I was actually approached by two metro parks employees while walking my dog the other morning who asked how I was doing and was I enjoying the park. These weren't guys in khaki's and golf shirts, they were a couple dudes with weedeaters and Metroparks Tshirts, just in the midst of their day cutting grass there. I thanked them profusely for their work! Thank god the State of Ohio is out of there. The park is becoming a major game-changer!
  2. That is exactly what i mean, so many people would pack the train to attend those events if there were more events that could be held there. This is especially true because of the trains close proximity to the stadium. I compare it to people catching the train to Tower city for the Q due to the convenience of the stadium being connected. This is a pipe dream though, and has been discussed in length so it's not important. This has been thoroughly discussed upthread, about the viability of a enclosed stadium as an additional venue. As evidence, I always look to Lucas Oil Field in Indy, a similar sized market, geography etc. Their stadium is connected directly to the convention center, so gets quite a bit of "spillover business," where they simply open the building to an event, but the stadium is not really being utilized. For example, see the Deanna Adkins/Eric Wollenhaupt Wedding Reception coming up on their calendar: http://www.lucasoilstadium.com/upcoming-events.aspx. I suppose we could have weddings and barmitzvah's in our stadium, but in actuality First Energy Stadium already hosts such events, in the dining spaces on the club level.
  3. I'm not following. So the 143 people who ride it every day can see a domed stadium?
  4. I'm assuming the taxpayer. Lots of open land near the "Opportunity Cooridor." Mayor Jackson should put together a "Public-Private" partnership, and build a huge, open-span warehouse building. Does Mayor Jackson do those kind of things?
  5. I don't think boats have been allowed to dock on the east side of the river for 20 years. Coast guard rules due to many "incidents" with freighters.... I remember back in '04-'05 or so taking our boat downtown and docking at Joe's Crab Shack. There were always other boats docked on that side as well. Yes there were. I remember docking at Hooters and Fagan's as well. At some point, in the later 1990's, I remember they banned all docking along the east bank due to prop wash from the freighters, and probably a few drunk sailors getting crushed to death between boats.

  7. Yep. Wake me when Pace submits a building permit application to the city. "Feasibility Study" is political code for "how much taxpayer money can be anted up..."

Second this. The entire album is great. Worth a listen (or 20). They are amazing live if you have the chance to check them out. Rabid fans. I love the drum riser surfing on the crowd!
  9. I love how low-skill employers keep trying to put their jobs in sprawling, unwalkable, transit-inaccessible areas and then complain about not being able to get people to apply for jobs. Sure, the job pays enough to afford a car -- if you already have a car before applying. I was guessing these jobs were in such a place. I bet on the east side they'd get plenty of applicants.
  10. My company has been hiring for call center and struggling to fill the open positions. They were trying for a class of 10 I believe a few months ago and were only able to get 4 qualified applicants. They're trying again for July. It seems pretty standard here in CLE...there are jobs available but nobody to take them. Where are these jobs located, and what is the pay range?
  11. Our county and local voter turnout is abysmal. Until urban dwellers decide that voting is more important than today's espisode of Jerry Springer, the downstate farm and freeway sect will continue to ignore our needs and relegate us to another century of flyover status....

The originally were the San Francisco Warriors and played in San Francisco, in the Cow Palace (actually in Daly City). I guess they changed the name after they started playing in different venues in the area.

It's got to be one of the oldest buildings in the NBA....totally old school
  14. [quote author=E Rocc link=topic=10856.msg757864#msg757864 date=1432810733 We've discussed in the sprawl thread what actually triggered it after World War II. Government promotion of it was only a small factor. While government spending has facilitated sprawl, in my view that was driven by the demand rather than vice versa, especially early on.[/color] I would agree with this statement. I remember talking bout this with my grandfather years ago about why he left Philadelphia. When he returned home from the war, thanks to the segregated policies of the armed forces many blacks turned to factory jobs in the post-depression economy. When the white soldiers got home, they found new demographics awaiting them, along with easy opportunity to move away with a booming economy.

Does ANYONE think Houston has a shot to pull off the miracle? I actually think they could....
  16. I had to stick up for Popeye's lol. Far and away the best chicken out there now, and growing out in the sprawlburbs. So are payday lenders and cash for gold shops.

Nice shots. Downtown LA is on fire these days--booming!

The fact that it just wasn't a good series dampens the excitement a bit for me. Most of the games just weren't that fun to watch. The Cavs also never felt challenged in this series. A sweep just isn't as exciting as a game 6 or 7 win. I'll take it though...the rest is going to be good. I heard tickets were relatively easy to come by yesterday--everyone is saving their money for the massive prices of the finals!
  19. In the last two decades municipalities have been buckling to demands of their pro sport franchises to build new stadiums. Atlanta is building a new domed football stadium and baseball stadium while the old ones are only around 20 years old. Its pretty ridiculous. As Jacobs field and The Q turned 20 last year I began to wonder when we'd start to hear talk about new stadiums. I guess here we are. I think if they do get the money for the renovations, massive exterior renovations such as giving the concrete structure a glass exterior, mechanical fixes, and essentially making the building larger (increasing the footprint) for $140 million isn't (that) terrible. The new Orlando magic arena, which is 18,000 seats costs $330 million. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges essentially, but what I'm saying is if they do go through with this I'd rather only have a $70 million dollar tab (50-50 split) than that huge $330-$400 million dollar tab. I will say though even though I still like the Q a lot, I do wish the Q had more glass and was more transparent there is too much concrete for my taste. The "new" Orlando Magic Building, the Amway Center, is already 5 years old (and construction started 7 years ago).
  20. Nice pics. How is Stonebridge? Have they settled all the construction issues and lawsuit?
  21. RTA is hiring bus drivers. Any U-O contributors want to take a stab at the process and report back? Might be entertaining? http://www.riderta.com/sites/default/files/pdf/hr/OperatorOpenHouseFlyer.pdf

Huh? I didn't think it was ever very close at all at the end. Not like those Chicago games close... Bazemore hit a lay-up to cut it to 4 with 2 minutes left, could've been three but they didn't call an AND 1 on smith thank goodness. When you are up 17, step on their throat and finish. THey did the same thing game 5 against Chicago. Not complaining, I love the wins any way you can get them...im very happy. But it will be something they talk about. You don't want to give other teams opportunities. Maybe it's because I was watching via internet on my computer this time. But I never had the sense of urgency like those Chicago games.

  24. [quote author=MyTwoSense link=topic=1722.msg757185#msg757185 date=1432178396 I still don't understand why we always look at the negative, FIRST. There are so many positives to a retail establishment like this, opening in downtown. This increases options for downtown residential shoppers, office workers and students. This could be the equivalent to Paragon near Union Square in NYC. Perhaps you should read my comments. I'm not being negative, only questioning if they are altering their current business model. Snowboards are not a high volume item, in Cleveland, Union Square, or even in Denver!
  25. I agree with all--I'm not downing them or the store at all. I shop at the Lakewood store all the time--great people and products. Just wishing them well in this endeavor!
