  1. That's because they were renovated in 2007. The Red Line cars are just now getting renovated. See my photos from December of the first Red Line car to be renovated.... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4504.msg687211#msg687211 I also think the Red Line cars probably looked old when they were new. They have that Welcome Back Kotter vibe to them.... ;)
  2. In MY opinion, if Gordon was an addict, he would test off-the-chart for TCH. No amount of green tea or herbal vitamins is going to mask the consumption of an addict. If anything he's guilty of making poor choices in friends, which is sometimes a very human condition. Especially those that grow up poor and find themselves with a bunch of money (see: most any lottery winner).
  3. Our rail cars are old, but they seem to be in better condition than the healthline buses! Exactly my point. Maybe he should have gone to the Healthline bus garage.
  4. ^^Sounds like he just needs to get traded to the Broncos and tell the NFL that his activities are completely legal!
  5. How did he like the 30+ year old rail cars? The ones on display there look nice and clean and refurbished. We should have shown him more reality.
  6. It's going to be a mess all summer, but I think the finished product should definitely help rejuvenate interest in this neighborhood.
  7. I am as well--just because of where it is. This is not a major commercial street with lots of pedestrian activity. It's a dead end of sorts set on a hillside. I do hope they improve the overall design look as these things are starting to look dated.
  8. Well we can at least add it to the list of profitable real estate investments made by our leaders. City and County politicians really make great real estate speculators. I'm interested to see what they get back for the land after all these years.
  9. Anyone over 30 shouldn't drink it, unless you like not sleeping due to horrendous heartburn.

They thought Denver and it's 300+ days a year of sunshine was volatile? No wonder they like Cleveland! They must be gluttons for punishment! :)
  11. This is the article I was thinking about... it says this.. "To prevent a competitor from moving in, the grocer placed deed restrictions on the church that make it nearly impossible to build a sizable grocery store on that property or the surrounding land. Those restrictions don't roll off until late 2022. Giant Eagle is the only party that can lift them." So for all of us who wanted a different grocer there, that is why. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/11/giant_eagle_plans_small-format.html Merica! Home of the "Free" Market!
  12. I hope not even 1/10th of this is true. Apparently the Patriots were not very impressed with Manziel. http://www.brobible.com/sports/article/johnny-manziel-scouting-report-new-england-patriots/
  13. They could serve me free range chicken and locally grown kale on a silver platter in the register line, and I still wouldn't shop at Giant Eagle. Horrible selection, prices and people (when you can actually find them and don't have to check out your own groceries).
  14. Yes as fast as the good news comes, so does the bad: http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/10908822/josh-gordon-cleveland-browns-faces-season-long-suspension?src=mobile
  15. Lots of good press for the Browns. I like how they are all focused on the fans "deserving a winner." I hope they're right! http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2014/story/_/id/10905464/johnny-manziel-benefit-being-picked-no-22-cleveland-browns-2014-nfl-draft?ex_cid=espnsoc

I heard the overall countywide vote was actually closer in 1990 as well. It was something like 52-48% then, compared to 60-40% today.
  17. I felt the same way, until I learned the business model is actually a community wellness center that includes rock climbing. They also plan on yoga lessons and classes (hot now) along with other fitness offerings and room rentals for community activities. If this was paired with something more along the lines of a whole foods or other healthy food store we'd have a real destination corner!
  18. I was 100% anti-Manziel. But now we have him, and I wish him the best, because nothing could be better for this town right now than the Browns actually contending for a championship. To his credit, his in-the-moment interview was the opposite of douchebag--completely classy with signs of leadership. Time to sit back and see what happens!
  19. [quote author=Mendo link=topic=6443.msg707264#msg707264 date=1399583450 @Hts121 I wouldn't doubt other football crazy towns talk a lot of draft. I just doubt the teams in the 20's are as obsessed about it. How many times have you heard people glibly say the draft is our super bowl? This year put me over the edge. Tom Brady was selected in the 6th Round in 2000. I'm sure everyone in Boston (and perhaps in other NFL cities) are watching to see where Belichek and management do. I personally find those picks more interesting than the Top 20 or whatever.
  20. Glad this day is finally here. Going to type three times quickly: Please no Johnny Football Please no Johnny Football Please no Johnny Football Ok there I'm good now.

Agree 100% Mr Whip. The American oligarchy is alive and well. It's happening in Cleveland, and throughout the USA courtesy of tax deals, loopholes and leverages given to companies to do business locally. And after years of funneling money into a corporation and that gravy goes away, so does the corporation, off to another locale willing to ante up to lure them there. So as far as the sin tax goes, at least we are funding this indirectly without going straight into the general fund. I feel this is one area where Europe has an advantage up on us, where it isn't as easy across international lines to engage in these kinds of ransom demands for tax benefits. It's not like 1,000 employees from France would up and move to Germany, like many Detroit workers have done to chase auto factories into the southern states. And even if they could, the respective governments would not allow it to happen.

No the sports teams are one component of a major market I believe is worth saving. It was one of the holes that needed plugged. I'd be fine with paying another 3 cents on my beer to fund a jobs creation package, but IMO letting the government do this directly is way less efficient than the sports teams. The politicians all jump in and carve up the money so they all end up with some "neighborhood job center," rather than building one big factory.

Pee in the wind anyone? Sure we could charge them property taxes. But Cleveland students already get some of the highest spending per student in the ENTIRE STATE. Another $8 million is not going to make a significant difference. Certainly not enough to make a large scale migration back in from the suburbs--that is going to take years to undo the damage done in the 60's & 70's. And yes, we're going to keep our sports teams for the foreseeable future. Good news as a major city we want major league teams, as well as their spin off investments (especially when they win--fingers crossed). What would be ideal is to bring all of these things together. So instead of investing our time in fighting over the scraps of what's left here, we should all invest our energy into moving forward. And the only way to save Cleveland is to stop the population loss and make this an attractive place for young people and immigrants. Jobs jobs jobs.....and I believe we need to start from the bottom with manufacturing again.
  24. The best way to keep those things happening at an RTA station is to get more people riding. That would have never happened if they were on a crowded platform, with hundreds of people coming and going. Some of those stations are ghost towns after 6 pm.

I stand corrected Hts. I thought they still had the original leases intact where the the Cavs and Indians were invoicing for things like light bulbs and toiletpaper, resulting in a negative rent payment. Apparently this has been restructured :) As far as the Browns names, I don't recall Modell just walking away from it. There was a lot of money to be made from the colors and name, so legal action was indeed required.
