  1. Houston is so dependent on oil money that it goes through booms and busts. I remember visiting my parents friends there in the 80's as a kid during a bust time and every other house in their neighborhood or proto-McMansions was for sale or foreclosed on. It was a oddly creepy solitude....
  2. Whoa... Sounds like an execution. I'm interested to hear where this investigation goes. Agreed. Certainly someone who knew them. That is usually a pretty quiet area of Cleveland...
  3. Man, woman found dead, shot multiple times in West Side residence CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A man and woman were discovered dead in a West Side residence Thursday night, both shot multiple times, police said. Police were called to the duplex residence on the 14400 block of Triskett Avenue after the downstairs neighbors became concerned because the car belonging the victims had not moved all day. They also noticed the blinds from an upstairs window had been removed, police said. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/02/man_woman_found_dead_shot_mult.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  4. Good news! That building has been an eyesore for years, though still maintained. Probably a good pickup for them as it still has good bones. Hopefully some of the others in the area will fill in as well!
  5. My point on the Waterfront line was to address your concern for a large investment for few people. And the Waterfront line fits that category. Probably even more so, as there were 70,000 operations at Burke last year, so extrapolating there were probably 100,000 people traveling through there, plus another 50,000 at the airshow? The Waterfront "Ghost Train"....? Not so much... As mentioned upthread, I'm all for redeveloping it if a plan existed, with financing, to do something meaningful with it. But we're coming up on 15 years of the Flats redevelopment and it's still chugging along to a finish. I wouldn't expect to see 450 acres redeveloped in my lifetime....
  6. Might as well kill the waterfront line too, since it only exists to take a few commuters around to Tower City, and maybe some Browns fans 8 days a year. Most days it rides back and forth with an operator and no passengers. I jest of course, but your post is somewhat accurate. Burke is not an economic engine. But it COULD be. Upthread someone suggested to put someone other than Ricky Smith in charge of this. I agree 100%. Find a young, energetic, aviation-minded person with a slant for economic and urban development, and put them on the task of making Burke into a useful tool. It is one thing downtown Cleveland has that nearly all the surrounding eastern and midwestern cities do not: a downtown airport.
  7. Darn I liked MoCa. But they never seemed capable of grabbing any of the rush hour Starbucks crowd. Parking at the Starbucks is tough in the morning. At MoCa it was nonexistent, except for a couple spaces on the side street.
  8. Good idea Pugu. I just cross-posted my ideas from above as well. Will see if he prints them as he did yours.
  9. I'd be happy with this... it's all we need, really. Where are the people going to run for drinks and weed during layovers?
  10. My vote for "Carnegie Corner" is placed!
  11. Extremely true. Yet in the last 30 years hospitals have taken HUGE strides to make them more comfortable and inviting on the inside. (I don't know how old you are, but I remember as a child all hospitals were white and sterile). Cleveland Clinic is a world leader in many areas of healthcare. It would be nice if they led the charge for hospitals and their interaction on the outside with their community.
  12. It wouldn't be crazy impossible to work out a deal with the FAA to have a bike path around the outer perimeter of the field to allow for access east to west. Just need money for fencing!
  13. I agree. I'm all for freeing up lakefront land for development, but let's face it--if we closed Burke it would take 75 years for developers to fill that space. In the meantime, it's a mistake for the city to not use it as an economic development tool. There is a brand new FBO going in, and the original terminal building sits quiet daily. Make this into a mixed-use jobs-creator: 1. Free landing fees for companies who put their HQ in downtown Cleveland. 2. Free landing fees for a regional upstart boutique airline who wants to service BKL (I'm thinking Porter Air with service to Toronto/Montreal/NYC). 3. Condo buildings in the current terminal parking lot, for those empty-nesters who own single engine private planes (an urban airpark...might be a first of it's kind?) 4. Grants for aviation-related businesses to base at BKL. 5. Grants for an aviation-career related charter highschool (in the spirit of Aviation High). 5. A destination restaurant in the terminal building, complete with rooftop dining with 360 degree views of the lake and downtown.
  14. Having some familiarity with that industry, I would be really unsurprised if one of the dancers set this up. I can easily see the kind of guy that goes to the strip clubs by himself being enticed to go somewhere with one of them, her co-worker, and another guy. In fact, I'd wager that's what happened. Mama's gotta keep herself in candy....
  15. That would be correct since student pilots are constantly practicing takeoffs and landings, including touch and gos, without ever leaving the field pattern. This would explain the large numbers at OSU.
  16. My bad--I read their site and it was based on 2008 data.
  17. Its the fourth busiest airport in Ohio, and it's not needed? What does that say about the rest of them....?
  18. Hmm not one mention of RTA in the entire survey. And they also have Northwest Airlines as an option for airlines used....?
  19. I'd like to see both a higher-end grocery store AND a neighborhood destination pub. There is room for both, and in a mixed-use setting would work well with patios to hang out on, etc.
  20. I had noticed the Coast Guard doing some ice breaking in the channel to the mouth last week, but never saw a vessel in port: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/zoom:14/centerx:-81.6945/centery:41.5125
  21. Edgewater Park doesn't do much for me. I like having it and looking at it as I ride by it on the bus. But I'm not a park person. I don't have dogs. I don't have kids. I don't throw Frisbee or fly a kite. But I need groceries. And I suspect a full-service grocery store would do a lot more for this neighborhood than a park. I agree 100% with you KJP, however I also support surf's point as well. Every neighborhood has a focal point. For me there are three major focal points in the area that form a triangle around Clifton/Baltic/Edgewater: 1. W117th/Clifton retail district (This area is hurt by the vast majority of the money/residents residing in 44107). 2. West Blvd Rapid Station (this has TOD written all over it!) 3. Edgewater Park Only one of these three are getting any forward progress, and much of that is due to the Metroparks taking over, along with the involvement of the residents and CDC of Detroit Shoreway. It's time for our residents and leadership to make the same commitments to this neighborhood.
  22. Prior to the Odeon I believe it was called the Draft House. But I may be confusing that with the Empire up off E9th?
  23. I agree. Food is passable. If you've had one too many of said beers, it tastes good. Otherwise I would never choose to eat there.
  24. Amen brother. And your mention of Cameron wanting to bolt says it all. There is a guy that would be a superstar in the old Browns organization. A "Gronk" for all Cleveland to adore. Instead he's going to run to another team to get away from the follies happening around our front office. Sad...
  25. No kidding? I guess I misunderstood how they worked all these years. You learn something new every day. As I mentioned upthread, perhaps there is something I do not know about train brakes. But I do know about truck & bus brakes. I'd be damned scared to be driving in front of a semi in weather like this if cold weather caused their brakes to fail!
