  1. Could be a possibility, but CSU would have to give them room to negotiate on rent. Slightly off topic, I wonder if SMG taking the Convention Center includes Public/Music Hall?
  2. Still not connecting the dots from your examples above to the CSU board deliberately trying to shut the venue down, but ok if you feel that way. I still feel compelled to say it was a huge show in a venue that doesn't do many these days due to the restraint placed on it by the board in negotiating rent deals. Not unusual in state or city run facilities.

Of course. There were plenty of Tea Party politicians blasting the ARRA in front of the cameras, but sending letters requesting funding at the same time. Part of the theatre of politics. If only the rubes understood.
  4. Ok well go on then to back up your speculation, using the examples you provided. What purpose would Global Spectrum see in running the facility into the ground and losing their contract? By slowing the restroom lines? Not sure I'm understanding you.
  5. Food & Beverage: Signs of an underutilized venue. See management below. Bathrooms: Same. Are you male or female? I bet the Wolstein has a 50/50 distribution of restrooms--something many arenas address by converting depending on the shows. I'm guessing Nine Inch Nails was a sausage...I mean heavily-male dominated crowd. Crowd Control: Same security company that does other events in Cleveland. Unfair to blame the Wolstein here. Sound: Too many variables to blame the venue. I've seen shows there that sound great. It's an arena with concrete walls, seats, and a roof. They're all the same to varying degrees. Management: I highly doubt your assertion. Probably just lack of experience in the venue between management and staff. If they did 50 concerts a year, they would improve their scores.
  6. The contract was up and Global Spectrum took over after submitting a bid.
  7. Something about him or something about the League? I'm betting it says something about the league because we know the league is not infallible and we know that sometimes they miss on good players. Hoyer has enough talent to stick around another 5 plus years in this league backup or starter, if he can come back from injury. Those two games and those game tapes bought him that time League wide, but I guess what I really mean is that he earned it. One thing is certain about Hoyer. He hadn't mastered the concept of sliding. He looked as graceful as Bernie after a night out in the burbs on that run! Belicheck still makes Brady practice sliding weekly. I wonder if Chud does the same? Or maybe he should now....
  8. We won't argue about Weeden's issue with holding the ball too long.... but, correct me if I'm wrong, Hoyer got hurt when we were down last night 7-0 and we 'managed' to win the game, no? Confirmed. Hoyer had zero impact, other than to maybe motivate our special teams and defense knowing that Weeden was the guy!
  9. I agree. Hoyer was as far from a foregone conclusion as one could get. He could equally be Tim Couch. Did I mention I liked the uniforms?
  10. I like the uniforms too. 37 points and our quarterback should be playing minor league baseball. I'll take it--but wish we could find those few more pieces!
  11. I think it would be interesting to build dorm space around the Wolstein... It could be CSU's answer to the Village at 115 dorms at Case Right, or a hotel geared towards students and parents--but could also be used for business groups needing the conference center as a part of their group trip.
  12. There's always next year. And in this case, I hope the 42,000 in attendance last night have seen what Francona is capable of making these guys accomplish. I only wish this game had been a couple nights earlier. They had such great momentum--then too many days off!
  13. Wolstein doesn't have ice making capabilities. So huge expense to facilitate that move. Agree with your other points however.
  14. Why not then a repurposing incorporating the Wolstein into the conference center. There is plenty of space on the site to add towers.
  15. I'm hoping its the Bills rushing!
  16. I personally have no problem with a megachurch. And strippers. The more the merrier. It would be shortsighted to not welcome a weekly rental to a church. Their members spend money in restaurants and potentially stay around downtown after the service. In Houston a church actually BOUGHT the old arena when the Rockets moved to the Toyota Center.
  17. Browns Stadium makes lots of money. Just not for the taxpayers who paid for it! Haslem is doing ok though! The deal at the Q is even worse with Gilbert and the Cavs charging back all kinds of routine expenses like lightbulbs as "capital costs."
  18. Once upon a time the Jehovah Witnesses used to rent the Convo I would say one weekend ever month? Do they still do that?
  19. I agree--this would be the equivalent of Kasich sending federal dollars for another state to spend. I'll show me! Rather than fight this, we should lobby to make it as good as it can be.
  20. (emphasis mine) Is this part definitely true? Per the Cleveland.com article, CSU already does contract out the booking, promotion, and management of the place to a professional firm, no? They do have a contract but the contract doesn't allow for them to change the rent, negotiate, buy content, etc like other Global Spectrum Managed facilities. You'll note they mentioned a couple promoters outright canceling dates--something that doesn't happen nearly as much in venues that can be flexible in their rental deals.
  21. No thanks. CSU Vikings Mens Basketball is the biggest draw, yet their average attendance is only 2,000 to 4,000 per game over the last 20-plus years. Their best year was 1997 with an average attendance of 4,589. SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_State_Vikings_men's_basketball That can easily be accommodated at public hall which seats up to 7,000 for basketball. I say tear it down and replace it with some high-rise student housing, CSU hotel and a conference center on the ground floor similar to the Kent State's recently built in downtown Kent. I'd rather see that kind of development go on undeveloped land. CSU just built the Wolstein in the late 80's. It houses all their athletic department--so it does serve a purpose beyond public events. What needs to happen is the University needs to give the management contract to a private firm, and give them carte blanche to run it as they see fit and compete with the Q for rentals. The competition would help attract even more shows to town with more attractive rent deals. Right now you have a state institution saying "this is our rent and we won't budge," so as you'll notice there are rarely any concerts or events there any longer.
  22. That's a cab signal which is tied in with the train's operating controls (called automatic train stop or ATS). All signaled rail lines are divided into "blocks" with signals protecting each block. When a train equipped with ATS enters a block with a yellow signal preceding it, the ATS will beep -- notifying the train's operator to slow the train. If he/she does not respond within a few seconds, then the train is stopped automatically. If a train enters a block protected by a red signal, the ATS will beep longer/more loudly, stop train and usually pretty quickly. While on this subject of signals and operations, what do the flashing lights facing northbound on the bridge over W117 indicate? I thought it may mean a train is approaching to alert transfers from the buses, but they always seem to be flashing?
  23. This was a point I made over and over in the public meetings when people would complain that a lane was being taken away. Relatively few use the curb lanes now anyway~!
  24. That is hideous. Halloween Leprechaun!

He'll make up for it when Lebron comes back in 14.
