Buffalo
Yet inexplicably the area remains quite conservative. Buffalo residents like to think they support New York City/State. But in reality its the other way around--they get way more from Albany and NYC than they give to the treasury. Right now a vast majority of the employment is government thanks to the university systems. It's problems are just like Cleveland's--overwhelming loss of manufacturing jobs without replacing them.

Cleveland: Bars / Nightlife News
I'm guessing if any it could have been during an extreme night of the Riverfest or Bicentennial.

Yep, there's windows facing north. This is a google maps shot from W.9th of the corner of W.9th and Front Ave. Cool--I guess I never really noticed or paid attention!

Ah! Understood. Agree with you on the overall development strategy, which is why I think the hotel component should not dominate the strategy. For the other thread....

Cleveland: Bars / Nightlife News
Metropolis became Trilogy. I spent those years working in the flats and never once saw the police bulldozer mentioned, and DEFINITELY didn't see service crews cleaning the streets at 3 am. I have pictures somewhere to prove the mess the streets were in every morning, as we would stumble home with sun rising! I think Chief Denihan was exaggerating just a bit....

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I agree--but for this reason I think the county, city and region should come together and think outside the box on this. There has to be a tipping point in a public-private partnership that would allow this to be financially feasible. Mixed use residential, retail and hotel must be considered. They could design the tower with condo floors on top, then adapt the design based on demand and financing. I know it sounds like a tough sell, but to me the residential demand downtown makes it at least worth a feasibility study?

That's cool! Do they actually have northward facing windows in there?

That last shot is not Main St. It's Delaware Ave.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Read this in USA Today yesterday--surprised no one posted since it's been a subject of debate here in UO land! Nightengale: Owner calls dwindling crowds 'depressing' PHOENIX -- The Los Angeles Dodgers sat in their visiting clubhouse, staring at the big-screen TV, and couldn't believe what they were seeing. Seats. Lots and lots of seats. Most of them empty. Here were the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers, tied for the American League wild-card lead, and a crowd of only 10,786 was on hand at Tropicana Field. Rest of the story, including talk of economy, jobs lost, and demographics: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2013/09/17/dwindling-crowds-puzzling-for-contending-athletics-indians-rays/2829543/

Amongst all this I read an interesting stat last night: The last time the Browns WON a playoff game was with Belicheck and Saban. Time flies when you're having fun (or not).

Crazy flying stories....
It was pre-911. 1996 if I was forced to guess. I was flying home to CLE via MDW on Southwest. Due to weather, my first leg flight was late arriving to MDW. I did the OJ Simpson run through the concourse getting to my connecting gate to CLE. As typical of my luck, the plane had just pushed off as I ran up to the podium (it was the last flight of the night). Thinking I was going to be spending the night in Midway, I went to the gate agent to see if she could help me with hotel, etc. As I explained my dilemma, she told me not to walk, but RUN to another gate number, where she would put me on a flight to Cleveland. I asked for a boarding pass and she said not to worry--she would call the other gate and let them know I was coming. I sprinted quickly to the designated gate, and a SWA employee was standing at the entrance to the jetway. She waved me through (with no boarding pass) and and ran down the tunnel to my waiting 737. As I entered I expected a full plane and to be sitting in the last row, middle, in front of a toilet. Instead, I was shocked to be the only passenger on the plane! The flight attendant welcomed me, then proceeded to explain that due to the vast weather front causing disruptions across the east coast, that Southwest was repositioning this plane to Cleveland to pick up a dawn flight there the next day. She proceeded to crack me open a Heineken, and invited me to sit in the front row with her and the other FA's! One did a safety briefing for me, while the other two enjoyed a red wine! Once airborne the first officer came out and introduced himself, then invited me into the jump seat. I was sipping on a Heineken and chatting with them, with brief interruptions as they talked to ATC. I remember we talked about our favorite hotel chains...as I probably stay in as many as any pilot! Given the late hour, our empty plane and a tired crew, the trip over lasted only about 30 minutes. It was one flight I wished would have taken longer! :drunk:

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Without defending these little maggots in any way, I would have to believe that the victim was lucky he was white. A black gay man would have been a very desirable target for these youths, who emphasize their "manhood" with these sorts of acts--and have zero respect for gay men of their own race.

Ohio Highway Patrol
They had a post for decades, and until very recently, on Broadway in Garfield Heights between Whitehouse crossing and East 131st. In fact it still shows on Google Streetview. I seem to remember it making the news that the county or city or cities asked them to move in and help on the freeways.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
There's a lot of structures so decayed they had to be demolished, owned by people waiting for a "fair" price. And some of those owners are now trusts because the person waited themselves into the grave. I'm all for trying to earn a living. But if I did it by sitting on a piece of blight, I would feel ashamed. Maybe I'm not selfish enough to be in business. This is the story in every neighborhood in Cleveland, espeically in places like Ohio City, Tremont and Detroit Shoreway. As soon as things start to pick up you have every other house sitting there falling down, while the owner tries to get $200,000 for a house that might be worth 100K. So to these property owners I say, if you think it's worth it why don't you get an equity loan and at least paint the place? 10 years ago the White Administration went down to Old River Road and started enforcing code with a heavy hand. Club owners couldn't or wouldn't comply, and Wolstein ended up with the property. We need to step up enforcement all around.

Like most governmental agencies, there's been a concerted effort by the OHP to expand their jurisdiction and scope.

Except for major holidays, you never see state troopers in Greater Cleveland. BTW, that video of all the trucks hitting the railroad bridge was shot in Raleigh, NC where stupid drivers must be everywhere! This is no longer true--I see them out just about every weekend. The other day they were in Bratenhal (must have given the local guys the day off--for once!). I've also seen them just south of the 71/90 split off the innerbelt bridge.

Yep. Made complex by watching Cleveland pro sports since the '70s -- the first of four championship-free decades in a row, and still counting. Amen. I used to love going to Tribe games in the mid 1990's surrounded by so-called "superfans" who bought their Omar Visquel Tshirt on the way to the game from a gas station and couldn't name a player pre-1994. Those of us who grew up with Sid Monge and Grover as a player knew the true Cleveland sports!

Time to put Greg Little on the bench and give a young, hungry receiver a chance to earn a spot. He puts the "little" in "little catches..."

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
You mean Matt Zone. Westbrook is retiring and his ward is getting absorbed by Zone's. So Zone's new ward will extend west to West 117th after Jan. 1. Didn't realize that--I thought Dona Brady was getting it--or are they both getting a piece of the ward?

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
I suppose you speak of that setback, largely windowless brick box that's going up. So much of W117 needs to be detonated. Make sure you share your thoughts with Westbrook, Brady and Cudell "Improvement".
