Cleveland Gladiators unbeaten streak at six after beating Pittsburgh Power, 55-28 MIKE PETICCA Special to The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Gladiators' locker room was loud and happy after Cleveland's Arena Football League game on Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena. It was the type of celebration that might be expected of a team that had become 6-0 with a dominating performance by its offense, defense and special teams, an effort good enough for a 55-28 Cleveland rout of the Pittsburgh Power before 11,087 fans. http://www.cleveland.com/gladiators/index.ssf/2014/04/cleveland_gladiators_unbeaten.html
  2. Hmm...I've always differentiated the two threads as: Cleveland: Film Industry -- Cleveland involvement in the business side of the industry -- being a filming location, soundstages, professional work, etc Cleveland: The City in Movies & TV -- Cleveland/Cleveland people being featured in movies, tv, radio, etc

"It's an amazing opportunity for us," said Scott Peacock, director of communications for Positively Cleveland, which has been organizing tours and behind-the-scenes get-togethers for the journalists at some of the city's top spots. 7. Shoreway Lofts being built in former Globe Machine & Stamping Co. building W.76th St. historic building set to open in July CLEVELAND - A four-floor building that began its life as the Globe Machine & Stamping Company was purchased in the late 1980s by the family who own and operate the Pat Catan's stores in three states. Owner Nick Catanzarite says his family business will soon become landlords to spectacular lofts with views of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie, following a decision to switch the building's purpose from storage to one and two bedroom lofts. The view from almost every angle out of new windows being installed should be an instant leasing bonus for the apartments. "We're obviously very excited about the project because of the views, the spectacular views of downtown, great views of the lake," said Nick Catanzarite. "The windows surrounding the building provide views like this one bedroom apartment's. Imagine waking up to this view of downtown Cleveland each morning. We've had tremendous excitement so far and that's why we're over fifty percent leased already." http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/oh-cuyahoga/shoreway-lofts-being-built-in-former-globe-machine-stamping-co-building
  8. The miracle of Cleveland's Playhouse Square: How a performing arts complex helped save downtown and launch a national revival of historic theaters By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer on April 25, 2014 at 10:55 AM, updated April 25, 2014 at 12:20 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The completion of $16 million in signage and streetscape improvements at Playhouse Square, plus the May 2 ceremonial lighting of a giant outdoor chandelier, signal the latest stage in the nationally admired revival of the city's theater district. The late Ray Shepardson, who died on April 14 at age 70, changed the course of Cleveland history and helped launch a local historic preservation movement in 1970 when he spearheaded the preservation of Playhouse Square's then-abandoned movie palaces and vaudeville houses. With its 11 stages, and more than 10,000 seats, Playhouse Square now ranks as the second-largest unified arts complex in the United States, after Lincoln Center in New York. Over the decades, Playhouse Square’s success helped anchor the revitalization of the rest of downtown Cleveland. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2014/04/the_miracle_of_clevelands_play.html

