  3. storefront renovation fills bruno casiano gallery with new light erin o'brien | Wednesday, November 05, 2014 Longtime Detroit Shoreway fixture the Bruno Casiano Gallery has finally opened its eyes, so to speak, courtesy of a storefront renovation. The gallery, which is located at 5304 Detroit Avenue, is filled with natural light after more than 50 years without front windows. The two new windows, which were installed last week, occupy spaces that were bricked up at an unknown point in the building's past. "It used to be a speakeasy, this place," says owner Bruno Casiano, adding that the structure dates back to the 1930s and also housed a boat business for many years during the mid- to late-1900s. The $22,000 renovation included removal of the brick, installation of two eight-foot by eight-foot windows, new awnings and improvements to the front stoop, including new tiling. The project will be part of the city's Storefront Renovation Program, by which up to 40 percent of costs are reimbursed, with a maximum of $25,000 for an exterior upgrade, after the work is complete and the bills are paid. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/casianogallery110514.aspx
  4. trailside homes in slavic village gains momentum as fifth buyer takes the keys erin o'brien | Monday, November 10, 2014 Construction of Trailside started in 2013, with work focusing on streets, infrastructure, connections to Morgana Trail, and construction of the first ten homes. The development could eventually include between 70 and 100 homes, although the next construction phase is still in the planning stage. The project has been in the works for years, and the developers hope that sales will now pick up. The Trailside project represents Slavic Village Development's vision for the entire Broadway/Slavic Village area, which offers a level of affordability that is largely unavailable in downtown Cleveland or trendier neighborhoods like Tremont. As the community slowly recovers from the devastation of the housing crisis, advocates hope that the neighborhood's assets will eventually drive growth. Perhaps the most unique feature of the Trailside project is that it backs up to Morgana Run, a two mile bicycling and walking path. The Towpath is also easily accessible, and plans are in the works to connect the trail to downtown. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/trailsidehomes111014.aspx
  5. larchmere merchants celebrate completion of streetscape with 'unblock the street' party Tuesday, November 04, 2014 "This $3m project includes a newly paved asphalt road, refurbished storm sewer basins, curbs and sidewalks, permeable paver and logo sidewalk bricks, new honey locust trees, benches, trash cans, and colorful chair-back-styled bike racks designed by Tom Hubbard," says Harriett Logan of Loganberry Books in the release. "The street is looking good! We’ll have music with a live DJ, nibbles, raffles, face painting, and community camaraderie. Come celebrate with us!" The ribbon cutting and formal ceremony takes place at Larchmere and East 127th at 4 p.m. There will be kids activities and free hot dogs at Shaker Quality Auto body (12916 Larchmere) from 3-7 p.m. For those who want to keep on celebrating, the after-party is at Felice (12502 Larchmere) beginning at 7 p.m. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/unblocklarchmere010414.aspx
  6. Cleveland Orchestra selects Slavic Village for 2015 neighborhood residency By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer November 10, 2014 at 2:02 PM, updated November 10, 2014 at 2:28 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Orchestra will move slightly to the south for its 2015 neighborhood residency. After occupying West Side neighborhoods the last two years, the Gordon Square Arts District and Lakewood, respectively, the group announced on Monday that next year's edition will take place in Cleveland's Broadway Slavic Village area. "The diverse neighborhoods of Broadway Slavic Village are ideal settings for music and celebration," wrote Chris Alvarado, executive director of Slavic Village Development. http://www.cleveland.com/musicdance/index.ssf/2014/11/cleveland_orchestra_selects_sl_1.html#incart_river
