In the presentation the city never really lays out what it would cost to rehab and put the bridge back into service vs demolition and constructing a similar structure in it's place. There is a figure of $58 million to reconstruct everything including the viaduct, but is the viaduct really even necessary? The City of Cleveland can be woefully myopic. Within 10 years Scranton will likely be a bustling residential, restaurant and recreation area. There will need to be vehicle access to downtown.

I might be crazy, but wasn't E 9th once named "Rock N Roll Blvd"? I swear I remember seeing the signs.

The river is dredged to 29' and it's not all that wide, so that would be a helluva short/deep tunnel! One would assume they would have to build it at least 20-25' below the river bed?

Yet in countries around the world I travel in these insane, massive tunnels. The one in Brisbane is crazy it's like 5 miles long and designed to take commuter traffic into the CBD off city streets. If only bridges and tunnels made our American oligarchs money like defense spending! Rant over...back to the Scranton!

Does it really take a month to replace a couple miles of track? Are they doing it by hand?

I don't see any scenario in the city of Cleveland where a pedestrian only bridge with the necessary 100' vertical clearance, or moveable with a 24/7 operator, is built. Plus in this case it doesn't make sense. Scranton is likely going to be booming in 10 years. It will need the additional vehicle access.

Not only trucks, but hundreds of 10 axle semi dump trucks that use that bridge every day. The DS bridge and Huron road structure above Tower City take a beating!

Hard to say. I did some googling as well. The current bridge was built in 1931, and most recently renovated in 1991. These things were built to stand the test of time. It may be salvageable, especially since it hasn't had the ravages of road salt for the past 20 years. Also, most of these lift bridges use the counterweights to lift the bridge. The electric motors actually pull the weights down to lower the span. I wouldn't be surprised if the motors are still intact that they don't still work. It may take some re-cabling etc to bring it into safety compliance. Certainly worth an effort to try to save this historic structure. EDIT: I just watched the city presentation video and it appears the structure is much worse than I hoped. I would still vote to save it though. These things get done in Europe. Not so much here.

This doesn't happen if you're doing 35 MPH. The guy was probably doing 70, as I see people doing all the time. This tree was lucky. I'm not in construction, but I would bet those are pretty easy to duplicate with more modern and energy efficient materials, without altering the look.

I don't know how many times I've posted that CPP streetlight outage link on our neighborhood facebook group. Almost as many times as I've posted the city of Cleveland waste collection schedule. There will still be people who's only reaction is to complain about something on Facebook.

In defense of Frank Jackson, there was actually this system in place on the website. Granted, it felt like 1999 and you should be filing your report via your AOL dial up account, but it was there. The Bibb administration removed it but hopefully they are moving to a more app or social based reporting system. And, as @mack34said above, the 311 phone line is still very much active.

Or we could do the math. One shooting in Crocker Park with it's, what, 200 residents vs nearly 400,000 in Cleveland. I saw that Westlake is also banning cruising at Crocker Park. Things must be getting scary on Friday and Saturday nights.

I don't disagree. But until then, it's quite easy to report these problems. Too many people just want to shout into the ether on Facebook etc instead of being proactive and doing something about it.

Chances are no one has alerted either CPP or the city about them. Why city department employees (like CPD or CFD) can't report these is beyond me. But in my neighborhood people will complain about a streetlight for 2 weeks on Facebook. I'll go on the CPP site, report it, and it will be fixed within a week. Yes, along with corporate owned trucks, rental truck fleets, etc. One way to implement GPS would be to impose a limit in geographic areas where safety restrictions are needed, ie high density urban areas, school zones, etc. Americans could (and should IMO) be free to exercise their "good" judgement in outlying areas on interstates where they are must less likely to encounter intersections, pedestrians and other hazards.

Hopefully that guy isn't back on the streets in a week. The media should be tracking this case to see what the judge does during sentencing.
