  1. I would rather have 6-story buildings on all of the downtown surface parking lots first. To this end, I hope the Beacon is a rousing success. Maybe those surface lots can become 6 story parking structures with ground level retail, with future towers planned on top of them.
  2. I have a funny feeling that in a couple of weeks your picture is going to be posted on the construction office bulletin board and underneath it is going to say "turn and run away fast when you see this guy". In a couple of weeks? I was detained and tasered upon entering the premises today.... Worth it for a hot scoop though What do you think you'll be arrested for first? Trespassing, or public urination? :-D
  3. The deal "may save" the Q renovations. As a part of the original deal, Gilbert agreed to bankroll anything above the $140 million budget due to delays, etc. He may not be so apt to agree to that now that the timeline has been delayed since June. My guess is the county and city will bend over backwards to get this done, so this will end up costing more than it would have. Thanks GCC.

Another mayoral debate today at Market Garden Brewery. Candidates in attendance were: Dyrone Smith Jeffrey Johnson Brandon Chrostowski Eric Brewer Tony Madalone Robert Kilo Bill Patmon Zack Reed https://www.theclecast.com/episode-93-mayoral-forum-at-market-garden/
  5. Of course not, but since they schedule them 4-5 years in advance, CLE would be out of the rotation until the next chance comes around. IMO we would also have a great shot at the DNC here in the next 1-2 election cycles as well.
  6. It would still be possible to do AND meet the All Star Game deadline--but as Gilbert has pointed out this would drive the costs up considerably. Since his deal included the Cavs covering any budget overruns, obviously he wanted no part of that.

Too soon? Navy destroyer collides with building in downtown Houston https://www.duffelblog.com/2017/08/navy-destroyer-collides-with-building-in-downtown-houston/
  8. If you're trying to do a project while maintaining three team schedules and trying to book outside events, all to meet an NBA All Star game deadline, well then yes the timeline is crucial.
  9. Absolutely not! But this deal was negotiated in good faith with Gilbert. He has learned that small forces of loudmouths can sink it. So how willing do you think he'll be the next time around to make the same offer?
  10. I agree, Cleveland should pay. I think a renovated Q will be great. Not that the Q is bad right now, and no one was really complaining last year when it held a major event. But it's nice to have new things, right? Invest in it, Cleveland. At the same time, I think the owner should do more. There are a lot of bad stadium deals around the country, and I think Cleveland needs to be smart about this one. With what Dan Gilbert has done in Detroit, he can certainly do more for one arena rehab. As we type on this forum now, Dan Gilbert has gone from paying for 1/2 of this out of his pocket, plus renovating a bunch of community centers with new basketball courts, to paying $0.00 and not doing a thing. IMO if the negotiations restart eventually, his deal is going to get worse because he will be in the drivers seat.
  11. Significantly more than this renovation. The renovation would've gotten us through 2030, at least. In order to be competitive, you need new facilities. Ask Cincinnati. I'm curious why you'd invoke Cincinnati, who appear to have the worst stadium deal in history? https://faculty.ucmo.edu/crooker/sportsEconomics/Stadiums_Costly_Legacy_Throws_Taxpayers_For_a_loss_7122011.pdf IMO these articles about NFL and MLB stadium economics hold some merit. An arena, on the other hand, can be used 365 days a year for a multitude of purposes. It's apples to oranges. So comparing Cleveland's Q to Cinci's US Bank Arena is quite valid.
  12. If I could like this x100000, I would. The fact remains that almost all of the people opposing this background have little to no experience in finance and economics. They're just going by the eye test and common sense. Common sense is great in many situations, but not in more nuanced matters. Common sense would tell us the earth is flat... Neighborhood development will never happen in any sustainable way without employment growth in the area. Employment growth won't be incentivized without some private-sector involvement. I'm honestly so happy for Warrensville, Shaker, Maple, parts of Cleveland etc who will benefit from the Amazon distribution center. Their neighborhoods will benefit from more people going to work and seeing a steady income. These community activists like to think that the "buckets of money" that would be spent at the Q are going to rain down on their neighborhoods. The problem is, by the time that same dollar that would have been spent on the Q gets to their neighborhoods, it's been so watered down by politicians and groups that it doesn't amount to much. So instead of 10 guys in your neighborhood having solid construction jobs for a year, you hire one assistant to an assistant director at a CDC making $15k a year. Nice work people!
  13. Now the populist politicians are going to have to make good on their promises to throw millions of dollars not spent on the Q into the neighborhoods. I expect to drive on a freshly paved street at any point in the city.

The Main Ave Bridge is beyond the end of it's safe life. I'd love to see it replaced with an iconic bridge. The Veterans Memorial and Lorain Carnegie are both iconic to Clevelanders, but a bold new bridge for the new Shoreway Blvd could become something more notable worldwide. Perhaps something like this in France (with a 35mph speedlimit and walk/bikeways on either side).
  15. Agreed--this kind of service on a game day will instantly cause dissent among the already dissenting suburban rider ranks. The kind that will cause them to never come back.

I've spent time in all. Highly recommend if you get the chance someday.
  17. I've seen lots of Tribe-game bound friends complaining on social media about the redline today. You're right--a few runs of the articulated longer buses would have certainly helped.
  18. I was there and joined in. It was super classy of Cleveland.

I watched it and didn't come away with much, other than I'm a little more intrigued in Kilo. I didn't know he was a Republican and he does seem focused on job creation and neighborhoods through attracting business here nationally. I'll definitely do a bit more homework on him. Maybe it's time for a GOP mayor again ala Voinovich.
  20. In my travels, Wegman's (Western NY, PA, NJ) is light years superior to Giant Eagle and most other chains. If you're ever near one, just stop in and check out the prepared foods cafe, complete with live entertainment on weekend nights. And NO self-checkouts. Still 100% human staffed old-school checkers and baggers who are super efficient.
  21. I shall dance on the ashes of every Giant Eagle...the worst grocery store in the nation.
  22. Not the Wyndham in PHS. It's super TIRED...though I've seen old furniture piling up on Huron. Maybe they are renovating?
  23. Years ago when just starting college I worked with a guy who used to to tend bar at a joint on that corner. I guess it was THE place to be in Cleveland for quite some time. He served Sinatra, Babe Ruth, etc at whatever bar it was. Such a huge shame this area was never saved.

They very same military who's Navy, in spite of modern radar, GPS and night vision, can't stop running into merchant vessels...
  25. At least one day a week it is due to an accident, etc....Clifton was backed up off the Shoreway this morning when I went by there.
