I think coal mining is down in our area because of competition with natural gas, which is more convenient. I should also caution that the article says that alternative energy is cheaper than coal in thirty countries, not here. I'm all for solar and wind, but so far, they just aren't competitive with coal. My energy bill says that my electricity comes mostly from coal, but I can have the option to pay more for alternatives if it makes me feel better. Not sure where you live, but here in Northern Ohio almost all the coal plants have been shut down. A few are using gas for re-transmission.

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
City-run venues are historically bad at attracting shows because they don't have the freedom to wheel-and-deal with promoters on rent, concessions sharing, rebates, and the like. If you factor the CITY OF CLEVELAND into this, well, just imagine that nothing happens quickly and outside the lines of the jobs of those in charge. Leaders like Frank Jackson will not help the cause either, unless you want to put a show on at a dirt track. :-P

I am surprised too. I bet 30K are actually working, and the other 30K are on welfare sitting back claiming their jobs went to Mexico.

Something like this would be great on the former Max Hayes site at 45th/Detroit. Too bad the CMSD and Mayor have no vision.....

Cleveland: Cudell / West Boulevard / Edgewater: Development and News
Clifton and Edgewater are both great, but Detroit/West Blvd should be their focus. The director has been there for 30+ years and hasn't changed her mindset. I think she's collecting nearly $100K/year to rehash and go through the motions.

Cleveland: Cudell / West Boulevard / Edgewater: Development and News
Cudell doesn't allocate any resources to Edgewater. Cudell is a bunch of well-meaning old ladies who collect their salaries (grant money) and react to things. They are not visionary by any definition. It certainly would help to infuse some new blood in the organization willing to think outside the box and push TOD and other modern initiatives.

As someone who travels for a living, often times to small markets where Taxis are rare, Uber is a godsend. One way or another this industry seems like it's going to be crooked--whether it's Uber driving prices down, extortion for Taxi medallions or rank and file Taxi drivers cheating their unaware customers.

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
This sounds insanely expensive to me. Depends. The cost could be kept down if most of the vertical structure is built on the city-owned land where the Amtrak station is, with lesser structures such as walkways or parking decks built over the tracks and/or Shoreway. And this brings in federal money to build the transportation center on the ground floor, with the justice center built above. The end result is that the foundation is paid for by non-local sources. Expensive yes. This kind of structure straddling an existing active rail line would be expensive. But if built on solid ground at 21st and Payne could excess funds be available for the Waterfront Line loop?

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
If they Mayor is concerned about terrorist attacks on Public Square, how would he ever support building our police and courts over tracks that could carry hazmat under them.
-
Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
Meanwhile the Mayor and his corporate cronies just spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to keep "undesirable" bus riders off Public Square, but we're going to put a Police HQ there? Police and courts deserve a place downtown and close to transit, but not necessarily on the square. In a perfect world I'd love to see the country divest of the entire complex in the warehouse district, and build a new courts/police complex around E 21st and Payne Ave, including a rehabbed Third District police building in the project. To complete the pipe dream, the Waterfront Line would be completed in a loop with a stop there allowing transfers from Public Square for court and police visits.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Replacements are the natural progression from Alex Chilton, I suppose! Oh, remember Bruce did mention getting hit by a battery from a "fan" in Cleveland haha oh, i love the box tops and of course big star -- so now i have to read the chilton book - thanks lol! of course he makes an appearance in trouble boys, too. bruce was hit near his eye by a firecracker at a new years eve show at richfield. it became a famous bootleg called, naturally, the firecracker incident. great boot - epic show! speaking of bootlegs, imo the very best cle rock boot is the famous led zeppelin destroyer, one of the best boots of their ratty 1977 tour and also from a richfield coliseum show. robert plant says, "i'm so glad to beee.... .... here." it's the funniest thing i have ever heard. totally inspired spinal tap. otherwise, they were on that night though, its a good one. Firecracker...not a battery! I'm halfway through the Chilton book. It's funny, the Box Tops outside of Alex were so expendable that the author really doesn't even get into who the heck they were. Speaking of Richfield, I recently had a really hard time remembering the bar where all the bands hung out after the show. Google was no help. Neither were my idiot friends who kept saying "Tavern of Richfield." NO IT WASN'T TAVERN OF RICHFIELD. It was Barney Googles! Right--at the old Holiday Inn on SR 21?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
This is the same Mayor Jackson that said they hadn't talked at all about a Cavs parade even the day before Game 7 because "we don't jinx." Guess he's just not the plan ahead type. And now he's implementing these half-assed "security" features to save face and cover the REAL reasons he was trying to keep buses off the square.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
They didn't just close Ontario, they tried to pretend Ontario never existed and there was never any use for it. But Ontario is still the road between the train station and two courthouses. That reality will always take precedence over a lawn in the middle of downtown. Go ahead, ignore logistics all you want. Logistics doesn't care. It's going to win anyway. You might think you've beaten it, but it will rip the axles off your buses and kill your precious grass. Very well said. You can call it a "park" and pretend that it will change peoples' behavior but it's still the same old Public Square to some and will continued to be used in that way. Very true--and it's always been a center of transportation. The best plan for the square should have been one that enhanced transport, and was adaptable to events on weekends. Every day it seems to get further away from both.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
A few things to take away from this one: 1. I wish they still made more manual shift cars. 2. Good job Cleveland police--interesting how quickly they hunted the kids down and locked them in the train. 3. If you're going to commit these crimes, don't be a complete IDIOT and do it where all the cops live. This probably had something to do with their response! Cleveland carjacking suspect captured because he can't drive stick shift CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An 18-year-old man accused of committing three armed carjackings in a 10-day span was arrested because he didn't know how to drive stick shift, according to court records. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/03/cleveland_carjacking_suspect_c.html

Governor John Kasich
I wasn't quite sure where to put this--mods please move if you know of a better thread (perhaps worthy of a new one). When Red Statehouses Overrule Blue City Halls It’s no secret that the gulf between the social values of cities and the state governments that control them has been widening a long time. Cities skew Democratic, while in 25 states Republicans control both houses and the governorship. But with a Republican stranglehold over the federal government as well, the battle over preemption laws is heating up. A new report by the National League of Cities tallies which states have passed laws to restrict cities’ autonomy, and looks at how cities might fight back. https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/when-red-statehouses-overrule-blue-city-halls-preemtive-laws

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I'm sure the ghosts of the Soldier and Sailors monument will soon be joined by the thousands of pedestrians and friends of Mayor Jackson killed by RTA buses and terrorist attacks....    The Haunted Tunnel In Cleveland That’s Not For The Faint Of Heart Cleveland is a city rich with history. It was founded in 1796, and some of its buildings and streets stretch back just as far. But there is more to Cleveland’s history than what you can see on the surface, and to take in the full extent of it, you have to be ready to handle a healthy dose of the paranormal. Beneath the streets of downtown Cleveland, a huge subterranean complex is haunted by a legacy of ghostly history. http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/ohio/cleveland/haunted-tunnel-cleveland/?utm_source=hao&utm_medium=hoapage&utm_campaign=oiys

Exactly, some of them think they are at the casino. The worst are the ones who insist on scratching the damn things right there. I've been known to make it clear what I think of them. Reason #3,243 why I avoid Speedway gas stations at all cost. There is always multiple guys picking their own numbers, scratching their own tickets, buying 3 slices of pizza and a corn dog for breakfast, washing it down with a 97oz Slushee, all while chatting up the obese cashier.....

What is stupid is the people who buy 50 or 100 tickets when the jackpot hits a certain point....thinking they have a better chance. Statistically their chances are about the same as buying a single ticket.
