  1. Those are really cool! Where are you getting them from? Would love to browse more!
  2. What promoter passed on CBS because the lack of a roof? There are probably a lot of other factors too. Like a tough rent deal and simply awful and expensive stagehands in a market that is not what it once was. I just checked Pollstar to compare CBS with Ford Field, Heinz Field and Lucas Oil Stadium. Over the past several years traffic in Ford, Lucas and Heinz were nearly the same (Ford scored a couple more shows due to Kid Rock's affliction to play home-town events). Ford also had a Taylor Swift, but that is just taking business from other venues as she was playing arenas on that tour and probably would have played 2 Joe Louis or Palace dates. Both Ford and Lucas oil notched extra events as well with the Super Bowl. No arguing that would do us some good. It is also interesting to note that promoters have passed on Cleveland for the Kenny Chesney summer outing far more than any of the other venues (and yes, Pittsburgh with its open air configuration hosted just as many as Detroit or Indy). So in summary, if we are talking typical outdoor music event promoters (as the posts on World Series of Rock and other concerts suggests), I don't see a huge disadvantage in having an open air facility, unless you are willing to pit the venues against each other and take business from the Q. If you add in some of the subcategories of events like monster truck pulls and motocross well then you might further that argument, but those don't draw much in rent or attendees either.
  3. I'm intimately involved with the industry. You can say it's my life. Tickets are sold in advance. Usually 6-12 months ahead of the date. Weather is a small factor in producing a stadium tour but it's impossible to predict. And only the worst of worst of weather (lighting/wind) will actually cancel a date. The artist doesn't care if the fans get wet!!! They stay nice and dry under the roof or in their dressing rooms! Think I'm wrong? Here's a quiz for you: 1. Name the top grossing tour of the last decade. 2. How many of said tours' dates were played indoors (here's a hint--it's a handful) 3. Can you name a recent stadium show cancelled due to weather? 4. What was the last stadium tour you saw routed in the winter in North America? But this thread isn't about producing stadium shows. It's about a roof on CBS. IMO any roof added would not attract enough events to warrant the cost. We'd be better off adding on a "field house" type space next to it to compliment the convention center.
  4. Not at all true. There are just not enough bands to fill stadiums anymore. Those days are gone. Weather has little to nothing to do with it--in fact most bands would rather play an open air stadium due to superior sound quality.
  5. Good analysis Hts. What are you doing for the next 9 or 10 weekends this year?
  6. I always think of Yuengling as more a Philly beer--it comes from the eastern part of the state. Now if that was an Iron City wrap, them would be fighting words!
  7. I hope its a part of the driver training how to defuse and avoid these situations. They should also have a little button they can push that automatically sends the transit cops without saying a word. That's what I would have done with that woman---had a couple squad cars meet her at the next stop! It is sad that "ghetto bravado" has become such a part of our culture in both males and females. Honestly I still can't believe he hit a woman--it would take much more than being spit on for me to consider. I'd have to be defending my life. I would have been content to see her go to jail.
  8. Definitely not the case. I'm in hotels 200+ nights a year and I can tell you there may be a couple with dog-dedicated rooms but most have none. If they do have rules they don't enforce or look the other way. I also think they should be banned from planes. For someone with severe allergies the last thing you want is an animal sitting next to you for a 5 hour flight in an enclosed space.
  9. Uhhh...I've been there twice in the past 30 days and walked around the monstrous construction site. Right next to Bridgestone Arena. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_City_Center
  10. ^^ Pet peeve of mine as someone who is deathly allergic to most dogs. I personally have nothing against dogs and think they are wonderful creatures, but ever since Paris Hilton took to carrying a Chihuahua to nightclubs and Starbucks it seems some people just can't leave their pets at home. There should be dog-only rooms just like their used to be smoking rooms. In fact, I can usually tell within minutes of entering a hotel room when there has been a dog recently in the room (hives, itching). Rant over--back to the topic and good news of Embassy Suites going back to residential!
  11. They were both in the wrong. She should be arrested and he should be fired. Wonder what the ATU defense of him will be. Honestly though, sometimes when I ride I don't know how this doesn't happen more often.
  12. Nashville IS building a world-class convention center. So we will still be competing with them for that business.
  13. I had similar information from a friend that spoke with Jay Westbrook but have not seen anything official either online or on paper.
  14. Embassy Suites were just that. Suites. Some were rather large ones (I have had 2 bedroom suites there during stays for work trips). They were once apartments many moons ago, and now they shall return to their intended purpose.
  15. Removal of the bridge is relevant when talking about declining highway revenues. Obviously it would be way off in the future, but conversion of the existing stretch from 25th to Clifton now would pave the way (pun intended) for future changes when the bridge is in danger of collapsing. BTW, the funny thing about the entire Shoreway as a commuter freeway argument to me is 99% of the commuters use Clifton and Lake Ave to get to that point for at least some distance. They have no problem using surface streets until that point, so how would an additional couple miles of surface streets really affect their lives? Especially if a portion of the budget was put into properly timing and aligning traffic signals.
  16. And Peabody's is much better than the old Rascal House, which always reminded me of a tired and despair-filled airport hotel bar....
  17. For $40 million I would think they could redo most of the Shoreway with the median and intersections AND put a pedestrian/bike bridge OVER the tracks for the residents!
  18. I had no idea--I thought it was the start of an intersection in the making. Is there an overview of the project anywhere?
  19. You do. It's called Kent State. ;) FWIW, I like all the stuff going on at CSU, too. It's a terrific economic engine for downtown. And their's no economic engine quite like Division I football ;). Let's face it, light towers and academics are great--but they don't attract frat boys and their mom's bank accounts ;)
  20. Same news today on Cleveland.com. Will be good to see the comments on that story! ;) http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/odot_promises_12_million_to_la.html
  21. Old news. They have the funding to proceed...... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,4446.msg631964.html#msg631964 Yes I guess I didn't tie it together--RTA funding is set--the city needs to seek the funding for the actual street and sidewalks, then they can get started. This, in my mind, is a absolute travesty given the condition of the road and it's status as a major commuter thoroughfare. It should be repaired no matter what beautification happens.
  22. Having done quite a few trips on Acela and LOTS of trip in Europe, yes the cars seemed old. It could also have been the lack of air conditioning, internet, and the fact that the train died at one stop losing power for 45 minutes! The only thing I felt was missing was 500 farm workers sitting on the roof and perhaps some sheep and goats wandering the aisles! ;)
  23. I was also told by a friend that Jay Westbrook told him that RTA had secured funding for the Clifton waiting environment upgrades. There is due to be a public meeting on the status of funding for road reconstruction in October. Could be some good things happening on the near west side in the next couple years.
  24. I've taken that route before and its already in dire need of funding. Extremely old train that was hot, uncomfortable, outdated and even broke down at a station where we were stuck for 45 minutes. That trip was a poignant reminder of just how far behind the rest of the world we are when it comes to modern rail transport.
  25. I'd say unless we have a GUARANTEE for one of the marquee events (NCAA, Superbowl or Political Convention) the cost of adding a cover would not return it's investment (much like Detroit did when Ford Field opened). The size and scale of a stadium is not conducive for indoor events anyway. If you look at the calendars of the other indoor NFL facilities in the region, you'll see weddings, bar mitzvahs and corporate parties in the smaller party function rooms. CBS already gets this business.