  11. Took a promotion, but hopefully within the next 2-3 years. Ironically enough, I almost bought a house in the Alberta Arts District...cool area. That neighborhood and Mississippi Ave remind me most of Cleveland. The city gives new perspectives and fresh ideas to bring home. Happy to see Urban Farmer coming from Portland to Cleveland -- I hope Cleveland enjoys it! I'll keep spreading the Cleveland hype out here about our food scene.
  12. Very neat article. I notice the writer lives in Portland, OR. Not sure how many of you know, but I've been living in Portland for the past year for work (and touting Cleveland all along the way of course...). Most Portlanders generally view Cleveland as an interesting city they'd like to or have visited...and often mention the growing national food scene. As much as we detest the obligatory opening intro paragraphs (although this one includes the humorous Gin Blossoms snub sounding like it's an equal problem compared to the others), it does give Cleveland a sort of underrated, chip-on-its-shoulder reputation nationally -- and I mean that in a good way.
  13. WHOA Cleveland Partners With Private College For New Public High School Monday, April 21, 2014 at 10:49 In today’s job market, applicants need to be higher skilled and better educated in order compete for secure jobs at decent pay. More schools systems are getting the message and offering students a chance to earn some college credit before leaving high school. Numerous so-called “early college” programs have cropped up across Ohio in the last decade, most in conjunction with a nearby public college or university. StateImpact’s Michelle Kanu reports the Cleveland school district is set to open another in the fall, but it’s partnership with higher education is a little out of the ordinary. Cleveland’s new Bard High School Early College will open in what used to be Brooklawn Elementary on Cleveland’s west side. Students will take both high school and college classes there. At the end of four years, they can walk away with up to 60 college credits—the equivalent of an associate’s degree—along with their diploma. http://www.ideastream.org/news/feature/cleveland-partners-with-private-college-for-new-public-high-school1
  14. Thanks Clueless! Did you happening to snap any pics of the Wyatt Field House across the street? It's at least 2 stories out of the ground.
  15. The anticipation builds :) Cleveland's ship has come in, but will exporters climb aboard? By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer ] April 18, 2014 at 7:00 AM, updated April 18, 2014 at 9:12 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio--When the Dutch ship Fortunagracht steams into Cleveland Harbor on Friday night or early Saturday, having sailed nearly 4,000 miles from Antwerp, Belgium, and threaded an icy Saint Lawrence Seaway, it will find a motley assortment of cargo waiting at the docks. A yellow school bus. Road-building equipment. Red steel containers resembling giant shoeboxes and stuffed with car parts, machine parts, chemicals, hydraulic pumps and hoses, nuts and bolts and fasteners. On Thursday morning, a front-end loader took a shipping container off a flatbed truck at the Port of Cleveland, adding it to a stack of cargo destined to cross the Atlantic on the Cleveland-Europe Express. The so-called liner service, which will bring seldom-seen container ships to the lakefront, offers far more than spectacle. Suddenly, a Great Lakes city is offering the options of an East Coast seaport: containerized shipping direct to foreign harbors. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/04/clevelands_international_ship.html
  16. I have mixed feelings. I definitely see the improvements, but it still doesn't have that "wow factor" to me. I would describe it as "nice," but it doesn't really increase my desire to visit or hang out there more...which, to me, is what this design needs to absolutely do. What kills this area is the lack of dynamic interactions of storefronts and attractions (just putting European-style tables and chairs doesn't quite work unfortunately...although we definitely need some more). Having a more visible Soldiers and Sailors Monument is an improvement, but it has always been there almost invisable to most Clevelanders and isn't quite a gamechanger (I do like the colorful lighting elements on the monument!). IMO this theme of more colorful spot-lighting needs to be hammered much more -- especially on the Federal Building, Society of Savings, 75 Public Square, etc. How about a temporary 8-story mural (with lighting of course) built along the parking lot side of the square to finally close it off than can be relocated later :). Or even better yet a huge electronic billboard/tv with news, Cleveland Sports, temperature, promotional videos constantly looping. Any sort of interactive aspect, the better, even if only on one section of the screen...like where people can post messages or images on the big screen via smartphone (filtered and sensored of course) Anything interesting we can put on the back of the building behind of the Old Stone Church? Rotating projection of various images, animations at nightime? That would sure catch my ADD attention span and cause me to stop and watch. Public Square designers may want to look to how colorful some growing Asian cities look at nighttime (I'm not saying we should have that much color, but to see the jaw-dropping power). Let's get the people of Ingenuity Fest, Cleveland Institute of Art, LeanDog, and LAND Studio all in the same room together. I'm guessing my ideas would at least double the price tag...but hey maybe it can be a Phase II for the aesthetics and interactiveness (since this current proposal seems for reformating and structural).
  17. I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but a little more information on the upcoming May 2 lighting ceremony: WORTH THE DAZZLE http://cbcmagazine.com/2014/03/19/in-the-green-4/ Befitting of a theater district, the event will feature pyrotechnics set to music, Cheplowitz says. A not-yet-announced national recording star will entertain. Cheplowitz says the event will go beyond merely creating a spectacle and commemorating how much the theaters have accomplished. It will also make a statement about environmental concerns. Each of the lights used in the chandelier and other structures will be LEDs, meaning they will use considerably less energy than more conventional lights. Each of the restaurants that will be serving food during the event are being asked to use sustainable/recyclable materials while also providing recycling bins.
  18. The Arcade would be perfect. Drawing national tourists inside the building.

  20. From the Euclid 115 building: Cleveland's Coquette Patisserie in University Circle open for macarons and Champagne Britt-Marie Culey, who is as cute as a pouf of macaron herself, owns the shop with her husband, Shane, and runs it with 11 employees. When they're not executing custom orders or baking for their weekly appearance at North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square, they keep their cases filled with macarons, tarts, and small, ornately designed cakes. They also sell coffee, tea, savory pastries, champagne and oysters. We stopped by to watch Culey rescue a batch of brioche with some hand-kneading the day after her mixer broke. We talked in her refreshing shop (rustic and sophisticated) and got a little sugar-buzz ourselves. DS: Who's been coming to the shop? BC: Right now, three different customers. We have students during the day. They come in, have some macarons, a pot of coffee, and sit and study. Around 4:30 p.m. the hospital employees are getting off work. They come for happy hour or to get pastries to go. At 9, we get the after-show crowd. In all, we're open 10 a.m. to midnight most days. I take the early shift and my husband Shane works the later shift. We also care for our 10-month-old son. (Pause.) Yes, our timing. You can plan as much as you want, but sometimes life just does what it wants. http://www.cleveland.com/cooking/index.ssf/2014/04/clevelands_coquette_patisserie.html

  24. If anyone would like to take over editing the master list front page, I'm officially retired as of last year. I made a long sentimental post respectfully submitting my resignation, but it was wiped clean in the last great urbanohio crash. I have old stencils from past years if anyone would like to take over. It'd be appreciated!
