our local Case Western Reserve Spartans football team this Saturday at 6 PM at Disanto Field in beautiful University Circle. NEO currently has 2-top 25 teams ranked (#1-ranked Mount Union and #18-ranked John Carroll). If Case Western Reserve wins this week, I suspect they'll be the third to break into the top 25 as well. http://www.d3football.com/top25/2015/week7 This game vs #15-ranked Washington and Jefferson (who hail from dreaded Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase geography) comes as arguably the most important game since the Dan Whalen era. This game has league title and playoff implications on the line...not to mention puts CWRU back on the map for NCAA DIII football. This team is fun to watch and has a high powered offense. And there's plenty of time to walk over to the Euclid Tavern Happy Dog to catch the rest of the Ohio State-Rutgers game starting at 8 PM :)

  7. Can someone explain this city ordinance and why Waterloo Brew was forced to close? Malley's chocolatier, reggae promoter to open bar-club in Cleveland By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 19, 2015 at 6:00 AM, updated October 19, 2015 at 9:07 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Packy Malley has been hanging out in bars for 30 years. Now he has one to call his own. The reggae promoter, Malley's chocolatier and wedding DJ will be taking over Waterloo Brew, located in the Slovenian Worker's Home, 15335 Waterloo Road, in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood. By February, Waterloo Brew was shut down and left dangling in limbo, due to a Cleveland ordinance that stipulates that a brewer cannot also operate a bar more than a mile away from the brewery. "They own four other bars around town all outside the one-mile radius and were not about to sell those establishments," says Malley. "When they had to close Waterloo Brew due to the license problem, they called me up and wanted to set me up in the bar business." http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/10/malleys_chocolatier_reggae_pro.html#comments

  9. The Healthline and Redline are nearby... :) This area does not need to apologize for not having parking. It arguably sits at the best location of public transit outside of Downtown and right along a marked bike lane. Portland, OR has been battling this dilemma a lot in recent years. Much of the new residential construction is being built with zero parking spaces: http://www.portlandmercury.com/BlogtownPDX/archives/2012/11/12/what-happens-when-you-build-housing-with-no-parking http://usa.streetsblog.org/2012/08/21/portlands-parking-free-apartment-building-frenzy/ Here's an article for Boston, Seattle, and Portland: http://usa.streetsblog.org/2013/12/10/real-estate-trend-parking-free-apartment-buildings/
  10. Godspeed! Cleveland Orchestra embarks on 2015 tour of Europe with goal of 'stoking the fire' By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer Email the author on October 14, 2015 at 6:00 AM, updated October 14, 2015 at 6:08 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Northeast Ohio or Northeast Austria. Severance Hall or the Philharmonie de Paris. Blossom or Belgium. To the Cleveland Orchestra, location makes little difference. Everywhere it goes, including every stop on its 2015 tour of Europe, the objective is the same: Make new fans and energize old ones. Its high standing long since secured, the orchestra's main goal abroad now is advancement. "For me, it's always about stoking the fire," said Mark Williams, the orchestra's director of artistic planning. "It's not about maintaining. It's about going to the next level and continuing to build our audiences. We can't rest on our laurels. We always have to go in and play better than the last time." http://www.cleveland.com/musicdance/index.ssf/2015/10/cleveland_orchestra_heads_off.html

BUMP I think it's finally time to adjust our city ordinances to stop trying to make Cleveland look so suburban...from the Uptown thread replacing Mi Pueblo/Pinatas: The owner appeals for relief from the strict application of the following sections of the Cleveland Codified Ordinances: 1. Section 355.04(b) which states that in a “C” area district, maximum gross floor area cannot exceed ½ the lot area. 3,850 square feet of floor are permitted and 38,704 square feet of area are proposed. 2. Section 357.01(d) which states that a front yard setback is required when specifically shown on Building Zone map. 10 foot front setback is required and 1’ to 0’ foot front setback is proposed. 3. Section 357.09(b)(2)© which states that an interior side yard of not less than ¼ the height of the main building is required (in this case is 15’) and a 10’-11” interior side yard is proposed. 4. Section 357.08(b)(2) which states that a rear yard of not less than one-half the height of the building (or in this case 30’) is required and a 1’ rear yard is proposed. 5. Sections 352.08 through 352.12 which state that an eight foot wide landscaped transition strip with 75% year round opacity is required where property abuts Multi-Family Residential District to the rear and no landscaped transition strip proposed. 6. Section 349.04(a)(f) which states that accessory off-street parking is required at the rate of one space per dwelling unit, plus one space per 500 square feet of retail space. 48 accessory off street parking spaces are required and none are provided. 12. Cleveland 1 of 2 finalists for national beer 'canvention' Cleveland and Omaha, Nebraska, are being considered for the 2017 gathering, said BCCA canvention planner Dave Gausepohl, who attended the Lake Erie chapter's 'Octobeer Blast' show Sunday at the North Olmsted Party Center. Next year's convention is set for Portland, Oregon. This year's – the largest in 25 years - drew about 2,000 people to Milwaukee. While it's "too early to tell" which city has the upper track, Gausepohl said, "there is no reason that Cleveland can't mimic those numbers." The decision will be announced in December or January, he said. http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2015/10/cleveland_1_of_2_finalists_for.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  13. CWRU's sophomore QB is getting better each week. The kid had 3 passing and 3 rushing touchdowns today. CWRU moves to 4-1: http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2015-16/releases/20151010q35oxk
  14. That class from 2014 I posted last year is seriously carrying the team. Their sophomore QB and RB and putting up some points this year after a disastrous past season. If you're tired of watching losing Browns, come check out a city of Cleveland-based high powered offense. Four more home games left, including this weekend: 9/5 at Chicago L, 31-30 9/19 vs. St. Vincent W, 49-14 9/26 at Thiel W, 41-6 10/3 at Bethany W, 59-20 10/10 vs. Waynesburg 1:30 PM 10/17 at Geneva 7:00 PM 10/24 vs. Washington and Jefferson 6:00 PM 10/31 vs. Washington U. 12:00 PM 11/7 vs. Thomas More 1:00 PM 11/14 at Carnegie Mellon 2:00 PM http://www.d3football.com/teams/Case_Western_Reserve/2015/index
  15. The RNC Shuffle: Other Major Events Reschedule Around Cleveland's Big Event Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7:21 am By ideastream's Brian Bull With an estimated 50,000 attendees, the 2016 Republican National Convention is projected to give a “bump” to Cleveland’s local economy in July. But the RNC is bumping some other big events that are also expected to draw crowds to the city. The city is giving first dibs to the GOP to book events at more than a dozen venues, and that means some shuffling trying to book other events. http://www.ideastream.org/news/bumper-crop-rnc-means-other-events-must-shuffle

