Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
So what? Since when does being a state capital matter? By that logic Albany (yes 2 hrs to NYC, but Austin is 2 hrs to Houston) should have direct flights to Europe. If its not facilitating air service, just what is the core business of Hopkins? I don't think you're comparing fairly. While Albany is the NY state capitol, everything is done in the defacto capitol (of the world) New York City. I'm just theorizing that as the capitol of the 2nd most populous state in the USA, with an economy rooted in the oil business, that perhaps Austin is a desirable business destination for European travelers?

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
What have the Indians marketers been doing to fill seats? This would be a great chance to do some 1/2 off deals etc. Last night's attendance was somewhere around 10,000. Dismal.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
No thanks. End up with some kind of Zimmerman situation where these "neighborhood watch" individuals with no authority took the law in to their own hands I wouldn't insult the Guardian Angels by comparing them to a wanna-be cop idiot looking to make a name for himself. . They have a long history of this service, provide training, action plans, etc. Just their presence could have deterred something like this.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I truly hope its the new immigration facilities and not more runway SHORTENING projects. Little Austin, TX (with an air market much smaller than CLE's) just got a daily nonstop to London on BA, to begin this Spring (and supposedly without subsidies). They just finished new FIS (immigration) facilities at their airport. We need this a new FIS desperately....like NOW, or we will continue to lose out. Apples to oranges. Austin is also the state capitol of one of our largest states. And I'm sure there's lots of oil business happening too. A FIS would be easy with all the open space at Hopkins. I'd rather they focus on the core business. Now how about that $100 million control tower?

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Let's agree that if downtown adds another 4000 residents on the lakefront, that hopefully we would get a grocery store bigger than Constantino's SOMEWHERE downtown. And even then, such a store would probably rely heavily on lunchtime customers eating prepared foods. This is not SIM city. It is Cleveland.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
From the news reports, the bar also looks like an old speakeasy design-wise, with it being very difficult to see in. I can certainly understand why, and they do have cameras outside, but clearly it's not enough. (We very intentionally have a large picture window and good visibility on our parking lot as well.) They probably need some outside security. This is not the best of neighborhoods and like it or not, their clientele are stereotyped as easy victims. these punks need to be sabotaged. Next time there is a late night mob loitering, have bait much like Mr. Fox and when he is approached have a nice infantry of cops/residents come out from the shadows. I advocated something like this for the UC Rapid Station in my "Observer" column at CWRU way back in the last century, so of course I love it. Indeed this would happen, post haste, in Little Italy which is why they avoid it despite proximity to plenty of them. Of course, someone would probably claim entrapment and I doubt Jackson or McGrath has the testicular fortitude to try it. The police were called a few times BEFORE this happened as the mob was wandering the street, and yet it still happened. I'm all for this sort of task-force based solutions to crime, but let's start with the basics!

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I agree. They should locate a film studio in the sea of parking lots between E 13th and E 17th streets, not along the lakefront. There are pre-existing structures on the docks that could easily fit the bill for a studio. Warehouse space with overhead cranes, interesting backdrops, etc.... I can see why it's on the radar....

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
That's what angers me the most--this is an area that 10-15 years ago wasn't so bad, but the city is letting it go. There are small pockets of good happening, so there is plenty of reason to not let these thugs take over Detroit Ave.

Heinous heinous heinous. I hope they find these little fu&%ers! Man Said He Was Attacked ‘Because I Am Gay’ Posted on: 9:21 pm, September 2, 2013, by Emily Valdez CLEVELAND– A mob of young men with their faces covered attacked and beat a man, who is gay, as he walked up to a gay bar on Cleveland’s west side, Saturday night. “I told them I didn’t have anything and they just surrounded me. They were everywhere, and just started beating me,” said Jared Fox, 26, who has a black eye, along with bruises and abrasions all over his head from a brutal beating Saturday about 11 p.m. outside of Cocktails bar, a gay bar on West 93rd Street and Detroit Ave. on Cleveland’s west side. Cleveland police are investigating the beating as a robbery and hate crime. http://fox8.com/2013/09/02/man-said-he-was-attacked-because-i-am-gay/

