  1. No kidding...they don't build them like they used to. I would guess this structure won't be standing 80-90 years from now like the one across the street that was just renovated for Starbucks/Twist, etc

  3. The district would have been funded by an additional sales tax at all the restaurants at FEB, and apparently the mayor didn't want to raise taxes, so he vetoed it. The developers never got a clear answer from City Hall about it and were kind of dumbfounded Why couldn't all the businesses just band together and say, we're all going to add a 1% "fee" to our checks to pay for this?
  4. Sounds like my 108 year-old wooden house. I had monster utility bills, with high gas in the winter, high electricity in the summer. Adding exterior wall insulation took about 15% off the bills. New windows, the real surprise, took about 30% off. Yeah I have zero insulation. I've gotten a couple quotes--they were crazy expensive, and due to the construction of my house the first floor can't really be done without risking blowing out all the plaster/lathe walls (basically on furring strips attached to the brick). Are you Cleveland-based? Who did you use for insulation?

  6. Damn what's up with the utility bills in Cinci? I have a 2500 sq ft centry home in Cleveland and even with the air running every day I am usually in the low $200 range. Same goes for the dregs of winter--gas is usually around $200 in the worst month, and that's with the thermostat set to a comfortable 70.

  8. I think they want a more closed shipping network... but so many regular prescriptions are total narcotics that are way worse than weed. Wait, do regular prescription drug components get delivered by UPS and FedEx? I don't even know. I believe the highly controlled meds are delivered by dedicated special carriers. This totally proves that there is a bunch of money up for grabs. If not, they would take the easy route of just distributing via CVS and Walgreens.

  10. Agree 100% with both of these statements. Detroit Shoreway is booming and lots of people aren't using cars. Why not bring the building closer to the street and have a covered front seating area with a walk-up window? That BK site could become a great corner site for a mixed-use retail/apt building.   11. Are there any resources to get this information on the neighborhood level? Would be interesting to see data on "hot" neighborhoods like Detroit-Shoreway.
  12. This is probably a very accurate assumption--especially with that Ernst-Young tower there. I had a cousin who worked for them and she used to go on extended out-of-town trips for audits. Apparently they like to mix up the audits with outsiders to make extra sure nothing is missed.
  13. The Progressive field renovations were far less extensive, no? They basically took some seats out, put in "temporary" platforms in their place, and renovated some concession spaces (which the concessions company contributed to). The admissions tax may go to the general fund, but if the arena becomes outdated, and used less, those revenues will eventually dry up. So it's a catch 22 in some ways. I'd rather have the tax pay for the renovations, and keep the rest of the economy around the Q working as many days of the year as we can get.
  14. This is my understanding as well. So all these neighborhood groups and people on this very forum claiming it's coming from school taxes or the general funds and should be spent in neighborhoods are coming at this the wrong way. I also understand that Dan Gilbert has laid out a pretty hefty financial package supporting this as well, including upgrades to many community centers in the city as a bone to the councilpeople. Jerry Jones famously went to the city of Dallas with a plan to build the now AT&T stadium. Dallas big-city politicians refused the hotel bed tax to pay for it, so he worked a deal to build it in Arlington. It is now built, hosts every major event known to man, and the city of Arlington is expected to pay it off 10 years ahead of schedule in 2024. I wish we didn't live in a country where tax dollars go to pay for these things, but unfortunately we do. If Cleveland wants to maintain it's place in tour routing, major national events, political conventions, etc, we need to figure out a way to stay competitive. If this means extra taxes on the users of the arena, hotel users, etc, then so be it.

    ^^I agree. Any time you've had one of these "I'm gonna cross-over to your sport" kind of moves, the new guy gets crushed. I think Maywhether will tire Connor out pretty quickly, then rail him. Either way it's a good payday for both.

  19. I agree with you--they just don't need to be right on Detroit Ave with a view of the lake and downtown. If CSMD sold the property, or perhaps thought outside the box to do a multi-use facility via an outside developer, they would bring in more money for the students of the district.

    But the Houston-Dallas segment is definitely needed. I 45 is like a parking lot daily. Southwest has dozens of flights daily between the two cities, plus United and AA operating out of DFW. A high speed train or similar would be heavily used (which is why the Texas highway lobby and the airlines would fight it).

    Cleburger, I agree with your point here. I've always though that aircraft and trains shouldn't be competing forms of transportation but complimentary. More HSR to crowded corridors to get aircraft out of the sky over California and especially the NE, I'm totally down with that. Japan does a great job with this idea. That being said when you look at the project winners, the routes are designed in a way that make it look like they're building a national network to replace airlines. Houston-Cheyenne? In fact they're not even proposing Boston-DC! WTF? Good luck with trying to kill air travel, much easier said than done. Remember as most pilots will tell you, it's not crowded in the sky. Plenty of room for everyone. It's landing and taking off that becomes an issue! :) Maybe the future will see a combination of high capacity tubes and advanced aircraft with STOVL capabilities (eliminating the need for long runways). At this point it's all still futuristic speculation. Houston to Cheyenne makes zero sense, but Houston to Dallas is needed tomorrow.
