Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Punch Bowl Social opens Saturday on Flats East Bank: Hearty eats, snacks, drinks & more (photos) By Joe Crea, Northeast Ohio Media Group Follow on Twitter on September 14, 2015 at 7:58 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "Eat. Drink. Social." When Punch Bowl Social hosts a giant grand opening benefit for Salvation Army from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Cleveland sees the debut of a splashy new eatery and entertainment complex - the latest addition to the unfolding Flats East Banks development. Punch Bowl Social is equal parts restaurant, watering hole and Old School entertainment complex. With construction, decorating and staff-training in full swing, I got a first look at the unfolding "eatertainment" venue. The 27,000-square-foot complex, spread over two stories (a 4,000-square-foot rooftop bar and lounge is slated to open Spring 2016) is located at 1086 West 11th St. To get your bearings, Punch Bowl sits directly across from Willeyville, Lago and Ken Stewart East Bank restaurants, at the base of Ernst & Young Building and the Aloft Hotel, separated by an open expanse of land. Cleveland is a fifth location for the Denver, Colorado-based group of restaurants, with others in Denver; Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas, and Detroit, Michigan. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/09/punch_bowl_social_opens_saturd.html#incart_gallery

Bring on the Refugees! Joe Cimperman and Cleveland Leaders Talk Strategies Posted By Sam Allard on Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 12:11 PM Last week, Cleveland welcomed its very first Syrian refugee family to Cleveland. "We're looking forward to helping them rebuild their shattered lives," Dever said. After remarks by Cimperman, Mayor Frank Jackson, County Executive Armond Budish, the Ariel International Center's effusive Radhika Reddy, and Stacy Dever, breakout sessions explored individual topics related to the refugee experience: transportation, housing, education, health, etc. Cimperman said that the goals of the workshop were threefold: building relationships among city leaders and those working in relevant refugee services fields; educating one another about the issues; and creating a blue print to make Cleveland the number one city in the county for refugees in five years. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/09/10/bring-on-the-refugees-joe-cimperman-and-cleveland-leaders-talk-strategies

Can the smokestack be removed and be placed somewhere else? Essentially an urban art nod to Cleveland's hertitage?

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
I personally wish this project was condo. For that location, and the lack of new condo options in recent years, I don't think they'd have much problem getting the needed people to sign up pre-construction.

Hyperloop
With the recent news of the Hyperloop beginning construction on a 5-mile stretch next year, I was curious to everyone's opinions on the idea? More importantly on this forum -- how it may relate to Ohio? I've been reading about this idea since the beginning, but recently started to notice many of the initially proposed maps may bypass Ohio. Only one includes Cincinnati and Columbus, but no Cleveland. Although we are probably 10-20 years away from some actual infrastructure being built, how important is it for Ohio's leaders to ensure Ohio (and Cleveland) get on the preliminary plans? Elon Musk's Hyperloop dream gains speed CNNMoney-Aug 20, 2015 It started as a fanciful idea straight out of science fiction, but the Hyperloop is starting to pick up real speed. The Hyperloop is Elon Musk's vision for a train that can move passengers and cargo between cities at speeds of more than 700 miles per hour. The plan, unveiled in 2013, calls for pressurized, above-ground tubes that span hundreds of miles. Musk, who is busy with Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX, had issued an open invitation to other companies and individuals to collaborate on the project. Several startups have answered the call. http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/20/technology/hyperloop-elon-musk-progress/ Travel in a tube: Elon Musk's Hyperloop to start construction in 2016 Remember the hyperloop – the futuristic transportation system that’s faster than an airplane that no one thought possible just years ago? Well, the visionary Elon Musk’s idea just got a new lease on life: we could see construction as early as 2016. A public opening of the five-mile test track in Quay Valley, California is slated for 2018. Now, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) wants to prove they can shoulder the load that comes with creating something straight out of science fiction, and made the announcement on Thursday. The company will partner up with engineering-design firm AECOM, as well as the Swiss company Oerlikon, which specializes in vacuums – a technology that is key to the idea. The last piece of the puzzle is architectural firm Hodgetts + Fung. https://www.rt.com/usa/313071-hyperloop-musk-pneumatic-spacex/ Preliminary map ideas currently show:

^ I had similar thoughts to what E Rocc is saying. The Feast brings many people from the Eastern suburbs who may not enter Cleveland city very often. Seeing the now completed Uptown may have caused curiously for a revisit.

Cleveland.com's coverage on this as well: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/08/tremont_man_robbed_at_gunpoint.html#incart_river This is so frustrating continuing to hear about this deteriorating situation of a crime spree. If Cleveland police cannot keep up, should there be a neighborhood watch? Can businesses combine to pay for extra protection of 1-2 security members?

Cleveland: Downtown: Hilton Cleveland
Hilton Cleveland Downtown hotel remains on track and underground walkway to Huntington Garage is a possibility By Karen Farkas, Northeast Ohio Media Group August 11, 2015 at 5:42 PM, updated August 11, 2015 at 7:40 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The $276 million Hilton Cleveland Downtown hotel remains on track and on budget, the project manager told Cuyahoga County Council on Tuesday. There is still a chance that an underground walkway could be built below Lakeside Avenue to connect the hotel and Huntington Garage, where guests will park, said Jeffrey Appelbaum, the Cleveland lawyer managing the project for the county. Appelbaum said some breakthroughs in proposed engineering could overcome initial concerns about the cost of the walkway. But he he said he is not ready to provide details, including the cost. http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2015/08/hilton_cleveland_downtown_hotel_remains_on_track_and_underground_walkway_to_garage_is_a_possibility.html

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
It's ashame Cleveland can't seem to hold on to it's turn of the century density even today...especially all brick structures. Thirteen row homes is pretty substantial. Every time we lose one, another day of looking more and more generic as a city.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Ironically enough: First look: Stylish new Cleveland School of the Arts lives up to gateway site in University Circle By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer July 29, 2015 at 8:48 AM, updated July 29, 2015 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city's decade-plus, $1.2 billion school building campaign, aided with hundreds of millions of dollars in state matching funds, got off to a rocky start in the early 2000s, architecturally speaking. Critics charged that the state imposed heavy-handed restrictions that led initially to mediocre buildings with a cookie-cutter feel. The new Cleveland School of the Arts, scheduled to open Aug. 17 – less than three weeks from today – indicates that there's been a very positive learning curve. A tour of the nearly finished building on Monday showed that the new home of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District's magnet school for the arts is shaping up as a beautiful and architecturally distinctive presence in University Circle, the city's artistic, educational and medical hub. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/07/first_look_a_stylish_new_cleve.html#incart_gallery

Another steakhouse downtown...I bet Urban Farmer and Red are both cringing! This place is SPENDY...last time I at the one in Portland, the 6 of us ended up with a $1K+ tab. For investors to drop $3-$4 million for this addition strongly illustrates Downtown Cleveland has turned the corner.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
This will be a fascinating next few months / years. I see this merger as evitable and a potential blueprint for future mergers. For example, do we keep the schools and libraries independent?
