  1. Stark difference in short-term approach from Bills, Browns The Buffalo Bills are a mere three-hour drive from Cleveland. But the way the Bills have approached building their team in the past week makes it seem like the Browns reside in a different hemisphere. http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/12271/stark-difference-in-short-term-approach-with-bills-browns
  2. Funneling to B has been the norm, but I would be surprised to see it so early. I guess it makes sense for TSA budgets--might as well have the open access right in the middle of all three concourses, especially since A & B are seeing more action with the reductions at United.
  3. My exwife finally took the kids to the burbs because we both became tired of parenting for other parents. Kids by nature are all good. But when their lazy, addicted, useless parents let them run wild and have zero respect for other adults, authority, etc, it becomes tiring trying to correct them and make sure your own kids understand what they are doing is wrong. Where we lived in Lakewood we had an entire street full of these kinds of kids, because their parents had moved there to escape Cleveland schools. I respect them for that, but you also have to step up your parental responsibilities. Sure, the same exists in the suburbs. But it's in far less numbers. It's easy to keep your kids away from the one or two bad kids, rather than an entire street full.
  4. Great news. Love the comments from the out ring basement dwellers. Always filled with intelligent insight.

  6. Good news from Cleveland. If we can grow new-economy jobs and keep building old manufacturing ones, things should be looking up.
  7. I understand this argument, and why the proponents would argue for it (union lobbys, etc). But just the upgrading roads and bridges to better standards would take a generation to complete, probably more if we included rail, etc. I don't see why they could fight against it, given that they would be employed for years to come.
  8. This blogger nails it: US roads are built by the lowest bidder, with no quality controls in place: http://aproposfrance-usa.blogspot.com/2011/08/on-why-roads-are-worse-in-us-than-in.html While our military has some of the most exacting standards for suppliers of even the most miniscule parts, the public puts little emphasis on safety and durability of something we use every day. I don't see any improvement in this as long as the congressional culture of "spending money on anything is bad" exists (except, of course, when the money is spent in their home district--then bring on the pork!).
  9. KJP--what do you make of Boehner's non-vote? Or am I over-thinking his need for a spray-tan appointment that day?

Was just out back surveying the same. I'm ready for the melt...but not looking forward to that task!
  11. Since we lack such a new rock/alternative station and having one would be good for these venues (and good for the city), perhaps the owners of these three venues should team together to start such a station. Terrestrial radio is not much of a factor anymore, especially in the "alternative" circles. Which is why not many more exist even across the nation. Radio can still play a large role. I think Case, JC, CSU and BW do a great job with their college stations. But they just don't have the resources to create a scene. Now KEXP in Seattle is fine template for what terrestrial radio can be for a city; and something that I would really love to see in Cleveland. KEXP is an amazing resource to find up and coming bands. They are living, breathing proof that music did not die 1995 (LOL @ Whipjacka). Their dj's are knowledgeable and have a great working relationship with both local and internationally famous artists. They're a big part of the Seattle music scene. https://www.youtube.com/user/kexpradio If it's any consolation, San Diego radio sucks. It's like some station manager fired all the staff, went yard sailing and got every cd and then put them in a 20 disc changer set on random play. But I expect that from San Diego, its always been a musical backwater. Now Cleveland, that's a place with a history and a ton of creative talent....a place I expect to be a major player in the current music scene. KEXP is a college outlet. Cleveland's aren't as polished, but still fill a need. Perhaps I should have clarified...COMMERCIAL Terrestrial radio is a non-factor. But that is a subject for another thread. I'm glad the Odeon is reopening. I wish them luck.

  13. I predicted this WAY upthread having been in Charlotte for the DNC. I'd be surprised if they use the rail to shuttle GOP attendees to waiting charter buses somewhere. If they close it it would be security concerns, and the "help" would have to find other ways downtown to work their event....
  14. Touche....and I agree that this would be better.
  15. The skeptical Clevelander in me fears this. One little financial crisis and we're left with just another parking structure....
  16. I'd rather they put a 1st place team on the field. Then they wouldn't have to worry about marketing gimmicks. They might just sell out multiple seasons at 81 games each....
  17. I do...vividly remember going to pick up my grandparents after a trip they had one to Mexico. I'm guessing it's the only time they ever flew anywhere. There was no security that I remember, and pay toilets, which as a youngster confused me.
  18. Is the NFL deal still with Nike? That was a vast improvement over the Reebok designs.
  19. I've never waited more than 5 minutes in a Wegmans, especially in the express lanes. The stores in Western New York usually have two levels of express lanes as well, some are 12 items and less and some are 24 items and less, which increases your options even more. And self-checkout is super easy if everything goes right and you're the first person in the line. If you're behind Mildred buying her cat food with 17 kinds of coupons from the hover-round, not so much....
  20. It occurs to me that the anti-rail sentiment at RTA could be self-defeating. Most of my white, middle-class suburbanite friends and colleagues never use public transit except when they ride the rapid downtown to an event. And the never, ever, ever, EVER, board a bus. Even in other cities with highly effective bus service. Even on a brand-new BRT system with shiny new buses. Trains are viewed as safe, clean, civilized and acceptable to them. I can't imagine a train load of Browns fans being stuck on the tracks, pushed into the station and having to climb the platform. Or being put on a shuttle buses with a disorientated and under-trained driver to continue the journey downtown. So if RTA lets our rail die, they may lose a valuable ally in the suburban middle class voter who does use the trains to get downtown on occasion to avoid parking, etc. These folks would never support a bus-only system. Their tax dollars should not go to buses. The powers that be at RTA should take heed and get their bifocal prescription updated. Their nearsighted neglect now may be their undoing in the future.
  21. I'm just happy to have some connection happening, whatever we call it. For too many years Cleveland's urban renaissance has existed in tiny little enclaves, not connected to any others. It's nice to see Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway inching closer to each other.
  22. I feel bad for the employees. Maybe Giant Eagle will actually put them to work as cashiers in the bigger stores instead of making their customers do the work for them.... Good grief. Someone else complaining about self-checkout? I've see that complaint from a few people on UO and it always makes me laugh. I prefer self-checkout if I only have a few things. It's faster. If I have a lot, I go to a cashier. It's really simple: if you don't want to self-check, then don't. And stop complaining about it here Sounds like you like it Jeremy? Perhaps you should apply? ;) Giant Eagle could use a few more (hundred) cashiers. I am college-educated and capable of operating the scanners. But in the end it always seems to take longer with the verifications and such, even with only a few items. And in reality, I'd like to see Giant Eagle (and other retailers like Home Depot, etc) hire more Americans. These are good paying jobs for some people. I also suggest you go to a REAL grocery store like Wegmans and witness what a pleasure it is to see a bank of 20 human cashiers blasting through a high volume checkout in no time at all.

Me personally, I would like to see a bridge built in the style of Don's Lighthouse Grille, which is adjacent to the western end of the park... Good idea. And while we're at it can you get Don to make the clocktower show the accurate time? Must have been struck by lighting sometime back in the 1950's....
  25. If those backwards guys we call "legislators" downstate don't start changing their ways that 7th most populous designation will keep falling....
