  1. I'd like to leave Shoreway in the name, to hopefully increase the awareness of the need to convert it to a boulevard and provide lake access. Perhaps a "Gordon Shoreway" mash up?
  2. Wow only 4 years. You would think they are putting a revolving restaurant on top! And $69 million--what a bargain! I would think for that price we could build a 10 story building on the airport property, rent out the bottom 9 stories and give the top to the FAA!
  3. Meanwhile, I thought the Euclid Corridor made perfect sense as a New Urbanist Paradise... but it was decided that our city's main thoroughfare-- Millionaire's Row-- was too far gone for any such thing, so we should be happy to get light manufacturing there... even though we'd just rebuilt the road to feature a block-by-block mass transit system that was clearly designed to service a New Urbanist Paradise. But here... in what has always been the worst part of town, interspersed with heavy industry and logistical infrastructure, soaked through with chemicals... here we should hold out for ideal high-density residential and retail. Amen. There's a little to much Sim-City idealism at work here. While we all debate the merits of this project, let's not forget this is supposed to prop up our new largest industry: healthcare. I'm all for rail and anti-car. But let's face it, if it keeps UC and the Clinic growing, we need to do this. What's most important is that the influx of cars is carefully managed and doesn't overstep the growth in residential and retail in the area also.
  4. Are you f*cking kidding me? You're more educated than that on what is happening not just in University Circle but in downtown, Ohio City, Tremont, Asiatown and Detroit-Shoreway. And this is spreading outward from the core. I would have expected to see that kind of comment on cleveland.com. I think we all agree with you KJP. But this isn't how most MBA corporate finance people think. They are lazy. They go for low hanging fruit. It's easier to tear down a mall (WestGate) and build new (Crocker) in a zip code with better numbers. They don't think big picture, they only see what's on their spreadsheet in front of them. It's easy to pull off when most of those people in the exurbs welcome it with open arms, and are the leading the charge to our American "throw away" Wal Mart society.
  5. So much for "temporary." It will YEARS if there is ever a Phase II. If ever. Now Rock Gaming has a comfortable position when the "casino revenues" are not living up to expectations.
  6. The return of the Kardiac Kids...baseball style!

Gonorrhea and Hipilis? A bad combination....
  8. This is very true. Attendance is a MLB problem, not just Cleveland. Then you have a commissioner coming through substance abuse scandals and bragging about attendance figures being up, fully exposing himself as a 20th century "old guard" thinker. Sports are now built on television and ratings. Hockey has amazing attendance, but still barely makes a dent on the American radar as a fourth sport. The NFL kicks all them to the curb, and it's largely been built on TV deals--not butts in seats.
  9. And unfortunately corrections are buried on page 37 of a news paper, or in ultra-fine print of a web-based "news" source. So the story remains. Nationally people still think the Cuyahoga burns and the Flats are hopping. Life goes on. And meanwhile, every night around the country a similar incident happens with a pro athlete. Wives, girlfriends, baby mamas (or all the above) cause altercations between alpha males out of town and ingesting alcohol. It happens more than you think. I think this is UO putting this under way to powerful of a microscope. As someone in a related business, I have to go with MTS on this one.
  10. I can. In raw numbers, the operating costs for rail are higher because the transit agency is responsible for the right of way while a street is the responsibility of someone else. That's especially true for an electrified rail right of way as there is a lot more to maintain and a lot more labor costs. This is old data, but in the past decade GCRTA's operating cost per vehicle service mile was about $7 for demand response, $8 for regular route bus, $11 for heavy rail (Red Line) and $14 for light rail (Blue/Green/Waterfront Lines). However........ The carrying capacity of rail vehicles is much higher. So while one train operator drives a vehicle that carries up to several hundred people, a regular route bus has one driver for perhaps 20-50 people. A demand response (paratransit) bus may carry one or two passengers. The travel industry standard for measuring usage is the passenger-mile, so costs are spread among more passenger miles with greater usage. For heavy rail (Red Line), GCRTA's cost per passenger-mile is 42 cents, for light rail (Blue/Green/Waterfront lines), its 72 cents. For regular route bus, its 92 cents. And for demand response, it's $8.68! There is also another way to measure operating costs per boardings, called an unlinked passenger trip in transit-planner-speak. GCRTA's operating cost per unlinked passenger trip was $3.18 for heavy rail, $3.48 for regular route bus, $4.26 for light rail, and $47.20 for demand response. KJP this is great, but can you provide more specific data. ;)
  11. Since he wasn't robbed, you have to think this is some drunk little Tribe fan punks?
  12. And that's how you know there isn't many rooms for the general public. $479 on hotels.com. A good thing mind you, I love seeing expensive Cleveland hotels!
  13. I agree. Necessary (evil) component is a good way of putting it. Cleveland will never be Chicago or NYC when it comes to density. But we can effectively manage what we have to make it a good compromise for those who want to live and work in the neighborhood.
  14. Its real fun for them when they come upon "PC." Sadly many find the slightest little reasons to find probable cause....
  15. There is are 2 major hospitals on the opposite ends of 25th. This happens in any major metro where growth happens around hospitals. As long as the bar revelers aren't parking in the streets and blocking traffic around 2 am, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
  16. Then University Circle needs to show some foresight and leadership and make sure they have a plan for this growth. They're not going to stop people from Avon Lake or Brecksville from driving to their jobs at UH or the Clinic. But UC and Urban Ohio's lobbying arm CAN make a difference in making sure the cars are integrated into a high-density neighborhood, including parking decks that feature street-level retail, added residential, etc.
  17. I've seen quite a few interesting buildings in the south over the last decade. Dallas, Miami and Charlotte all come to mind. I'd be more skeptical of our leadership than this firm.
  18. I always here people on this forum say the reason Cleveland apartments don't have balconies is because of wind. Wouldn't that make this idea somewhat risky?

I've been pre approved for it, but they've never sent me the official invite! if they don't want my money its on them. I'm good with my Platinum. I figured you would have the platinum. The wife actually has the option to upgrade her work AMEX to platinum and would have in a heartbeat if it included access to United Lounges. Alas, it does not, but seems to include access to every other lounge on every other carrier. Just another way that United is trying to nickle and dime you. I wonder if there is a specific hipster credit card. One that gives additional points for shopping at goodwill and vintage record stores. Or if you instagram your purchase. I'm with your wife. Well, figuratively! I would upgrade to platinum in a heartbeat if they included United lounges. Everytime they call me I interrupt the sale pitch to ask, "have you added United lounge access yet?"

The "I'll show me" way of operating government. Kasich should note that he didn't save any money, he only allowed it to be spent elsewhere.
  21. Next year at this time I hope your opinion of Clifton improves.
  22. Cleveland: Kasich delivering highway project $$$ Tom Beres CLEVELAND -- On Monday, Governor John Kasich is expected to deliver some good news and significant dollars for multiple transportation projects in Greater Cleveland, starting with the Opportunity Corridor. The $324 million project would link I-490 with University Circle by a 3.5-mile link through Cleveland's East Side neighborhoods. http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/307128/3/Cleveland-Kasich-delivering-highway-project-
  23. I noticed the Palazzo is up for sale. Sign says "own a Cleveland Landmark" (or something to that effect).
  24. For the kids participating in these kinds of activities, a jail sentence is a badge of honor. I don't think they think that far into the future where a sentencing is considered in their planning.
  25. No it does not. I was on hand at the public meetings and the reason given was the lack of lane width since it is a federally mandated highway. A suggestion to make one side of the sidewalk on Clifton extra wide to include a bike lane was taken for consideration, but I'm not sure it ever went anywhere.