Why are young people driving less?
Most young people don't want to live in a "carless society". But more people want to live in places where they can walk, bike, or take transit to more places. Some people may choose to live without a car in these places; others will still own cars but use them less. I live in OTR, and I walk to my office, walk to bars and restaurants, and occasionally walk to get groceries. I drive to the gym, to the airport, and for larger grocery shopping trips. I grew up in Clermont County, in an area that was barely suburban, approaching rural. You could not go anywhere or do anything without driving. Many of my friends from my hometown are now living in more urban neighborhoods; for example a few of them moved to Norwood. They still use their cars a lot, but probably drive about 1/2 or 1/3 as much to accomplish the same things (going to a movie, going shopping, etc.). That's why this whole notion of a "War On Cars" is insane. There is no war on cars. Most people still want cars. But most people also want to be able to do certain things without driving at all, or at least without driving very far. I lived in downtown Cleveland in my 20's. I owned a car for the same reasons groceries, airport, etc, but never had to drive to bar hop party, which is what we do when we're in our 20's. I think a lot of the urban hipsters are in these hoods for the same reason. Easy access to bars and restaurants, without having to run the gauntlet of suburban cops on their way home. Also if you think about it they have also lived through a couple of serious oil spikes--so the price of gas is always on their minds, and quite high if adjusted for inflation. I remember putting $5 in my Ford Escort and driving all week. These days that wouldn't last you the day.

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
I'm all for new residential downtown, but this would make a great hotel location as well. And the interior rooms would be an easier sell than an interior facing apartment.

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
Yes but I don't believe I would ever use that number. Cleveland still has a weak core comparatively. Additionally Downtown Cleveland is very isolated from surrounding neighborhoods. Boston for instance has nearly 60,000 residents in downtown adjacent neighborhoods within walking distance, not divided by rivers, highways, industry, or valleys. The number is even greater when you cross those barriers. The population is highly educated, with high income. "Downtown Cleveland" may be close to "Downtown Boston's" population but is meaningless as Boston has the North End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, and other neighborhoods feeding directly into downtown's greater population and activity/business. So goes the story of Cleveland. Islands. Pockets of activity. Is it just geography?

Cleveland: Downtown: Residences at 1717
From what I remember the one time I visited their customer service to pay a bill there, the employees would have a hard time operating an elevator. Advanced math with all those pretty little buttons.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
C'mon now, let the PD circle the drain in peace. They are desperate and need to fan the flames to attract readers who listen to Trivisanno and Rush, then stock up on gold coins from the Franklin Mint to steady their retirement assets. I'm sure the PD's account rep at Reputation Now is about to scrub this post clean.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Was the lack of rail access a part of their decision making process to bring the meeting there? To call attention to the problem we call Ohio?

Cincinnati Lunken Airport
I'm a Cleveland bystander but interested in this thread because I follow the aviation business (and am a fan of Martha Lunken's writings in Flying Magazine!). One thing to not over look is the commercial service will actually help the FBO's service the business community better. There will be a minimal number of flights causing ground traffic, but they are in line to get all the fuel and maintenance work. So someone at LUK will stand to improve their bottom line, and with it the service they can provide their biz jet clients. I'm not sure of the financing at CVG but it would be interesting to hear one of those consultants take on the increased competition in the region. I'm sure there are lots of case studies to contribute, including the competition between CLE and CAK up north here.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Grrr. More fast food to feed the diabetes tidal wave coming to this country. It's already happening in poor neighborhoods like this. But back on topic, it is good to see a structure being built on that spot.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Isn't that the 2.5-mile section described in the second paragraph? I guess so, but I thought this had had been shot down during the ODOT collapse of 2012 (when they announced the second innerbelt bridge wouldn't be completed until our great great grandchildren were driving across it?)

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Interesting timing on this article, but it could just be business press chest-thumping? What is involved in Phase II? Baker Selected for ODOT Lakefront West Phase II Design Contract CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 27, 2013-- Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE MKT:BKR), was awarded a one-year, $4.5 million roadway and structure design services contract by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for Phase II of the Lakefront West project on U.S. Route 6 in Cleveland, Ohio. When completed, the Lakefront West Project will connect Cleveland's west-side neighborhoods with the lakefront by creating multi-modal connections along the West Shoreway. The project transforms a 2.5-mile, 50 mph freeway into a scenic, tree-lined, 35 mph boulevard. Specifically, Baker will provide detailed roadway and structures design, traffic certification and analysis, maintenance of traffic, traffic signal plans, drainage design, utility coordination and documentation, geotechnical review, final waterway permit and conceptual mitigation plan, project management and stakeholder meetings/coordination, landscaping and constructability reviews.
