  2. I'm definitely picturing a boutique-style hotel here. An aquatic/great lakes/nautical theme would work great here -- essentially using the disconnected-ness from the rest of Downtown as an advantage. Make it feel like a getaway.

  4. Domination over CWRU's arch rival: Beecher’s Career Night, Dominant Defense Propel Spartans to 30-0 Victory versus Carnegie Mellon in 29th Annual Academic Bowl CLEVELAND – Senior quarterback Billy Beecher (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) passed for a career-high 301 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as the Case Western Reserve University football team claimed the 29th Annual Academic Bowl by a score of 30-0 versus Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the 2014 season opener at DiSanto Field. The game, the first for each school as affiliate members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, counts toward both the PAC and University Athletic Association standings. The event was also tabbed as the 2014 PAC Kickoff Classic, and the Spartans donned their new Nike uniforms for the first time. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2014-15/releases/20140906ww174n
  5. Italy's Ravizza Packaging opening its U.S. headquarters in Akron By Janet H. Cho, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on September 05, 2014 at 11:15 AM, updated September 05, 2014 at 11:41 AM AKRON, Ohio -- Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic announced Friday morning that Ravizza Packaging, a third-generation, family owned manufacturing company based in Turin, Italy, will open its U.S. headquarters in Akron as part of plans to sell its patented Simplicita Bag Smart throughout America. Ravizza Packaging, founded in 1982 by Roberto Ravizza and his father, Franco, will open Ravizza Packaging USA Corp. with nine large pieces of machinery and three employees at Akron's Global Business Accelerator, according to the city. The Accelerator, at 526 S. Main St. in Akron, offers technical, administrative, marketing and professional services to technology-based startups. The company's annual revenues are $3.4 million, with the majority of its sales coming from Europe. It has also recently expanded into South America and New Zealand. "I chose Akron, Ohio, because of its proximity to our market, the overwhelming support from the City and the Accelerator, and the welcoming nature of the people I have met throughout Akron during my visits," Roberto Ravizza said in a written statement announcing the move. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/09/italys_ravizza_packaging_opening_its_us_headquarters_in_akron.html#incart_river

  7. Goodyear won't build plant in Akron, city says By John Harper, Northeast Ohio Media Group September 02, 2014 at 6:36 PM, updated September 02, 2014 at 6:41 PM AKRON, Ohio -- Goodyear will not build its new $500 million tire plant in its hometown. In a news release, Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic said Tuesday he received a letter from the tire company. "After discussing the matter with (Goodyear CEO) Rich Kramer, I am saddened but I realize that it is not economical to ship millions of tires from Ohio to Latin America, where Goodyear's growth in sales is occurring," Plusquellic said. "I appreciate Goodyear's willingness to consider our joint efforts to land this major investment, and further appreciate the continuing relationship." The company had said it was reviewing all options for the plant, which will manufacture the company's value-added line of products, but sources early on told Plain Dealer Publishing Co. that Akron was an unlikely location. Still, many industry experts, city officials and local economists said Akron's position as the technology center for rubber and polymer manufacturing may have given it an advantage over other locations in the Americas. http://www.cleveland.com/akron/index.ssf/2014/09/goodyear_wont_build_plant_in_a.html#incart_river

  12. Also opening this month (today) -- cross posted: Enter the Ninja: Cleveland bar-eatery Ninja City opens Thursday in University Circle By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer on August 12, 2014 at 3:23 PM, updated August 12, 2014 at 5:49 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It might be a stretch to say that Ronald McDonald inspired Bac Nguyen to open Ninja City. But not by much. The bar-eatery -- 11311 Euclid Ave., in the University Circle area -- opens to the public Thursday. It specializes in signature cocktails and Asian street food, a far cry from McDonald's. "You know, McDonald's is all we used to have in this area when I went to school here," says the 2004 Case Western Reserve University grad. "OK, there was also Mr. Hero ... but I could never understand why this area, which has so many students and people walking around, had so little options." Ten years later, the area is very different – thanks to new shops and eateries and the new Uptown development. The owner of Bac in Tremont decided to jump in with business partner Dylan Fallon to open Ninja City. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2014/08/enter_the_ninja_cleveland_bar-.html
  13. I really like the outlet shopping idea. Either way, it sounds like the new owners have a reputation of putting money into its properties.
  14. Ditto. As current Portland resident, I'll confirm Portland is a perfect urban planning stencil for a midsize city like Cleveland (TOD, urban farming, mixed-used development, bike lanes, policy, etc).
  15. 2014 should be a good year as well :)... And 2015, and 2016....

