I have had several interactions with Kerry while he was with OCI. Very well spoken, intelligent individual. He is also extremely proactive--doesn't seem afraid of angering a small sect of constituents for the common good. I'd like to see where he takes this.
  2. When I went to CSU, you could still smoke inside. Everywhere. No grassy areas were needed, so it was called Concrete State..... :)
  3. Whiskey & motorcyles, what, no guns? That would be a Wal Mart....
  4. Its like Crocker Park, without all the fiery explosions!
  5. I think the answer would be "all of the above." Also don't discount the importance of being a center of government, something Toronto holds in common with your examples of Denver and Minneapolis (St Paul). All those taxpayer funded jobs never hurts the local economy. I'd love to pull it from Columbus and see what happens.....
  6. Memorialize? Is this the beginning of the final chapter for United here?
  7. Pedestrian friendly? I disagree. You would have to cross Detroit and West Blvd, and with those generous curb cuts that is not that pleasant. I suppose you could walk down Detroit, past Cudell Rec, cross West Blvd, and then cross the widest section of Detroit, but then you have to walk through a parking lot/bus cul-de-sac. That's not a pleasant walk either. *Edited to add: Plus the lanes are super wide here and traffic speeds by. All easily fixable with some TOD minded planning.
  8. Sad but true. Spend it or lose it in government finance. And little room for variation to move funds to something more productive.
  9. Good idea....but there is no way anything gets done prior to the RNC. Unless of course there is a wealthy donor patron who wants to property (ala Wolstein), the city just doesn't have the enforcement mechanism to get this stuff done much at all, let alone in the next 60 days.
  10. Key really does pass the test of time after her first 25 years. Still a good looking building.
  11. The West side Red Line shutdown for this weekend was cancelled to allow resources to be devoted to supporting the restoration of East side service. Eastside to the Westside...no diggity! :)
  12. And what about this do our Ohio leaders not understand? Invest in education and infrastructure to keep up in the 21st century....
  13. It was an obvious design flaw that IM Pei never included a large-format performance space in a building dedicated to rock-n-roll. Even the current lobby performance area was an after-the-fact add on. I wonder what happened to the barge that used to be docked there for the old rib cookoff stage?
  14. I'm not opposed to Euclid Square becoming something new. But I'd also like to see a vibrant retail scene at Tower City once more. And I'd love to see a strip mall at W25/Ohio City plowed under and replaced with a mixed-use development. Ditto with all the vacant land surrounding current stops on our rail system. If we do that first, it will suddenly make expanding the system more feasible.
  15. Absolutely. They're well aware. But sometimes I think they feel like they're merely overseeing a once great city and transit system in hospice care. But in RTA's defense, if there were developers waiting in the wings for redeveloping existing station areas, let alone the Noble/E152nd area, as well as Euclid Square Mall, projects like the Red Line extension would be easier sell. Then again, I think Calabrese could organize and lead a transit-oriented development task force to undertake station-area and corridor-specific redevelopment master-planning. RTA could pledge its superior bonding capabilities (they offer a lower interest rate than the development-minded port authority does!) plus property acquisition and clean-up of environmentally troubled real estate near transit stops. In so doing, RTA could achieve their mission of improving access to jobs and services. If extending transit services to reach jobs is in their mission, then surely bringing jobs to existing transit routes should be, too. I feel like the key to expanding TOD in Cleveland is to start from the popular areas and work our way out. How are we going to renovate Euclid Square mall when the HUB of the system at Tower City is lacking retail and amenities? Let's start there, followed by 25th/Lorain, W65th and West Blvd. Get people interested, and maybe then they will put pressure on Joe, ODOT and our other leadership to make sure the existing rails keep running, and hopefully expand in the future.
  16. Uhm are you advocating getting rid of the valets at my gym? Valet parkers are people too man! With real bills and real problems! And besides, have you seen me trying to get in and out of my SUV? It's like a rock-climbing adventure! Especially while talking on the phone and cradling a 700 calorie Frappachino!
  17. For real. Why not just use the same design?

Cool Audi commercial is currently trending on Facebook. Filmed on the steepest public road, located in Pittsburgh. http://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/Best-of-the-Burgh-Blogs/The-412/March-2016/Burghs-Steepest-Street-Stars-in-New-Audi-Commercial/
  19. Will be good to see some lights on in that tower at night! I will echo another posters sentiments about some architectural lighting on top!

^^One question KJP. When did they build the Gardiner, QEW and 401 highways? Did those concur with our interstate growth? Despite the transit mecca we make Toronto out to be, it's also the worst of the other end of the spectrum as well. Lots of sprawl, and lots of concrete. There are sections where I'd rather drive at 5 pm on a Friday in LA than in Toronto.....

I was just having a similar conversation with a real estate agent/friend. He thinks Lakewood is blowing up due to the density, transit, restaurants and bars that 20 and 30 something singles are after, without some of the crime issues across the border in Cleveland. Not sure if Shaker is experiencing the same--my friend specializes in West Side properties.
  22. You're mixing up two different towers. Riverview is on 25th and adjacent to the Market District. Lakeview Tower is next to the Lakeview Estates--that one is just north of the Shoreway. Either way, I would not want to see Riverview go away for many reasons. The people who live there are part of the neighborhood. I'd prefer to keep those seniors there, and give them some fresh young neighbors in high rises immediately to the north!

I think it's unfair to compare the two cities directly. Toronto is their "Big Apple". A more reasonable comparison would be between Cleveland and another mid to small sized city. If you want to keep it in the Great Lakes, perhaps Hamilton ON? Of course their population is more than Cleveland, but it wasn't too far in the past that they were the same size....
  24. Were any of companies along the route specifically asked about their thougths on the project? I wonder what Lincoln Electric's position would be. Besides hundreds of people working at the terminus of the line, they are breaking ground on a large training facility / welding school there. A Red Line extension would benefit both. If a large employer were behind a project, a lot of political people would be more vocal in support. Of course, the flip side is true as well Having grown up on the east side, I have plenty high school friends who are second and third generation Lincoln Electric employees. These guys are not living in the city. They've all fled Euclid, Wickliffe and Richmond Heights long ago to Perry, Madison, Chesterland and other parts east. Every single one of them.
