  3. Would Goodyear actually build its $500 million plant in Akron? By John Harper, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author on July 21, 2014 at 1:30 AM, updated July 21, 2014 at 5:15 PM AKRON, Ohio -- It has been decades since a brand new rubber or tire factory opened in the nation's once-esteemed rubber capital. Upon announcement of a proposed $500 Goodyear tire plant a community in South Carolina is already claiming dibs and is preparing tax incentives. That is not discouraging Akron city officials from opening their doors and arms to Goodyear. What's more, local economists believe Akron may have its best shot in decades at seeing a new tire plant open for business in Northeast Ohio. "That Akron is in the mix demonstrates to me a tremendous change in attitude," said Michael Jalbert, a labor attorney who has represented local labor groups."It is going to send a signal not just to Ohio or the rubber industry, but to a lot of major manufacturers who have departed to ports unknown." http://www.cleveland.com/akron/index.ssf/2014/07/would_goodyear_build_akron.html

Mike Miller recruiting Ray Allen to Cleveland By The Sports Xchange 48 minutes ago Ray Allen continues to contemplate his future and possible retirement as his 39th birthday approaches, but recently signed Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mike Miller is trying to tempt a fellow 3-point ace with a LeBron James reunion. "We got James Jones, now we're moving Miami to northeast Ohio," Miller said. "With LeBron James, you are going to win 55 to 60 games regardless. Now it's about what you do in the playoffs. For us, even with the young talent that they have there, you've gotta bring guys that have been there before, even if they are not giving you heavy minutes," Miller told ESPN Radio on Thursday. "Because those are the guys that understand the preparation, the adjustments, things like that can really bring those guys along. And then you build it from there." http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mike-miller-recruiting-ray-allen-203444690--nba.html
  7. Volumes Up for Cleveland’s New Liner Service Posted by Eric Haun Thursday, July 17, 2014, 4:17 PM Cleveland Europe Express shows major increase in volume, while established maritime and development finance revenues also up substantially The Port of Cleveland announced that its Cleveland-Europe Express, the dedicated monthly liner service that launched in April, had its best month to date in June. This start-up service doubled its revenues in June when compared to either April or May. The Port’s traditional maritime and development finance services are also seeing increased demand and are forecasted to have a record year. Vessel calls at the Port of Cleveland are up 75% through June, another indicator that the Greater Cleveland economy continues to grow. Additionally, revenues from the Port’s financing business are forecasted to be at an all-time high. The Port has recently supported critical regional projects, such as The 9, the Flats East Bank Development and the world headquarters of American Greetings, helping to further fuel the momentum in the regional economy. http://www.marinelink.com/news/clevelands-volumes-liner373185.aspx
  8. With all the attention on landing the RNC (and Lebron), I'm noticing comparatively little hype for GG9. I truly hope Cleveland is ready to host this international event. No offense to those involved (especially posters on here), as I really don't know anything about the inner workings. My thoughts are mostly on mind-share for the Cleveland community itself. Do you think Cleveland, as a whole, is ready for its gay spotlight and showcase?

  12. Crumbling Cleveland building has ties to rock and roll Kristin Anderson, WKYC 7:24 p.m. EDT July 14, 2014 CLEVELAND -- An historic building downtown is sparking a fight over whether to tear it down and lose a piece of Cleveland history. The former Herald Building is connected to the place where music industry icon Alan Freed coined the phrase "Rock and Roll." Downtown Cleveland Alliance says the owners of the Herald Building want to tear it down and possibly put up a billboard, or retail store or parking lot. WKYC tried contacting L&R, but has yet to hear back from them. The city ordered L&R to repair the building to make it safe, but they say L&R is not in compliance with the court. http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cuyahoga-county/2014/07/14/historic-building-has-ties-to-rock-and-roll/12650425/

  15. From the NY Times: An Energized Cleveland Takes a Bipartisan Tack to Wooing Conventions By TRIP GABRIELJULY 3, 2014 CLEVELAND — Attention, Internet wits: Cleveland has heard all your jokes — about “the mistake by the lake,” about its sports teams failing year after year, about its river so polluted that it once caught fire — and it wants you to know that is tired, worn-out stuff. Downtown Cleveland is busily rehabilitating. The restaurant scene is percolating, and young newcomers are giving faded neighborhoods west of downtown, where brew pubs and bistros are opening, a patina of hipness. And now, Cleveland is a candidate for both the Republicans’ and Democrats’ 2016 conventions — the only city to make both lists. Landing either one, with its tens of thousands of visitors and prime-time TV coverage, would immerse the city in a bath of national attention that is making boosters giddy. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/04/us/cleveland-ohio-2016-election-republican-democratic-conventions.html?_r=0
  16. New Cuyahoga County headquarters scheduled to open July 15 By Andrew J. Tobias, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on July 03, 2014 at 5:48 PM, updated July 03, 2014 at 6:18 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County's new administrators headquarters at the site of the former Ameritrust complex will open for business later this month. The county inspector general's office and the county public works departments will be the first offices to move into the new eight-story building, located at East Ninth Street and Prospect Avenue. Both county agencies are scheduled to be up and running in their new digs on July 15, according to a Thursday press release from County Executive Ed FitzGerald. Another 11 county offices will move in phases -- the entire relocation is expected to be complete by August 11. The Ameritrust complex, which is now known as "The 9," will also include a new Heinen's grocery store in the iconic rotunda, as well as a mixed-use building at 1010 Euclid Ave. The tower will be renovated into a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel and luxury apartments. http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2014/07/new_cuyahoga_county_headquarters_scheduled_to_open_july_15.html#incart_river_default
  17. Fingers crossed for Police Station. IMO this could help leverage new development around the building. New Campus International School will be on Cleveland State University campus or in renovated police station, parties agree By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer July 03, 2014 at 3:21 PM, updated July 03, 2014 at 3:22 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - A new Campus International School for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be in a new building on the Cleveland State University campus or in a former Cleveland police station, parents, CSU President Ronald Berkman and Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon agreed on Thursday. However, funding is contingent on voters in November approving a $200 million extension of the city's 13-year school construction plan. The parties met at school headquarters to reach a consensus on the future of the school, which has outgrown two locations. The international school, which Berkman helped conceive, formed in 2010 and currently houses students through fifth grade on the CSU campus. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/07/new_campus_international_schoo.html

  19. I'm digging the last bit of the article: http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-1/Cleveland-the-city-and-the-Browns-have-become-a-top-NFL-destination/648a3fac-374a-4cc4-aa2b-186b78b79421 5) Cleveland has become a better place to live Take it from me, someone who just moved from Washington D.C. to the revitalized downtown. A friend who visited me called Cleveland “charming,” and it's easy to agree. According to WKYC, the city’s population skyrocketed in 2013. Cleveland’s restaurant scene is one of the most underrated in the country. Places like Little Italy and the West Side Market are staples of why people keep moving back into the city. Why do movies like Captain America keep coming back to film in Cleveland? Because the skyline and uniqueness of the city truly do stand out. Don’t count out the new renovations at FirstEnergy stadium either, which will make the game day experience better for both fans and players. The city itself can now actually be boasted as a pitch to potential Cleveland Browns free agents. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And piggy-backing off this positive vibe: http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cuyahoga-county/2014/07/02/cleveland--new-downtown-energy-greets-concertgoers/12049943/ http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/07/cleveland_orchestra_celebrates.html
