Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
Developer J. Shorey plans to turn a vacant foundry into a fish farm, arts complex (photos) By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on May 19, 2015 at 8:00 AM, updated May 19, 2015 at 8:06 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Central and Fairfax neighborhoods lost an estimated 100 jobs in 2012 when T&B Foundry closed a storied metal casting plant in a foreclosure process that left the eight-acre property vacant, shuttered and saddled with nearly $2 million in liens. Now Cleveland Heights entrepreneur J. Duncan Shorey has a proposal to transform the plant at 2469 E. 71st Street at Platt Avenue with an unusual mix of overlapping uses including a fish farm, an orchard, a studio center for artists, a farmer's market, a cooking school, and a computer server farm. The Foundry Project, as he calls it, would encapsulate hot themes in Cleveland redevelopment including sustainability, urban agriculture, and the arts as a place-making tool, plus the drive to build social equity by creating jobs in the city's poorest neighborhoods. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/05/developer_j_shorey_plans_to_tu.html#incart_river

It is also now officially green. MOCA's building, designed by architect Farshid Moussavi of London, and built in 2012, has achieved a Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED system, short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2015/05/moca_clevelands_gemlike_buildi.html

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I recently posted this comment at the Jet Blue article: I've also wondered recently if Cleveland-Akron area should only have one airport for the benefit of the region. A great example to look to is Seattle-Tacoma airport (Seattle-Tacoma has a population of 3.6 million compared to 3.5 million of Cleveland-Akron). By only having one airport, they have hub status on Alaska, Delta, and Horizon... with many, many Frontier and United flights. I really have no idea of how it could work financially (perhaps with immense federal help?), but we need to figure out how to restructure into one regional airport. Find a good location between Cleveland and Akron ... Build a brand new Cleveland-Akron airport. Then use the land of the old airport locations for new development, especially in the city limits of Cleveland. New residential neighborhoods could be built similar to Battery Park, and be completely TOD due to it being the end of the Red Line.

A little University Circle love from the NY Times: In Cleveland, Young and Old Keep Tempo of Life By JOHN HANC MAY 13, 2015 Here at Judson, young and old play nicely together, part of an intergenerational program that has led to harmonious relationships beyond the concerts. While many residences for older people are regularly serenaded by the local high school band or other area musicians, Judson Manor’s initiative has taken such interaction several steps further. The artist-in-residence program provides furnished one-bedroom apartments to three graduate students from the Cleveland Institute of Music at no charge, for the duration of their studies. In exchange, the students perform regular concerts at Judson Manor, occasionally (as was the case at this recent Friday recital) with musically inclined residents. The program began five years ago, when the Cleveland Institute, just a few blocks away, was experiencing a housing shortage for its students. A board member knew that rooms were available at Judson and approached the manor about the possibility of housing some of the institute’s graduate students, who make up about half of the student body (which currently numbers 438). http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/14/business/retirementspecial/in-cleveland-young-and-old-keep-tempo-of-life.html?_r=0

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
What the heck is going on with the Cleveland Rennaisance !?? From crains: Theona Simbrat, the Renaissance Cleveland's manager, said Marriott will continue to work with the owner of the 491-room hotel through an affiliate to 'ensure as seamless a transition as possible.' Marriott filed a WARN notice with the state of Ohio that its Renaissance Hotel Operating Co. unit would no longer employ 282 employees, who would be let go between June 30 and July 12. Can someone post a working link?

Just a little blurb, but it made me smile...so here you go: Readers find a taste of Cleveland in Las Vegas By HEIDI KNAPP RINELLA LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Gotta love those regional brands. After noticing an item in which the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council named the hot dog served at the Cleveland Indians’ Progressive Field as the best ball-park dog in the country, Roger J. Henning launched a search for Sugardale hot dogs and their traditional accompaniment, Bertman Ball Park Mustard. Unfortunately, the dog remains elusive, but readers did email with local sources for the mustard. http://www.reviewjournal.com/life/fooddining/readers-find-taste-cleveland-las-vegas

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
I always get excited when these are released... Thanks! BTW, I was heavily considering buying a Downtown condo recently at the Pointe at Gateway. Both units were bought with cash offers (still pending I believe) within days...like 1-3 days...of the listing. They're still listed on Zillow as "For Sale"...but they're both gone already.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
New apartments leasing in historic Templin Bradley Lofts in Gordon Square erin o'brien | Monday, May 04, 2015 Renovations for the 1916 Templin Bradley Company building, 5700 Detroit Avenue, are nearing completion, with 30 new apartments that will be available for move-in as early as July 1. "It's on the eastern edge of Gordon Square Arts District," says Greg Baron, housing director for the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO). "We really trying extend the district out further east and west, so this is our first major project in that section of the neighborhood." All units are currently leasing. They include nine one- and 21 two-bedroom units, although four of the spaces are two-story live/work units, for which square footages range from 1,500 to 1,900. The other units go from 690- to 950-square-feet. Fifteen of the apartments are priced at market rate and 15 are designated affordable, which was a condition for part of the project's funding. Those leasing the affordable units must fall within a certain income level. Monthly rents go from $500 to $1,100. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/templinbradley050415.aspx

Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
And the Murray Hill schoolhouse is a bunch of condos :) Alta House, in Cleveland's Little Italy, could be renovated for Montessori school (photos) By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on April 24, 2015 at 4:44 PM, updated April 24, 2015 at 5:10 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – An iconic Little Italy building that began as a nursery supported by John D. Rockefeller could become a center for children again, in a project that aims to marry old-school and new-school on Mayfield Road. Cleveland Montessori is plotting a fast-track push to move its classrooms and offices to the Alta House, at Mayfield and East 125th Street. The school must leave its 20-year home, at the nearby Holy Rosary Church, by the end of 2015. And the Alta House, a social services-minded nonprofit struggling with a century-old building and a tight budget, needs a pick-me-up. On Thursday, the Cleveland Landmarks Commission approved Cleveland Montessori's plans to renovate and expand the Alta House, with an addition that will face Mayfield. That vote is just one step in a complicated process that, if everything works out, could result in an overhaul of the complex this year. The potential partners are seeking $250,000 in Ohio tax credits aimed at historic preservation, according to an applicant list obtained by The Plain Dealer. Those credits, which will be awarded by June 30 after a competitive process, pair with federal tax credits that help cut the cost of restoring old buildings. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/04/alta_house_in_clevelands_littl.html

Lakewood wins $200,000 grant for Hilliard Square Theater demolition By Bruce Geiselman, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on April 23, 2015 at 2:42 PM, updated April 23, 2015 at 3:26 PM LAKEWOOD, Ohio – The city will receive a $200,000 grant for demolition of the former Hilliard Square Theater, and officials hope to hire a company this summer to remove asbestos from the building to prepare for its eventual demolition. Hilliard Square Theater, built in the mid-1920s, closed in the 1960s. It reopened later as Westwood Arts Theatre until it closed in 1988. Robert Dobush bought the theater and attached apartments and storefronts 17 years ago for approximately $275,000 to prevent the building from being razed. He tried unsuccessfully to find someone willing to renovate the building. Dobush, who at one time lived in apartments attached to the theater, said he has done his best to maintain the property. http://www.cleveland.com/lakewood/index.ssf/2015/04/lakewood_receives_200000_grant.html#incart_river

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Why not do what a lot on sunbelt cities are doing to consolidate their few and far between turn of the century architecture? Move it. Find the company who moved the SmartHome...Any nearby areas who could use it? There are a couple gaps on Magnolia. Or put it on E.115 street. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/10/pnc_smart_home_moves_to_new_ho.html Check out what Raleigh has done: http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/3423731/ http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2014/02/04/historic-crabtree-jones-house-moving.html http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/17/garden/so-thats-how-they-do-it.html?_r=2&emc=eta Talk about a win-win for Case Western on preservation and for somewhere in or near University Circle. EDIT: in terms of people to contact, I would suggest: Stephanie Corbett -- CWRU Director of Sustainability http://www.case.edu/cpfm/sustainability/ Jenita McGowan -- Cleveland Chief of Sustainability http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/CityofCleveland/Home/Government/Cabinet/JMcGowan Chris Ronayne -- President of University Circle Inc http://www.universitycircle.org/contact/1 I wonder if Chris could use the building for UCI? DOUBLE EDIT: Or get some CWRU or CIA student advocacy going. Contact the Student Sustainability Council or the CWRU student newspaper "The Observer"

Cleveland: Population Trends
I was in San Diego this past week and stayed the weekend. During the workday Friday, Downtown was bustling...and bars and restaurants were packed after work...it was great! Saturday morning felt more like a ghost town Downtown. Even with a seeming high residential population, most of Downtown felt empty during the late morning and early afternoon. Back again to around dinner time it began to pick up, especially in and around the Gaslamp District. It was packed again lby ate evening/Saturday night. To me Downtown Cleveland mirrors this activity. I did not notice much retail in Downtown San Deigo, which really extends this comparison for me. On the order hand, I currently live in Portland, OR. Downtown Portland has people on the streets all day, everyday. What is the major difference? Portland has very strong retail all throughout downtown. In fact, I would argue it's their nightlife that is lacking. My conclusion -- retail brings in feet on the streets for a higher daytime population.
