Cleveland: University Circle: Uptown (UARD)
in the circle: is uptown development living up to expectations? Lee Chilcote | Thursday, November 14, 2013 For years -- decades even -- the intersection of Ford and Euclid was the cryogenically-frozen heart of University Circle, a dead zone that everyone said had tremendous potential as Cleveland’s version of Harvard Square, but was lifeless after 5 p.m. University Circle, one of the city’s great success stories, had a doughnut hole. The Uptown project, a $65 million development of new shops, restaurants, a bookstore, a grocery store and 200 market-rate apartments, aimed to change that by becoming a new center of gravity for Cleveland’s cultural district. A partnership between MRN Ltd., University Circle Inc. (UCI) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) started the project during the recession, using complex layers of financing to get it off the ground. The buildings are visually stunning. Even if you don’t like modern architecture, you have to admire Uptown’s sweeping curve, the gracious Toby Lewis plaza and cleverly-branded “Uptown Alley,” and the ways in which the architecture plays off the shiny new Museum of Contemporary Art. The buildings stretch right to the sidewalk, and their big windows add to the street life. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/uptowntoday111413.aspx

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
developer breaks ground on 20 new micro-apartments in university circle Thursday, November 14, 2013 WXZ Development recently broke ground on 20 new micro-apartments on E. 118th Street in University Circle, adding to the wave of new housing in the area. Developer Jim Wymer says demand remains strong for efficiently designed, higher-end rental units geared towards professionals and students. "We realized the true market that was untapped was an upscale rental product that was suited to the demographics of the Circle," says Wymer, who previously built and sold 12 townhomes at Circle 118. "There are people looking for nice, unique housing that feels like a for-sale product, but they want to rent." The newest units, located on land previously owned by RTA, are actually Phase II of 118 Flats, a project that already brought 10 new units to E. 118th and Euclid. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/flats118project111413.aspx

Some love from San Fran: Cleveland prepares for its gay close-up Published 10/31/2013 by Heather Cassell [email protected] For years Cleveland has been known among visitors as the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Next year, Cleveland will add another notable event to its history when it hosts Gay Games 9. I was instantly charmed by Cleveland. The Midwestern city is endearing and modern at the same time that it celebrates its history. I was delighted by the neighborhoods during a summer trip to the city on the edge of Lake Erie. The weather was perfect, warm with some humidity, but not uncomfortable as a breeze came off the water in the late afternoon into the evening, naturally cooling off the city. Much is in store for LGBTs and others who visit the city next summer. An estimated 11,000 athletes from 65 countries are expected to compete against each other in more than 35 sporting events during the games, which take place August 9-16 in Cleveland and nearby Akron. Another 20,000 visitors are expected as part of the festivities. http://www.cpanel.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=69225

Welcoming refugees is paying off for Cleveland Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 25, 2013 at 3:20 PM, updated October 25, 2013 at 3:47 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio-- When a series of flights brought him from Katmandu to Cleveland in the fall of 2008, Nar Pradhan was free of a refugee camp for the first time in 17 years. He wasted not a moment. Within weeks, the earnest 27 year old found work at an Indian restaurant and commenced the family enterprise. Later arriving brothers and sisters fanned out across a recession-weary city, stringing together part-time jobs and pooling meager savings. In early 2011, Nar and his siblings bought Flavors of India, the North Olmsted restaurant that had hired him as a dishwasher, and added Nepali flourishes to the menu. Recently, they opened a South Asian grocery on Cleveland's west side, continuing a striking ascent from poverty that is not uncommon for families like theirs. A new study reveals that refugees -- the world's most desperate immigrants -- tend to do well in Cleveland and often out-achieve their U.S.-born neighbors over time. Eye-opening revelations include the fact that refugees are more likely to hold a job than native-born residents and more likely to send their children to college. After two years in Cleveland, researchers found, only 8 percent of refugee households are still receiving public assistance, a level of self-sufficiency that beats national norms. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/10/welcoming_refugees_pays_off_fo.html

Not sure where to post this...but this is extremely sad and bizarre if true: Former Cleveland Museum of Art Director David Franklin Resigns After Affair, Suicide; Cell Phone of Victim Missing Posted by Vince Grzegorek on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 3:34 PM Three days ago, Cleveland Museum of Art director David Franklin abruptly resigned, effective immediately, from his post at the prestigious organization for personal reasons. Scene was the first to give a glance into those personal reasons last night: Franklin had an affair with a CMA staffer (whose name we will not use) and she committed suicide five months ago. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2013/10/23/former-cleveland-museum-of-art-director-david-franklin-resigns-after-affair-suicide-cell-phone-of-victim-missing

Cleveland: Downtown: Hilton Cleveland
And if you had to guess how tall based on the image you saw, i'm wondering if you might say it is just about as tall as the Breuer. ;) So if I'm understanding these subtle clues being dropped...this means, we're about to see a new highrise almost the same height as the Justice Center and Federal Building. This perspective shows the potential impact the best: http://www.downtowncleveland.com/media/87806/arial_city.jpg EDIT: Here's a list of Cleveland's tallest...perhaps the clue is either 28 stories or 390 ft: http://www.emporis.com/statistics/tallest-buildings-cleveland-oh-usa

Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
$5.5 million Waterloo Road beautification project leaves Beachland Ballroom, others digging out of a short-term hole in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood (video) Waterloo John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer on October 08, 2013 at 7:45 AM, updated October 08, 2013 at 1:56 PM Danny Green had his Waterloo Road house blown up in a mob hit in 1975. That's nothing compared to what Waterloo Road looks like these days. The northern half of the street is closed – dug up and reduced to a hole that is more than a foot lower than the southern half. The construction is part of a $5.5 million streetscape project that will narrow Waterloo Road and broaden sidewalks to add new greenery, lighting, benches and bike racks. Getting there, at least the last three weeks, has been a road paved with upheaval. “We know it’s going to be awesome when it’s all done,” says Beachland Ballroom co-owner Cindy Barber, who compares the projects to similar efforts in the Ohio City, Coventry and Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods. “But we’re down 20 percent in attendance for shows during the busiest time in the concert season." To help local businesses make it through disruptions resulting from the construction, Northeast Shores Development Corp. has landed a $1 million grant from the Kresge Foundation. The group promotes business activity in the neighborhood. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2013/10/waterloo_road_in_cleveland_col.html

Cleveland CSU Wolstein Center future
I'm all for building more dorms in the four corners and around the top. This would remove seats from top and make it perfect for mid-sized events year round. Can CSU host more high school playoff games as well...like OU does with theirs? BTW...Whats facilities actually make money (Browns Stadium??)
