A little blurb from the Case newspaper on the upcoming Natural History Museum renovations: History in the making Timmy Kuo/Observer October 9, 2014 You might be seeing a lot more natural history in the future. Announced in December 2012, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History declared plans to expand and renovate the pre-existing building. Glenda Bogar, associate director of communications said that the new project is still in the planning and fundraising stage; in March of this year they hired a project design team, including a team of architects. This team will be undergoing a series of intense workshops to plan with the space they have, and space where they can expand. Also under consideration are collections currently in storage and ways of incorporating those, although the collections are unfortunately not shared with the public yet. The goal for the project is to be completed in 2020, when the museum will be a hundred years old. Stay tuned, as the museum will be releasing the master design plan in December of this year. http://observer.case.edu/natural-history-museum-undergoes-renovation/#sthash.muWiNu4u.dpuf

Cleveland's new skate park to open in November CLEVELAND - Cleveland’s new skate park, The Crooked River Skate Park, will open next month. Cleveland Councilman Joe Cimperman said the goal is to have a ribbon cutting and party on Nov. 15. Cleveland has not had a skate park since the park behind the Rock Hall was removed in 2010. That park was gift from the Gravity Games. Grindline Skateparks of Seattle designed the new park, which is at Rivergate Park on the banks of the Cuyahoga River near Columbus Road. http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/clevelands-new-skate-park-to-open-in-november

From Fodor's: 5 Reasons to Visit Cleveland Now Posted by Kristan Schiller on October 09, 2014 at 12:00:00 PM EDT | Post a Comment Unlike Chicago, its Rust Belt brother to the West, Cleveland and its charms require an appetite for discovery. Many are familiar with "Iron Chef" Michael Symon, basketball megastar LeBron James, and the city’s I.M. Pei–designed Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, but for most, Cleveland remains a mere blip on the tourist trail from New York to Chicago. And yet, this Midwestern hub on the shores of Lake Erie, where John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in 1870 and where the Cleveland Orchestra has produced critically-acclaimed music for nearly a century, is experiencing a cultural and culinary renaissance that calls for travelers to sit up and take notice. Here are five great reasons to visit Cleveland now. http://www.fodors.com/news/5-reasons-to-visit-cleveland-now-10893.html

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
At Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center dedication, namesake commits $5 million more to CWRU The man who had to be persuaded to come to a cross country practice more than 50 years ago returned to campus Thursday to celebrate the opening of a new athletic facility that bears his name. Ultimately a four-year varsity letter winner in both cross country and track, James C. Wyant (CIT ’65) made a $4 million lead donation for a two-story, 24,000-square-foot building on the northeast corner of the Village of 115. That commitment catalyzed alumni, athletes and friends to contribute the remaining dollars to complete the $8 million project. On Thursday, the university community gathered to honor those contributors and watch Wyant and President Barbara R. Snyder perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting. But, it turned out, Wyant had more that he wanted those in attendance to cheer—specifically a new $2 million commitment to an addition to the Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center and a $3 million pledge to the Case School of Engineering’s innovation hub, think[ box ]. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/at-wyant-athletic-and-wellness-center-dedication-namesake-commits-5-million-more-to-cwru/

LeBron James Returns to Cleveland — Israel's Champion Hoops Team a Side Show Maccabi Tel Aviv Take on Old Coach and Superstar By Hillel Kuttler Published Wednesday, October 1, 2014 “Going to Cleveland, playing against our old coach, LeBron, Kyrie – some of the best players in the world – I’m a huge competitor, so to be able to take part in a game like that, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m psyched,” said the heavily tattooed Landesberg, who sat out Maccabi’s title runs with an injury. “It’s going to be a packed house, I’m guessing, and I don’t think I’ve played in front of a crowd that big before. It’s going to be amazing.” --- The games in Cleveland and Brooklyn also bring a serious dimension — as fundraisers for organizations benefiting Israeli soldiers and children from Israel’s South affected by the rocket attacks from Gaza that prompted Operation Protective Edge this summer. Twelve Israeli soldiers wounded in the Gaza battles will be flown in for both games. In Brooklyn, the Nets will wear uniforms with their names spelled in Hebrew. http://m.forward.com/articles/206643/lebron-james-returns-to-cleveland-israels-champi/

Even the cool business people want to conference in Cleveland now By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on September 30, 2014 at 8:00 AM, updated October 01, 2014 at 3:47 PM The city is seeing a rush of business conferences and sales seminars, the kind of work-and-play gatherings that once landed elsewhere. It's what happens when your town is suddenly the object of positive news and widespread intrigue. "We're getting more and more calls from people, from other cities, from other chambers interested in coming to Cleveland to see what's going on," said Joe Roman, the president of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the regional chamber of commerce. Dave Johnson can put some numbers to the anecdotal evidence. He's the director of marketing and communications for the Cleveland Convention Center. Johnson talks in terms of "since the RNC" was announced. Since the July 9 announcement that the Republican National Convention was coming to Cleveland in 2016, the center has booked "a phenomenal" 62 events, Johnson said. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/09/even_the_cool_business_people.html

Seems like no one cared enough about this to post ;) Cleveland Clinic breaks ground on $276 million Cancer Institute, vowing it will be 'no ordinary building' By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer Follow on Twitter on September 29, 2014 at 6:01 PM, updated September 29, 2014 at 10:19 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dignitaries including U.S. Sen Rob Portman and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson lined up and used the customary shiny shovels to turn small scoops of earth to break ground symbolically for construction of the Cleveland Clinic's new, $276 million Cancer Institute. "This will be no ordinary building," Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove promised 200 listeners under a large white tent on the construction site at Carnegie Avenue and East 105th Street, where steel beams had already been stacked for use. Cosgrove said the 377,000-square-foot building, scheduled for completion in early 2017, "will be the ideal outpatient cancer treatment facility for our time." Commenting on the aesthetics of the building's design – led by the architecture firm of William Rawn Associates of Boston with the Cleveland office of Stantec, a multi-disciplinary design firm -- Cosgrove used the adjective "serene." http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2014/09/cleveland_clinic_breaks_ground.html
