Hopkins Airport custodial manager now in charge of runways Cleveland 19 News has discovered the man who was hired to clean Hopkins International Airport is now in charge of the runways with no airport experience on his resume. His name is Eric Turner and his title is deputy commissioner at Hopkins. Turner was hired in 2013 as the airport's maintenance manager in charge of custodial services. I'd be more worried about my French vendor network owning a property there. The mortgage paperwork is most likely in French, but probably can be translated as there are over 750K English speaking people in the Montreal metro.

Engineering analysis? I suppose that's for the re-use of some materials in the future development. But sheesh. It's taking this project so long that the Federal Building may actually be done and on to it's next re-cladding by the time it starts! :-P

Salt Lake City is a very conservative place, but is also an active, outdoorsy and walking populace. I'm sure it didn't come easy. The large student population at the university probably helps..... It will only happen if our citizens demand it. We are an active bunch on here (with KJP leading the way in the Cleveland press--thank you sir!). We need to spread it to all our fellow urban dwellers to keep up pressure on their representatives.

I believe branding is too important in America for that to work. Although it could be a quality casino if it has a "Generic Name" aka one without a Caesars endorsement etc. people will look at it as lower quality casino. They probably will say "it wasn't good enough to have a big name endorse it so why should I go?" True--and along with it, the frequent players rewards cards, etc.

Well that seems wasteful..... Suburban 'Merica! Better build something new before the locals thing the place is going downhill and move 20 miles further out....

My only trip to Toronto was an organized 2-3 day high school trip in 1994. The place was very dull from what I remember, seeming no bigger than Cincinnati. I didn't see a streetcar even once and we had no idea that it had a subway. We asked stupid questions and back-talked the people who narrated a charter bus tour of the city, the highlight of which was seeing an old man peeing against a tree in a park. Like a pack of wolves the whole bus let out an exaggerated uproar over the old man and one of the tour guides looked out into space, bewildered. I remember we had one male and female tour guide and we kept asking them when they were having kids, if they already had one, etc. You should probably go back. The tour guides have kids, their are still a few people peeing on trees, and about 500 more skyscrapers.

I would agree with you, if they were destroying historic architecture to build them. But there has been little of this, with much of the new construction happening on former industrial/brownspace. If you want historical in Toronto, there is still plenty of it to go around. Should Cleveland ever see an economic boom similar to the early 20th century, I would welcome half of these towers!

It will probably end up being replacing all the redundancies in Buffalo with Key employees in Cleveland (working double).... The stockholders will be pleased, however, when their shares rise by $.09 next quarter....

Agreed--that entire surrounding area is ripe for rehabs. I love those old homes along East Blvd.

I don't think we could keep the facility busy enough to justify it's presence on such a "valuable piece of property." Plus the film industry likes wide open floor plans--more suitable to the size/space of the IX Center, which is currently not used to it's full capacity.

So black kids will continue to go to jail for minor possession charges.... Why can't this state just ever get something right? I don't get it. What are you saying? Because of the $50? You do know that it won't be legal for "kids" to have marijuana at all, right? By kids I meant young black men, who are disproportionately arrested for drug possession charges. At the risk of spinning this further of topic, I don't think it's fair to compare Minneapolis to Cleveland. Minneapolis has seen far less racial segregation, in part because there wasn't as many blacks migrating there as there were in midwestern cities during the industrial booms. It also has more Fortune 500 companies, as well as the nations largest private company (Cargill). In addition, its economy is propped up by it's twin city St Paul with it's government jobs and major university. Cleveland needs to worry about amenities like roads and bikeways to appeal to a younger, more affluent population, but ultimately it needs jobs, jobs, jobs to get them to move here. That is something Minneapolis has always excelled at....

America (sigh). Who owns these houses? What are the owners going to do with them? There has to be away to give these properties to someone for $1, with a contract that says they have to renovate or build new for "x" number of them.

I feel bad for the Bills. Definitely one of the worst pass interference calls I've seen in recent times. But then again, so many other mistakes for them in that game--you can't blame just that ref.

I'm for legalization of small quantities of marijuana including medicinal and recreational uses. Most importantly, I'd like to see the draconian sentencing laws done away with that sends a far greater quantity of young black men to jail. I don't like the "monopoly" aspect of the growing. Should I vote for this and hope for something better down the road?

Interesting thread. IMO one of Cleveland's biggest issues is lack of code enforcement. Is it we have too few inspectors? Or are they like many other city departments: show up at 8 am, are allowed 3 hours of breaks and getting into the field, then lunch, then 2 hours or getting back to the office, resulting in 15 minutes of actual code enforcement per day? :-o

I think there would be more savings than you realize. Of course it's not going to mean that 36 suburbs shrunk to 4 means 9 times less service personnel needed. But it also would likely mean *some* reduction. If a city really only needs 1.1 of some worker, they will have to hire 2. Sometimes, a city will need to hire for a position where the person could easily handle double the population if the city were bigger, but they're not going to hire that person part time. When suburbs are so small, this is likely very common. The number of workers hired is always rounded up from the number of workers needed. These things can really add up over a larger number of small suburbs. The same goes for equipment (police and fire especially). The savings are usually realized in support staff. They would still need "x" number of cops per 1,000 people. But they would need less chiefs, sergeants, secretaries and support staff. In addition, the larger force can negotiate better rates with vendors for cars, uniforms, etc.
