  3. Is there a Larchmere thread?? Larchmere historic business district application in the works Thomas Jewell, Sun News By Thomas Jewell, Sun News on December 02, 2013 at 9:30 PM, updated December 03, 2013 at 9:11 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Upon further review, an application for historic district status will cater more to the longstanding business sense of Larchmere Boulevard. Most of the groundwork was done several years ago by Heather Fisher, then a graduate student going for her Master's degree in Historic Preservation at Ursuline College. "It started out as my thesis project and it became a viable historic district proposal from there," said Fisher, who submitted a preliminary application to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office in January 2012. But the project was shelved until earlier this year after Fisher was offered a full-time job elsewhere. Then Marie Rose Andriadi, co-owner of Larchmere's Bon Vivant restaurant, took over as lead consultant. http://www.cleveland.com/shaker-heights/index.ssf/2013/12/larchmere_historic_business_di.html
  4. 'Waterloo Brew,' east side Cleveland micro brewery, in works for Slovenian Workmen's Home in Waterloo By Joe Crea, Northeast Ohio Media Group CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Alan Glazen's "Operation Light Switch" in Cleveland's Waterloo district takes another step forward, with the entrepreneur's announced plans to bring a craft brewery to the east side neighborhood. "Our working name is 'The Waterloo Brew,' " says Glazen, the outspoken force behind an ongoing project to reinvigorate the proud section of the Collinwood area. He adds that the name of the building where the new brewing operation will be housed will remain the Slovenian Workmen's Home. Glazen is developing his latest project with restaurateurs Randy Kelly and Linda Syrek, who are also husband and wife. Together they operate XYZ the Tavern, Ontario Street Cafe and two ABC The Tavern locations, all in Cleveland. In revisiting the building's facilities, which he and his partners took over late last year, Glazen realized that the space once occupied by bowling lanes -- stripped away years ago -- deserved further consideration for a new use. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2013/12/east_side_cleveland_brewery_in.html

  7. I'm confused. Scene says 4th, but when I click on the link, it's visitor approval rating dropped to 11th. http://www.gogobot.com/awards/top_destinations_rising_stars Are local negative people voting it down once they saw the travelers high reviews? ;)

  9. Who's owns the parking lot in the foreground? Perhaps this Playhouse Square Building could be saved if the dorms wrap more around the back. http://media.cleveland.com/business_impact/photo/1725-euclid-sw-aerial-2013-12-03jpg-db1118db5fd19448.jpg And ironically, an article on the importance of historic preservation by CSU: http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2013/12/integrating_the_legacy_of_the.html

  17. I am increasingly sick to my stomach the more I think about this demolition for the integrity and urban fabric of the neighborhood. I believe the "plaza" talk was about letting 100 year old, all-brick courtyard survive.
  18. Club Corbo/Golden Bowl is down. The all-brick courtyard is lost forever. Photo from a friend:

  25. Downtown Cleveland is "walker's paradise," researchers say Alison Grant, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on November 14, 2013 at 8:00 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Downtown Cleveland is a "walker's paradise," with some of the city's other neigbhorhoods also ranking as among the most walkable urban locales in the country. That's according to a new report from Walk Score, a popular Internet site for determining the most pedestrian-friendly cities and neighborhoods. Overall, Cleveland ranks as the 16th most walkable large city in the country, with a "walk score" of 57 out of a possible 100, according to a rating of 2,500 U.S. cities on their walkability, biking-friendliness and access to transit. Among Cleveland neighborhoods, downtown rates the highest, with a score of 87, meaning daily errands don't require a car. Other places conducive to walking, according to the survey, are Ohio City (78), Detroit Shoreway (72), University Circle (71) and Buckeye-Shaker (71). http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/11/downtown_cleveland_is_walkers.html