  17. Fan launches petition drive to keep Alternative Press Music Awards in Cleveland By Chuck Yarborough, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on September 29, 2015 at 10:35 PM, updated September 29, 2015 at 10:47 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Painesville resident, Tia Silbaugh, has used an online petition site to put together a plea to Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson to keep the Alternative Press Music Awards Show in Cleveland in 2016. Because the Republican National Convention will be here next summer – and the bulk of the city's suitable venues are already promised to the G.O.P. – Alternative Press founder and publisher Mike Shea reported that the two-year-old show likely would have to be relocated. To see the change.org petition, which calls on Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson to take steps to ensure that the show remains here, without interruption, go to tinyurl.com/apmaspetition http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/09/fan_launches_petition_drive_to.html
  18. Comments are getting pretty scary on Cleveland.com saying we don't need the world-known Alternate Press. Fellow Urbanohioers, please comment in support to counter these ignorant people! This event is only going to grow and was the #1 thing tweeted globally during the 2014 awards show.
  19. Cleveland leaders and citizens...we need to figure this out NOW. We cannot let such an event slip to another city...hold on tight!! Republican National Convention could cost Cleveland next year's Alternative Press Music Awards CLEVELAND, Ohio – Next year's Republican National Convention could inject as much as $400 million into the local economy. But it could also cost Cleveland one of the city's premier award shows. The Alternative Press Music Awards, put on by Cleveland-based Alternative Press magazine, honors the best and brightest in contemporary alt-rock, from Weezer and Fall Out Boy to Paramore and Panic! at the Disco. However, the show may have to take place elsewhere in 2016 due to scheduling conflicts surrounding next July's RNC. The convention has first rights to book events at 13 venues in Cleveland, including Quicken Loans Arena, host to this year's APMAs on July 21, and Voinovich Park, home of the inaugural APMAs in 2014. "The two things that will cause us to leave Cleveland are scheduling conflicts, which I can't fault anybody for, and the fact that nobody cares that we're here," proclaims Shea. "I just remember something Trent Reznor once said: 'If you want to be famous in Cleveland, you have to be famous outside of Cleveland first. I hope that's not the case." http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/09/republican_national_convention.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  20. Thanks for resurrecting this topic. I still stand by what I said in April with our largest hold back. Cleveland needs soundstage infrastructure. Let's retrofit/convert some of our old brick warehouse buildings! Or build new in the Opportunity Corridor??? How about that idea :)
  21. This is a complete sin. Is it too late? EDIT: Where are the old Hessler St hippies when you need them?
  22. I'm flying into town to attend Indians game Saturday night (and Browns game on Sunday). Pumped for these Indians during this push. And yes, I take my vacations to Cleveland.
  23. MRN spends $2.2 million to revamp Corner Alley downtown Mary Lessick, director of sales and marketing with the Corner Alley, said the owners decided to renovate now to get it done in time for the upcoming Cavaliers season and the 2016 Republican National Convention. They also wanted to bring the property up a notch to compete with other venues on East Fourth, a popular district that was the face of Cleveland on ESPN SportsCenter broadcasts during the NBA Finals. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150915/BLOGS16/150919888/mrn-spends-2-2-million-to-revamp-corner-alley-downtown
  24. Cleveland needs to push hard now. Meaning yesterday. Like with any immigrant group, once roots are established here, it inherantly creates a magnet to attracting that same nationality. Cleveland getting in early opens the door for greater numbers down the road. Bring over the families!
  25. I'm all for this residential infill, but I wish they would incorporate more retail...especially on a main drag like this, extending the feel of Downtown.
