The first thing that will happen: Raises for all city employees. The second thing that will happen: All departments will hire more employees. I wish I was kidding...

Don't worry. Trump has negotiated a big beautiful deal with Mexico to stop these kinds of things from happening....

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I know it might be shocking, but the FAA moves at the speed of molasses. So yes, someday drones will operate in close company with manned aircraft. But for the time being (and for some good reason--mainly communications guarantees), drones and manned aircraft don't play closely.

Yes totally. Fuel and maintenance costs are not cheap!

It would be cheaper. However there would be some hurdles with operating drones in the CLE Class B airspace as well as the BKL Class D airspace that extends to the surface in various parts of the city. Not impossible, but requires prior authorization and planning with the FAA, which is not ideal for sudden car chases. A manned helicopter can just call up and request clearance into the airspace, then stay in contact with ATC while the chase is going on. With this being said, we already own 2 helicopters and pay pilots--they just rarely get used. Having routine patrols would put the criminals on notice that they can't escape observation from overhead during a chase into Cleveland.

Likewise. And since I own multi-families, I also carry an umbrella policy on top of my homeowners.

Cross posted from the suburban crime thread. Cleveland Police have 2 helicopters in their aviation unit that barely ever fly. I would like to see more money directed their way to enable them to get eyes in the sky more often, which would definitely help avoid high speed chases if being tracked from the air. Maybe some of the new Federal money from the stimulus bill can be put to this effort.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
These kinds of stats always mystify me. We always think of Europe as a place with a huge amount of government oversight especially when it comes to health, safety, etc. How is it possible that our costs are so much higher here?

What if there is a history of accidents at this location and the city has done nothing about it? I haven't met a lawyer who doesn't love negligence! 😜

Hopefully the Kevin Kelly/Council presser last weekend will cause some change to allow some chases from CPD in the near future.

Unfortunately it will come down to what the Feds dictate it can be spent on. I'm sure a bunch will go towards raises for city employees and hiring even more.

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
I see your point and agree. I wasn't thinking that RTA run the trains, rather just share their tracks. It could be a private contractor.

You know you're right. I believe it just winters inside the harbor.

I wonder how long the Goodtime will last inside the bridge? The first time the bridge gets stuck down on a Saturday morning and the city won't show up until lunchtime on Monday to fix it, they may not want to risk cancelling any further sailings. File under "I hope I'm wrong..."

But people will be ok with vans and buses loaded with prisoners trekking down their beloved highways? The dedicated train idea seems way more sanitized, and could come with considerable money for the RTA rail system maintenance. Win-win.

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
I can't remember which forum I mentioned it in, but because of the prisoner transport, I like the idea of the Justice Center on the river view site, with direct rail connections to the court tower from a jail site on the east side. This would provide very secure and reliable prisoner transport while injecting money into RTA's rail budget (helping save it for the rest of us).
