Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
You'll get no argument from me that the Stadium creates a dead zone. But here you are again, switching your focus from Burke to the Stadium. That site has been a stadium since well before Burke was built! If you ask me, the stadium can be remedied through clever additions of restaurant and retail space attached to the outside. As far as the "wasteland," The Science Center, Rock Hall and E 9th pier are busy every weekend. The tall ships made it especially busy, but most of the summer the area is quite active.

The crowds of people and gridlocked traffic around the Rock Hall this weekend sure didn't seem like a wasteland. Neither were the hundreds of people enjoying their boats at Lakeside Yacht Club, or the other marinas and parks further to the east.

On this same note, I've long thought that we should put a greenway around Burke to allow public access to the entire lakefront for walking, bikes and park benches. I'm not sure the FAA or EPA would feel the same way, but worth a discussion.

The fact of the matter remains, if Burke was so valuable, developers would be lining up at City Hall (and possibly also lining pockets). All one needs to do is look at that Scranton Peninsula "Thunderturd" Development and realize that Cleveland still has a long way to go. In my SIM City Cleveland I'm investing in Burke for the future, when personal aviation takes hold and everyone living in the CBD will love the chance to walk to their Uber drones.

Pretty picture. Cleveland has an attractive CBD as well. Now how about some population data? https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-census-chicago-cook-county-population-decline-20190408-story.html

Is everything you say about Burke false? ? There are already 2 runways at Burke!

Chicago, Cook County and the surrounding metro counties have also been losing population since Daley bulldozed Meigs.

I heard a possibility of 100-110F on Friday and Saturday.

In 1950 Cleveland maxed out population at just under one million. We were the 7th largest city in the country. You know what we had in 1950? A downtown airport..... I'd love to have that kind of 1950's "suicide" in Cleveland again. The airport had nothing to do with its decline.

And some fly from BKL. With no security, free parking and the "ultimate" in convenience. And by the way--you can't fly direct to CVG from Hopkins. Unless you buy yourself a charter. If you ask me, this is something the City of Cleveland should be pushing--starting with Ultimate Air. Why not add more flights out of BKL that can make use of a connection at Lunken? I bet if I walked in and asked Mayor Jackson about Ultimate Air, he would say "Who?" ?

Like many of your statements about BKL, this is simply not true. I just dropped off my wife at the BKL-LUK flight this morning. There is a morning and evening flight, with passengers deplaning and boarding each way.

Passenger numbers should have actually dramatically increased thanks to Ultimate Air adding BKL to their schedule. I'm down there all the time and those jets are almost always full both arriving and departing.

How exactly would Concourse D be put to practical use for the FBOs based at Burke? Assuming that the city would break the lease with United and sign an agreement not to use it for other airlines, there is no hangar space, which is what the Burke businesses need.

Actually, from my reading of the Amazon RFP they were more concerned with direct international flights rather than the airport proximity. This would actually make Washington Dulles their airport of choice (it does have many Europe and Asian routes). As for Cleveland, none of our airports would fit this specification... ?

One red line is completely over water (runway 6L) One red line crosses the tips of a few piers (runway 6R). You could still build on the same frontage line with First Energy stadium, and have lush green space in front of them for public access. But the Port has been there for a century and is still operating there. As my mother used to say, "if a frog had wings, his ass wouldn't bump the ground...." ?

This is where I think the city of Cleveland fails miserably. We are a rustbelt city with continually shrinking population and declining economic power. We are trying to remake ourselves into a healthcare/tech hub while holding on to a shred of our manufacturing past. Our youth continue to leave for the coasts and sunbelt and their booming cities. Despite this, one thing we have that MOST of these other cities do not? A functional airport capable of handling mainline aircraft IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT! I'd love to see what the City of Cleveland does to pitch this to businesses, but my guess is nothing. Out at County Airport there are dozens of aviation related businesses on the field. At Burke, there is a couple--and the city maintains the old Aviation High School to store a police helicopter and other city equipment.

Where are you putting these high rises? In the lake on new landfill? Take a look at the runway centerlines for Burke. There isn't much land they are covering! Since First Energy Stadium is already very close to the centerline of 6R (mainly used for small general aviation planes), you could probably build high rises on that same line. But where? On the 3 Port of Cleveland docks there? Anything to the South of that probably wouldn't be subject to many height restrictions.

Here is a birds-eye view of the tall ships snapped by my son as I flew the approach to 6L at BKL today.

Definite restrictions due to the airport. Even the buildings in this rendering look like they may be too high.

There is already acres of paved lots in "The Pit" just to the south of the current "cruise ship terminal" (aka The Port of Cleveland). The more I think of this the less I see US truckers parking their rigs on a boat and sailing across. They'd rather burn the fuel and earn their $1.20 a mile or whatever they make. European truckers are very used to this, plus their very strict hours-of-service laws give them plenty of downtime to sit on ferries.

Must have been a great trip. How long did it take you?

I personally would love to see the return of intercity service as in Scandinavia. Overnight ferry from Cleveland to Toronto via the Welland. Wake up ready for business--with your car if needed!
