Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Sad. I remember in the days of my youth the grand building with the Detroiter restaurant on the opposite corner. Hopefully the 117th and Clifton development will become something to set as an example, which will spread to other corners in the area. Until I set foot in it I'll hold my breath however.

And the windows along Detroit don't exactly put eyes on the street. But it does protect the people inside like a nice little bunker... Yep, it's a nasty, insular building that "distrusts" the street. Sorry guys my sarcastic comment was meant to say "tear it down and build a pharmacy," which seems to be the pattern on these types of Cleveland streets. I agree with you both on the design of the current structure. I just don't trust Cleveland and Cudell Improvement to do anything meaningful on such an important corner....

Cleveland City Council
Bring on those body cameras. I believe I mentioned on another thread, but I feel some politicians like Jeff Johnson may come to regret pushing for them when they figure out 999 times out of 1000 cops were justified in their actions. You can bet also the footage will make some residents internet sensations.

Yes there's not a good CVS for at least 3 blocks. Or maybe it could be a Rite Aid....?

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
I've seen them battling for space during the day on W 6th. Which reminds me, (and I probably need to post this in the RTA thread), is it really necessary for the trolleys to lay over in front of RTA HQ there on W 6th? They always seem to be parked in the middle of the street stopping traffic.

I just don't agree with this argument. No one is forcing these people to live so far away from one of the region's most important employment center. This is a defeatist attitude that accepts that there's nothing we can do about sprawl. Rather than spending this money on a sprawl-enabling road project, why not invest it in revitalizing the neighborhoods surrounding University Circle? No one is "forcing" them, but "fighting sprawl" implies actually trying to force them to do the opposite. Why? Especially with tax money that is largely coming from them. The idea of forcing, or even "nudging" people to adopt lifestyles they don't prefer and using their taxes to do so is pretty much the definition of what the right opposes about the big government left. The OC doesn't even facilitate new sprawl. Its primary role may be to improve connectivity to the existing sprawl, but it also brings badly needed changes to the areas it traverses. How would "revitalizing the neighborhoods" be different from 60s style urban renewal. I very much dislike urban sprawl, and believe it to be unsustainable in the long term, but there is a right and a wrong way to fight it. Rather than trying to punish people who choose to locate in farflung suburbs, give them a reason to voluntarily come back. There are a lot of ways to do that. Making it as easy as possible for people to get to urban jobs is a worthy goal. Encouraging redevelopment of a destitute and largely abandoned part of town is also a worthy goal. Relieving congestion, before it becomes as bad as many other auto-oriented cities, is a worthy goal. If you don't do these sorts of things, then the city proper becomes perceived as a less attractive place to live, work, and start businesses, and then, you will soon find that more and more commutes are suburb-to-suburb, and that really isn't an optimal outcome for anyone. I have no problem with this. What I do have a problem with is listening to suburbanites act like the city is a drain on the taxpayer, when meanwhile they are the ones building new interchanges in farm fields in Avon Lake on our dime. Meanwhile, the employment center's existing roads go without maintenance to the point of being a danger to society.

I welcome any competition for the worst grocery store in the country, Giant Turkey. I hope Meijers moves east....

I'm all for this. And think it should continue around the perimeter of Burke Lakefront to fully connect with the 72nd St park/marina.

Is there data showing this? Do people pay more to live at Quay 55 than on Euclid Ave? I personally would rather live near restaurants, retail and nightlife than on the lake, even with the upgraded view. That's not even close to being the same. Come on now. I know u can do better than that. Over at Quay 55 there's Quay and nothing else. I'm borderline stunned that it's even controversial that people want to live off the water and willing to pay a premium to do it. I didn't think that was earth shattering news. And just because you would prefer something else doesn't make my point any less valid. People get so caught up in what they want and can't see the forest from the trees. If they build some residences now, it would be pretty similar. The residents would be down there on an island, with a great view, and pain in the arse traffic 10 days a year, but not much else. That's all I was getting to. Questioning the "stupid amounts" of money.

International Flights
I've done a few of these. The longest for me though was the Dulles-Johannesburg route with a fuel stop in Dakar, which added a couple hours to the journey.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
What's the rumor exactly? Rivers isn't happy about the idea that the Bolts could "bolt" for L.A. So the rumor is he's reluctant to resign. IMHO Rivers would do just fine in the AFC North. He's like a better version of Joe Flacco, though I think Flacco's arm is a bit stronger. His record in December, if I remember correctly is astounding... something like 33-6. But I don't think Rivers or the Chargers are going anywhere. Not resigning him would cause a fan revolt here in SD. I read that he wasn't sure how much longer he would play and it seemed like he was contemplating retirement in the near future. I wouldn't mind having him though. He's really glued to his family. They don't want to leave SD. He'd also be too close to his "regular" job with the Cleveland Fire department.... ;)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
They are a few years off, but it's never too early for city officials to start the schmoozing. Even if it is a low-cost airline experimenting with trans-Atlantic routes.... $15 Europe flights? Ryanair board OKs plan to fly to USA Europe's largest discount airline says it will begin flights to the United States and plans to sell some seats for less than $15 each way. The board of Irish-based Ryanair on Monday OK'd adding trans-Atlantic flights. That ends years of speculation about when the airline might eventually turn its sights to North America, though the actual launch of the service will take several years to get off the ground. http://www.usatoday.com/story/todayinthesky/2015/03/16/15-europe-flights-ryanair-board-oks-plan-to-fly-to-us/24877427/

Ohio Restaurant Reviews
Agreed. With those kind of standards you're limiting yourself to maybe the restaurant at the Grace Cathedral. And maybe not even that joint. Anywhere you have alcohol and ladies you'll have D-bags. As sure as the sun will rise. And hopefully Cleveland keeps supporting all these establishments.

Not for this thread but I'd be careful with these kinds of comparisons. Most all of the USA's economic and banking transactions with all of South/Central America run through Miami. Per this list, Cleveland is 27th nationally, while Miami ranks 11th: http://www.usmayors.org/metroeconomies/2013/201311-report.pdf

MLB: General News & Discussion
Of all the stadiums in MLB that "could" be turned around, I would give the Rogers Centre a try. Sure it's not the small format parks that are the trend these days. But the concourses and suites are not THAT bad. Nothing a hundred mil couldn't polish up in an offseason.

I really feel this starts from the top. Since 99 our ownership has been questionable, but now it's downright laughable. I wish Pegula, Rex Ryan and the Bills luck. Hope they knock off NE this year.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Was that just today? I was passing through Gordon Square and saw lots of police lights further west on Detroit. I heard about it last night, so probably unrelated. Though on second thought, it's not out of the question there could be more bullet damage, or a related crime involved. Then you could see that triggering a broader investigation. No this must have been something more active. From what I can tell there were 8-10 cars all with lights on. That wouldn't happen for a follow up investigation. Will have to watch the blotter to see what it was.

Sprawl Post-Recession - Why Are Developers Still Building It?
We need to send a seed colony of suburbanites to Europe and let them live for a couple years. Could make for some good reality TV.

Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
They normally have them on at night in March. My very uneducated guess has always been to help get that grass growing. I've remembered this as well--I always thought it was just the crews working OT to waken the Jake from the winter slumber. Either grounds and/or just basic maintenance in the stands, etc.
