  1. My impression of "most" RTA employees (I am sure there are exceptions) is they are not there to push forward an agenda. They are there to collect a check until their pension starts. And then maybe they'll collect another check somewhere else. They are not idealistic folks--they are bureaucrats collecting checks. We (the citizens) need to push for these initiatives, via our politicians and neighborhood organizations.
  2. I'll show me! What are all these interior states going to do if (when) gas goes up to $10/gallon and they can no longer afford their pickup trucks and semi-smooth roads? The coasts will be positioned to survive. The middle of the country may truly be fly-over, as it turns into a Mad Max wasteland!
  3. Can they take over the rest of the Giant Eagles in the area too?
  4. Beyond all the other rail problems you've mentioned, Buffalo has played in a stadium that is nearly transit-free for their existence, and their fans LOVE to drive to games and tailgate. Hard to tailgate when you take the train to the game.... You could say the opposite as well. There are PLENTY of people who take RTA to Browns games as well as the tailgaters. Choice is good! I don't disagree, but you'd be starting from scratch there. Here in Cleveland the stadium has always been downtown and always served by transit. If the Browns played in a similar environment as Orchard Park, it would be like dropping a stadium out in Avon Lake. It will take Buffalonians (and their HUGE Canadian Bills fan base) a long time to adapt to transit. With this being said, it's a LONG way off as the county there just poured $100 million into the Ralph. I don't think you'll see a new stadium there anytime soon.

  6. I miss the old Best Steak and Gyro on Euclid....
  7. DUB also has preclearance to USA.
  8. I wear my (unlucky) Tomlinson jersey to Browns games too. Buffalo fans have been worse. Maybe I'm just better at defending myself here since I have a good/better knowledge of Cleveland sports than most Browns fans. I want to say that iirc the Browns fans were actually invited by the Buffalo Bills to attend games? I believe you are correct. Probably put together by the Bills marketing staff to sell some extra tickets during those post-super bowl letdown years. Now they are just as miserable as Browns fans up there, perhaps even worse as the rumors of relocation are running rampant.
  9. They are just finishing a $130 million renovation, which will hopefully improve the experience at the "Ralph": http://www.buffalonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=BN&Date=20140529&Category=PHOTOGALLERIES&ArtNo=529009998&Ref=PH In terms of fans, your experience is just like any other visiting team around the NFL. I have family in Buffalo and attend all Browns-Bills games in both cities. My Buffalo family has been treated pretty damn rudely by Browns fans (they describe it as a "hillbilly frat party", populated by drunk douchebags who can't drink a beer without a funnel!). My experience as a Browns fan in Buffalo has been mostly good. A little good-natured razzing, but as a rule Buffalo fans respect the Browns fans because of our shared team and city woes. Plus, when the Browns were gone from 95-99, there was a HUGE contingent of hard core NFL fans who made the trek from Cleveland to Orchard Park for every home game to stay in the game.
  10. What's crazy about this is in the Cleveland market, according to real estate agents I know, there is a GLUT of multi-family housing (in the traditional frame dwelling 2-unit "double"). I don't know why they haven't caught on, since the time is ripe to snap them up cheap, put in modern ammenities, and rent them out!
  11. ... as well as Billy-Bob delegate from Pulaski, Tennessee. Only if he's feeling adventurous and doesn't want to use the GOP provided-shuttle buses to downtown hotels. ;) ;) Cleberger, you must not be reading the news too well... The GOP (and DNC) have chosen (are considering) Cleveland in large part because of it's quality transit facilities, most notably the airport Rapid-to-indoor walkway to the Q. Other cities, esp Columbus and KC, were eliminated because of the lack of such facilities... No way will this so-called shuttle you keep talking out be able to handle the gigantic throngs (conventioneers, media, protesters and others) for this convention. Especially at our small-ish airport with limited park 'n' pickup areas.... And contrary to stereotypes, all Republicans are not rich and can afford chauffeur-driven limos. I'm not digging on Republicans or Democrats. I often work in the convention business and know that transit is not normally considered in a business that routinely books in coaches to shuffle attendees 4-5 blocks from a hotel to a restaurant or meeting center. So while Republicans may be giving the rail access some lip service, the vast vast vast majority of attendees will probably be bussed in on prearranged transport. With this being said, I'm glad we are getting the convention, no matter what their reasoning. The economic benefits and exposure will be tremendous. I just hope our safety forces are up for the task. But that is for another thread....

  13. Gotta make sure the help gets to the convention! ;)
  14. Only when cameras are rolling.
  15. AMEN. I'm hating these designs for that reason. If I want an Auntie Annes and a splash fountain, I'll drive to Crocker Park. I want diversity, movement, noise and energy. Greenspace is for parks. This is our center of commerce and transportation.
  16. Agreed 100%. The rental car/hotel pickup situation downstairs is downright embarrassing for the city of Cleveland. No where to hide in the rain/snow.
  17. Agreed. We all need to demand this from our politicians. IMO the RTA staff are not there to advance the cause of transit. They are there making their check. They are there paying their union dues. As long as they have a job the next 30 years, they are not concerned with philosophical ideals of transit. It's a gig....
  18. I dont' think Lakewood is as gay as it was in the 70s & 80s. I don't think Lakewood was ever all that gay. If anything, the Clifton/Baltic neighborhood had many gay residents (both gay and lesbian), and some anchor gay bars.
  19. My friends in the Heights all seem to agree that the bad elements are due to the poor schools in East Cleveland/Cleveland. According to them, for the most part families living in Cleveland Heights are good, hard working people. Once established in the Heights, they let their families from East Cleveland and Cleveland register their kids as residents in the Heights to get access to better schools. With them comes more elements from inner city schools and poverty stricken neighborhoods. Inevitably their friends from the old neighborhoods start coming around, and with them the trouble that surrounds poor kids from any race. I have no idea if any of this is true, but certainly sounds plausible.
  20. I don't believe that. You dont spend that type of money for no reason. Well you were wrong on Lebron's decision to come home. I suppose you could go 2 for 2. ;) I actually believe Gilbert would spend the $85 million for that land to make the casino happen, without every planning on building there. There was an enormous amount of political pressure at the time and he had to act like he meant business. It doesn't take a Harvard MBA to figure out that $85 million invested in vacant land is well worth it if the other site reaps $500 million in profits in the first 10-20 years?
  21. They already have rail within 2,000 feet. And the 800 parking spaces is probably to win financing from bankers who believe the future is still solely wedded to the almighty car. Well you know, bankers are very smart people. They put together complex things that see into the future for big wins in all areas of finance and commerce. Like default credit swaps. ;)
  22. Amen. And 90% of the naysayers are trolls who live out and the burbs, watch Fox News all day and night, and never bother to see what is actually good and happening in the city. Without the city, their suburbia would cease to exist, but they stay holed up in their own mindset.
  23. Sorry to derail--was thinking just downtown. Forgot about county HQ. None the less, it's exciting and we'll take them!
  24. Especially Cleveland's second tower crane in as many years. Let's hope the growth keeps happening. We need jobs!
  25. Gordon arrested again. Time for an intervention. Get this kid help. http://www.wncn.com/story/25946896/nfl-player-gordon-arrested-for-dui-in-raleigh