  7. Designs for Towpath Trail final stretches have dramatic overlooks and an elevated piece under Harvard-Denison Bridge CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Plans for the final miles of the Towpath Trail show an elevated section traveling underneath the Harvard-Denison Bridge and a stretch in Tremont that converts much of University Road into a bluff-side path with dramatic overlooks. The plans are for the northernmost six miles of the Towpath Trail, part of the 101-mile Ohio & Erie Canalway that runs from Tuscarawas County to Cleveland. Although most of the southern canalway is complete, building the final miles from the Metroparks Reservation at old Harvard Avenue to downtown Cleveland has been complicated and time-consuming because of a patchwork of property owners and environmental issues. The remaining segments in Cuyahoga County are now expected to be completed by 2019, much to the delight of residents and others scrutinizing the "preferred route alternatives" for the Towpath Trail Extension at a meeting last week. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/11/designs_for_towpath_trail_fina.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  8. long-dormant euclid beach carousel almost ready to ride erin o'brien | Tuesday, November 04, 2014 The quest to bring the historic Euclid Beach Carousel back to life has had its ups and downs, but in the end, the generosity of donors prevailed. The Euclid Beach Carousel Society raised $1.6 million for the project, which will spring into motion on November 22nd in a beautiful new glass pavilion at the Western Reserve Historical Society. "We've gotten donations from people all over the country who remember Euclid Beach, and a lot of really strong support here in Cleveland," says EBCS Chairwoman Terry Kovel. "We say, 'Euclid Beach' and people smile." Some supporters may, in fact, find the horses more animated than they bargained for. "Our biggest problem is that nobody believes us when we say: you're going to be able to ride the horses," says Kovel. "They think it's a museum exhibit that's going to just stand there." The event will mark the eve of the carousel's grand opening to the public on Nov. 23rd. Until then, festive replica horses dot the front lawn of the WRHS. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/euclidbeachcarousel110414.aspx

  14. Cleveland hosts Refugee Summit, looks to become choice destination for 'newcomers' By Leila Atassi, Northeast Ohio Media Group on October 30, 2014 at 1:58 PM, updated October 30, 2014 at 2:14 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As political turmoil and civil war escalate in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world, Cleveland is readying itself to become home to international refugees looking for a fresh start in a safe and welcoming community, a panel service providers told members of Cleveland City Council Thursday morning. To kick off the city's first Refugee Summit, which is open to the public and will be held in the City Hall rotunda from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, Council invited representatives from a cadre of social service, healthcare and resettlement agencies to describe the challenges that refugees face and the benefits of opening the city's arms to the newcomers. In recent years, refugees have generated more than $12 million in economic activity in the Cleveland area, said Brian Upton, of the nonprofit Building Hope in the City. They have taken 650 labor jobs since 2000, bought nearly 250 houses and represented $2.7 million in state and local tax revenue, he said. http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2014/10/cleveland_hosts_refugee_summit.html#incart_m-rpt-1

  17. Love Letters: Cleveland Love Letters 10/29/14 08:49 AM ET I worked hard and when I found out I was expecting a baby with my girlfriend, I knew Cleveland would become my home again. My heart still belonged to New York but when I came home to tell our family the good news, I found something in you, dear Cleveland, something that I hadn't seen before was now shining brightly. There was a current moving through the people and the streets that I had never felt before. The stories of the river burning and the Browns sucking, the old curmudgeons scared of downtown were still there but something about you was different. There was a glow to you, dear Cleveland, and it sucked me in. You were the "New Cleveland." I fell hard for you Cleveland after I opened my first restaurant, The Greenhouse Tavern. Looking back I was so ambitious bringing a restaurant of that size to your downtown streets that, until recently, were barely filled with bodies. But I had a feeling Cleveland, and I am happy to say I was right. I fell hard for you, Cleveland, that day in April 2009 when the restaurant filled with 400 people for our "friends and family" opening. My love for you exploded that day! I continued to fall madly, deeply in love while your condos and apartments filled to capacity, while your restaurants opened and chefs filled the city. My madness for you became almost too much to bear after MOCA opened and the Art Museum that brought me so much happiness as a child built the most beautiful space inside of you, it's atrium. I fell in love with you a little bit more this summer after you hosted the Gay Games, Cleveland. Seeing our city full of compassion, kindness, and people made me so proud to call you my love. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5835088