  20. But I guess what is left on the east side that continues to empty out at the same rate? We gotta be getting to a point the bleed is slower simply because there's no one left to bleed.
  21. And not just Downtown...the whole near westside is seeing a spike....Ohio City, Tremont, Duck Island, Hingetown, Detroit-Shoreway, Gordon Square, eta. We're talking a few thousand new housing units across all these areas. Plus University Circle continues to throw up 100's of new housing units. Slavic Village added a decent amount as well, correct? Should help post 2010 census numbers there.
  22. I offer the same for Portland, OR.
  23. Case Western football has a ton of returning talent, two night games, and a hyped-up freshman class. Worth checking out this year: 2014 Spartan Football Preview July 28, 2014 CLEVELAND – The 2014 Case Western Reserve University football season will feature a program-first opportunity as the Spartans will compete for an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Now an affiliate member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, CWRU will play an eight-game PAC schedule while maintaining its traditional slate of University Athletic Association opponents. "Our goal now is to win two conference championships," said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. "There won't be a major change in philosophy. We have the same core beliefs as a program, but now we have new opportunities to compete on a national level. This is something our program has looked forward to for quite some time, and we are glad that it is finally here." Debeljak's team will feature 30 letterwinners and 12 returning starters with eight on defense (all juniors) and four on offense. Case Western Reserve (5-4 in 2013) has seven consecutive winning seasons with a 59-14 overall record since the beginning of the 2007 campaign. During that span, the Spartans have won four UAA Championships with three straight undefeated regular seasons and NCAA Playoff berths from 2007-09. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2014-15/releases/2014072599llj7 Debeljak Announces Spartan Football Recruiting Class of 2014 May 5, 2014 CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University Head Coach Greg Debeljak has announced the Spartan football recruiting class of 2014. The 39 incoming players represent 14 different states from around the nation. "We are very excited to welcome the class of 2018 to our program," said Debeljak. "This is one of our largest and most diverse groups as our staff did a great job of bringing in young men from many different regions throughout the country. The 14 states represented are probably our largest number, and our group from within Ohio is very solid. Talent-wise, only our recruiting class in 2006 compares to this one." State Breakdown: Ohio - 13 Pennsylvania - 4 California - 4 Illinois - 3 North Carolina - 2 Virginia - 2 New York - 2 Massachusetts - 2 Florida - 1 New Hampshire - 1 Georgia - 1 Colorado - 1 Maryland - 1 New Jersey - 1 http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2014-15/releases/20140502wc2r5r

First cruise ship of the season arrives in Cleveland Shortly after lunch on Monday, the Grande Mariner's main deck filled with passengers with cameras and smart-phones at the ready to capture their first views of Cleveland's skyline and majestic bridges. 25. LOVE...from a Pittsburgh transplant. These articles just keep coming! 5 Reasons Why It’s Okay To Like Cleveland By Nicole Ranieri It was this morning that I drove into the city from my adorable, quaint little town called Lakewood on the west side. I was coming to my awesomely trendy new office building, the E&Y Tower, in the Flats East Bank of Cleveland. I work in advertising, so many of my coworkers are super artistic. A few were outside the office facing the opposing brick wall drawing Cleveland-y things in chalk. That was when it hit me. It’s OK to like Cleveland. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I guess it was imparted on me at a young age that a strong rivalry with Cleveland, Ohio and the Browns came with the territory of growing up where I did. But, when offered my first job right out of college in Cleveland, I said yes. Definitely, yes. http://thoughtcatalog.com/nicole-ranieri/2014/08/5-reasons-why-its-okay-to-like-cleveland/
