  1. ^ On that note: Gay Games to make a statement about diversity in TV commercial during Winter Olympics opening ceremony (video): Michael K. McIntyre's Tipoff The 2014 Gay Games, coming to Cleveland and Akron in August, is set to make a statement locally about diversity during the NBC broadcast of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday on WKYC Channel 3. "These are great times we live in. Exciting, evolving, extraordinary times. While the rest of the world tries to decide what its legacy will be, here in Northeast Ohio, we have a running start," says the narrator of a minute-long commercial to air on Channel 3. "This year, the most inclusive sporting event in the world will take place in Cleveland and Akron." http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2014/02/clevelands_gay_games_will_make.html
  2. Thanks to Sochi, and Putin's Anti-gay policies/laws, I'm betting Cleveland will gain more US and international attention than if the Winter Olympics were held anywhere else for GG9.

  5. More buzz on the popular Portland spot being transplanted into Downtown Cleveland -- Urban Farmer. Downtown Farming: Portland's Beloved Urban Farmer Will Open a Cleveland Spot, and For That We Are Salivating by Douglas Trattner Last year, Travel & Leisure magazine named Portland's Urban Farmer restaurant one of the "Best Steakhouses in the U.S." Not long before that, The Guardian included the restaurant in its listing of "Top 10 Places to Eat in Portland." Why should we care? Because in a few months, Urban Farmer will open a second location, in downtown Cleveland http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/downtown-farming-portlands-beloved-urban-farmer-will-open-a-cleveland-spot-and-for-that-we-are-salivating/Content?oid=3777818 Thoughts on if such a high end can be sustained? 6. Very nice! Thanks for letting us live a day in the shoes of KJP! :)
  7. Portland is very socially sensitive...So they don't want the renters to be priced out. Plus there's a few Trader Joes already in the city limits. Plus from the article: "Critics said the development would displace residents and perpetuate income inequality in one of the most rapidly gentrifying ZIP codes in the nation."
  8. As many great lakes cities beg Trader Joes to open in their city neighborhoods, local Portland groups have successfully held off Trader Joes for trying to open a NE Portland neighborhood store...citing the need to slow down gentrification. Trader Joe's backs out of controversial NE Portland store Posted on February 3, 2014 at 1:35 PM PORTLAND – Trader Joe’s backed out of a development plan for Northeast Portland Monday after the project was widely criticized as gentrification. Monday, Trader Joe's announced to the City of Portland and California-based developer Majestic Reality Co. that it would no longer be a part of $8 million retail development planned for a long-dormant corner at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Alberta Street. The city agreed to sell the land, worth between $2.5 and 2.7 million, for only $500,000. The city said the discounted price was needed to get the development in the area jump-started. Trader Joe's was to be the anchor tenant. The plan would have included two buildings, four to six retail stalls and 100 parking spaces. The Portland African American Leadership Forum and a handful of locally owned grocers criticized the deal as a taxpayer giveaway. PAALF said the development would also exacerbate gentrification. Inner North/Northeast Portland was once a black majority neighborhood. But over the last decade African Americans have found themselves in a minority in the area as waves of new residents and investments has poured into the area. http://www.kgw.com/news/Trader-Joes-back-out-of-controversial-Portland-development-243389941.html From the AP: Trader Joe's Drops Black-Neighborhood Store Plan PORTLAND, Ore. February 3, 2014 The Trader Joe's grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the heart of the city's historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area. The grocer, whose stores are found in urban neighborhoods across the nation, said Monday it wouldn't press its plan, given community resistance, The Oregonian ( http://bit.ly/1n7Jyqb ) reported. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/trader-joes-drops-plan-oregon-store-22350878

  11. In other regional news: Made in Cleveland again: Manufacturing makes a comeback in Northeast Ohio By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on February 02, 2014 at 8:00 AM, updated February 02, 2014 at 9:51 AM High-tech and healthcare companies are key engines in the new economy, but so too are venerable manufacturers with a new spring in their step, Northeast Ohio is finding. Factory work, with a dash of innovation, has re-emerged as a strong player in the region's economic mix, according to a study being released today. The 18-county region added manufacturing jobs for the first time in a decade in recent years, the study reveals, and they appear to be good paying jobs with a future. Between 2010 and 2012, researchers found, manufacturing accounted for the largest share of new jobs and did more than any other sector to drive the region out of the Great Recession. The study by the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University adds facts to anecdotal evidence of factories thrumming with new production lines in cities and suburbs. But it also reveals a Darwinian-like transition. A hearty band of manufacturers -- many of them small and mid-sized shops -- survived the trials of the early 2000s to emerge smarter, slimmer and stronger. Exports are up. So is nostalgia. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/02/greater_clevealand_manufacture.html
  12. All I can visualize are the United executives laughing as I'm reading this thing... Kind of taints the enjoyment of the read.
