Let's hope he's not an Al Davis in training. Hire some GOOD football people and let them bring you glory. That is your destiny Jimmy!

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
You both are correct when thinking in terms of passenger satisfaction, something United and other airlines ultimately do not care about. As a CFO of an airline I'm sure they're looking at economies of scale. Having all regional flights out of one hub cuts down on staffing, especially on the support side. In addition the volume lets them negotiate better costs on jet fuel, de-icing, etc. I'm with you 100% that CLE is better for customers....but I'm not running an airline. In the end we can all vote with our credit cards and not fly United. But as with most things in America, cheaper is always better--and most of the flying public will opt for a $hitty experience in ORD at a lower fare than a more expensive and (pleasurable) day in Cleveland.

There is a god. I wonder if there was any movement in Vegas on the Browns Super Bowl chances?

Thought provoking. Wow - 450 acres. I never did fully realize just how much space that was until reading this article. The Burke property could fit three 18-hole golf course on it. Six Crocker Parks. One Cedar Point with about 90 acres left over. And do what with it? It's taken us 10 years to get the first building put up on the Flats East bank site, and we're just now starting Phase II. Sure 450 lakefront acres would be great, but closing BKL would not instantly make a Toronto waterfront laden with skyscrapers. I personally like driving by BKL on a game day etc and seeing 15-20 bizjets, or maybe even the occasional B737 parked at Millionair. I think the city should use this resource more to attract jobs and employers here--for the convenience of a downtown airport.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
I heard that too, and was surprised by it as well. He may be just taking the outnumbered (among his audience) side on a "hot button" topic. I was reading that "less government is good government" line from him, which I do not disagree with in many cases. I may actually tune in today to see if he gets these local mayors on the phone.

Although it's not within the city's purview -- it's the FAA keeping Burke open. Burke keeps recreational flyers and slower planes out of Hopkins, as well as providing for overflow/emergency. still have capacity at the county airport for recreational flyers & slower planes Ask the NIMBYS in Willoughby Hills and Richmond Heights if they would go for those operations..... Pretty sure most of the NIMBYs were upset about lengthening runways to take larger planes. I don't think they'd protest more small planes. I wouldn't take that bet. If they found out BKL was closing, they'd be out in force.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
For what it's worth, I was listening to WTAM yesterday (due to the weather and need for traffic, not out of choice!). Trivassano was discussing regionalism and I was surprised by his support for the subject. He said they were going to try to get some local "experts" on today's show to continue the discussion.

Trader Joes cancels Portland store due to gentrification concerns
Yes, absolutely property owners want this. That's the struggle going on here. I'm guessing there's a high proportion of renters so they have a strong voice to counter the voices in favor of the development. I don't generally have a problem with gentrification unless the taxpayers are paying for it in a highly populated poor neighborhood. That's what seems to be the case here. ....Further fueling the fire that black politicians WANT to keep their constituents poor and beholden to them. Its a tough line to walk, but ultimately they should be doing what's best for the city and the neighborhood. If that means growing the tax base and improving the schools through some degree of gentrification, then they should be fighting for it. Perhaps in this instance it should have meant that a developer has to supply "x" number of low income housing units to get their support. There were certainly more solutions than just killing the deal.

I think a Hub is probably by now a losing proposition. But if we get more carriers in it would yield more non stop destinations, to meaningful markets. I feel bad for the United employees and of course feel the shame as a Clevelander for losing hub status, but in the end I hope it makes my life as a frequent flier better-with more options and cheaper fares.

Shocker In corporate parlance, I'd say they're "building the airplane while flying it...." Pun intended.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
The first part of this statement is patently untrue. The second part is very subjective, but outside of the worst "rush-hour" times, security takes 10 minutes or less in 90% of my trips. Security for 10 minutes of my time is a fair trade-off. The Point being, the days where you could pull in the garage 15-20 minutes before your flight and still catch it are over. It is much more of a hassle now. Business travelers adapt because they have to adapt but having the choice to fly from Cleveland to Akron or Toledo vs drive is an easy choice to make with the additional time spent in the airport. Add in the fact that some company budgets will not support flying those short distances anymore because of the additional costs too. Only if you don't know what you're doing :) I routinely go from my bedroom to my gate at Hopkins, start to finish, in 30 minutes. If you're already checked in, no baggage, TSA Pre, etc it's not that difficult barring anything unusual happening....

Also for those of us traveling on business, the time at the airport can be productive with emails and laptop set up in the United Club, while self-driving is not always productive, depending on your business.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
Ahhh, I havnt been out by the airport in a while, but had heard about the garage being taken down. Just figured that it was the whole garage. Thanks jfristik. No worries! It was very confusing the way it was reported. There were actually two big parking garages. The much older, structurally unstable parking garage was farther east of the newer parking garage. The two were connected by sky bridge, which the last time I saw still stands as a bridge to nowhere. The newer garage that was not demolished also had mini LED displays installed over every parking space that light up red when occuppied and green when vacant. It is a nice addition that makes finding a parking spot much easier. The bridge to nowhere is still there, but they are adding a stair entry on the end of it to the new "Orange" surface lot. Hopefully someday there will be another structure here after Cleveland finds its way out of the current economic depression.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I suggest forwarding your complaints to RTA management. Not sure if anything ever gets done about them, but perhaps if there is enough about a particular driver they will be reassigned to a route where there are more regular customers and won't cause public relations problems. I had a similar incident on the Red Line a couple years back at the airport. There was a sign on the fare machines at the entrance saying to please pay on the train. When I boarded the train the operator SCREAMED at me saying I was supposed to pay at the entrance. I offered her to call RTA police and we could both walk back there and see the posted sign saying to pay on the train, because I wasn't leaving the train. She finally relented. I think she was the cousin of the lady at Tower City who shook me down another time over the actual age of my 9 year old daughter and whether or not she should have a children's all day pass! WTF?????

If you're over 6' (like me) even the A seats are miserable. To top off the knee pain, the seat pitch is so small I cannot even work because my laptop screen is too close to my chest--made even more impossible if the person in front of me decides to recline--like the short little $%*s like to do!

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Just landed at Hopkins and got home. Somewhere in the capital budget they have to replace some of the moving walkways and escalators. I've never been in an airport where these things go down as much as CLE. Today the one of the walkways from C-D was down, as well as the long escalator down to the RTA level. Adding to my list of complaints about CLE, which while manageable for me, may look bad for connecting passengers.

Cleveland growth strategies -- hit singles or home runs?
80% of first generation US-born Mexicans speak English. I doubt if you compared to turn of the 20th century Italians, Germans and Poles that the figure would be much different. http://www.statisticbrain.com/immigration-statistics/

Cleveland growth strategies -- hit singles or home runs?
We don't like illegal aliens being here. It's probable that most of them are Mexicans, but the issue is that when people come here illegally, we lose control of who is here. Said control is a fundamental right of any nation. I just had this debate with my mother the other day: When the Irish, Germans, Jews, etc were arriving from Europe, they lied about having family here, changed their names, hid felonies, etc etc etc---all to gain access to this great land. If they only had to get across a land border or river, they would have hopped a fence or waded through a river just like the Mexicans. They were seeking opportunity, and risked everything to get here--even if it meant their arrival was subject to "less than truthful" standards. Do we need immigration laws and standards? Absolutely. But it's absurd to think that some poor field worker wouldn't risk life and limb to come pick tomatoes for you.