  18. PSA: Updates on Medical Mart and Hilton Hotel to be Provided on Tuesday Posted By Eric Sandy on Mon, Oct 27, 2014 at 1:08 PM The crane operators are certainly keeping busy at the corner of Ontario and Lakeside these days. And they must, what with the RNC's de facto deadline looming closer with each passing day. The earnest beginnings of the snazzy new downtown Hilton are visible and aspirational. And surrounding the hotel framework, the Global Center for Health Innovation and the Cleveland Convention Center are prepping for the Creative Minds in Medicine Conference this weekend. The county's biggest projects are looking more active than ever. ...Which is all outwardly good news, and the public will get updates on the above institutions tomorrow when Jeffrey Appelbaum, the attorney representing the county's interests therein, will speak at Cuyahoga County Council's Committee-of-the-Whole meeting at 3 p.m. There's no word yet on what we should be expecting from the presentations, but anyone who's been watching the fun unfold downtown might want to check in. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2014/10/27/psa-updates-on-medical-mart-and-hilton-hotel-to-be-provided-on-tuesday
  19. Area's latest industrial rehab project at former Fairmont Creamery will open with full occupancy By KATHY AMES CARR Originally Published: October 25, 2014 4:30 AM Modified: October 27, 2014 8:51 AM The $15 million Fairmont Creamery rehab represents one of Cleveland's latest creative reuses of an abandoned industrial building rich in history. The five-story brick structure — constructed in 1930 as a national distribution hub for dairy products — has been repurposed from its recent largely abandoned state into a 106,000-square-foot, mixed-used project featuring residential and commercial space, and parking. The creamery rehab's completion is targeted for November. Each of the six office spaces and 30 apartments are spoken for, illustrating the latest example of the pent-up demand for contemporary industrial housing and workspace in and around the city. Each of the apartments has been rented, and a “huge” waiting list accompanies the units, Rosen said. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20141025/SUB1/310269997/areas-latest-industrial-rehab-project-at-former-fairmont-creamery
  20. Why, because we're all talking about it?!? ;) I would have taken this ugly win a thousand times over last week's loss to the Jagoffs. Crazy to think we should be 5-2 right now. Well hopefully we're 5-3 going into the first battle with Cincy after next week! Going 2-1 against teams with a combined one win still works for me.
  21. Cleveland's hospitality industry gears up for potential windfall of RNC convention By JAY MILLER October 26, 2014 4:30 AM A key place to start will be Positively Cleveland. Its convention and visitors services department is the place where meeting and conference planners go for help. The convention and visitors bureau isn't quite ready to handle the onslaught of convention vendors yet but it will be ready soon, according to spokeswoman Jennifer Kramer. Kramer added that the Cleveland RNC Host Committee will also be a touchstone for vendors once it's staffed up in the coming months. Of course, it's not too early for a business to start polishing its image and finding ways to get its name out. “A lot of the folks who will be coming in already have people who are already scouring for vendors, they are scouring online and elsewhere,” said Rick Turner, manager of new business development at Colortone Staging and Rentals. “They knew who to call in New York; they know who to call in Los Angeles and Dallas. But for Cleveland, it's a brave new world for them. We really have to put a spit shine on everything we're doing.” http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?action=post;topic=11531.350;last_msg=728104
  22. Duck yeah!!! Cleveland beer garden from late 1800s is being brought back to life as Forest City Brewery By STAN BULLARD October 26, 2014 4:30 AM Two types of equity — old-fashioned sweat equity familiar to the West Side and new-breed crowdfunding that uses an Internet platform to find investors — are going into a plan to resurrect a one-time beer garden as part of a brewery in Cleveland's Duck Island. Originally, the partners planning to open the Forest City Brewery and beer-tasting pub wanted a different site, but Sammy Catania, a staffer at the Tremont West Development Corp. nonprofit, showed them a subdued gray commercial building on the southeast corner of Columbus Road and Freeman Avenue. In 1915, the timber frame warehouse had gone in atop a site that housed the Silberberg Bros. Beer Garden from 1880 to 1900. Jay Demagall, a partner in the Forest City Brewery venture, said the group was sold when it found that part of the beer garden — now a grassy yard — still exists. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20141026/SUB1/310269966/cleveland-beer-garden-from-late-1800s-is-being-brought-back-to-life