  13. Think of the Global companies who mandate United as part of their travel policy; Parker Hannifin Eaton Sherwin Williams Key Bank Progressive Cleveland Clinic?? I'm curious the odds of these switching the corporate policy/mandate of who to fly? I work for one of the companies listed, and I'll no longer be flying United by default.
  14. I had the same thought about Nela Park. I'm concerned this will be more of a detriment. I mean is it possible to leverage the clustering of the industry overall... spinoff business? Collaboration? Healthy competition? Cleveland is already a hub for flexible electronics for example.
  15. Is it really 56 pages as the news article states?
  16. The Portland one serves breakfast. This may be the best breakfast in Downtown by default :) http://urbanfarmerportland.com/portland-steakhouse-menus/?no_redirect=true
  17. Sounds like Cleveland may be losing the fight against Pittsburgh for this large manufacturing potential gain: http://www.post-gazette.com/local/2014/01/13/Local-firm-reviewing-possible-U-S-partnership-with-Slovenian-LED-firm/stories/201401130137 http://www.popcitymedia.com/devnews/grahlighting012214.aspx But it looks like there was in depth discussion in Cleveland this November: http://www.izvoznookno.si/Dokumenti/S-%20SABA%20Agenda.pdf
  18. Hey happy to do this math! btw Since this thread is "& vicinity"... can you guys help with an outline of all the new residential projects from let's say E. 55 and W. 70...basically the city/metro core? I've lost track of the all the new residential going into Tremont, Ohio City, Duck Island, and Gordon Square...etc. I, too, am curious if this spike in new unit creation in the city core will finally help pave the way for population stability.
  19. Cross posted from the "I love Cleveland thread:" HUGE feature on the city for all those global flyers of United...thoughts? 22. Besides systemically reclaiming the city block-by-block (ideally through CDC's), the "waving a magic wand" solution is fixing the school. By fix, I mean giving the ability of a new relocating family the choice to send their kids to a Cleveland public school and not immediately have to look to a suburb. The return of middle class families would be the turning point of population gain.
  23. A walk down Euclid, a step into Paris Jessica Yang, Staff Reporter January 23, 2014 Filed under Arts & Entertainment, Food, Top Stories “Bringing a little piece of Paris to Northeast Ohio” reads Coquette Patisserie, a new bakery that opened on Jan. 17 at 11607 Euclid Avenue, near Constantino’s and across from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Indeed, Coquette Patisserie does capture a slice of Paris, from its décor to its picture-perfect (Instagram-perfect, too) pastries. Britt-Marie Culey, the other co-owner, graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and did stints in France as well as New York before coming to Cleveland in 2008 with her husband, Shane. What started as a wholesale and catering business burgeoned into something bigger as they started having people ask about a brick-and-mortar store. They soon realized that they needed a shop and finally settled in University Circle, which in their eyes has their target clientele as well as a convenient location with easy access to public transportation. - See more at: http://observer.case.edu/a-walk-down-euclid-a-step-into-paris/#sthash.F4b0w8xm.dpuf
