Dubai: Developments and News
By the way, has anyone ever seen this nutty azz concept of Dubai Towers? I wonder if these things could even stand??

Dubai: Developments and News
It's a typo...more like 220. Dubai currently has about 300 or so completed skyscrapers and about 600 in construction/proposed/approved status.

^---Yea, but unlike Hong Kong, half of Dubai's buildings will be vacant 20 years from now.

^---that's more for tourism though, isn't it? I can't see a 10,000 populated town being congested enough to need a light rail. What is the number of tourists they get per year?

^---She's referring to the Kettering Tower which was originally named Winters Bank...that black monstrosity international style box that Dayton likes to call it's tallest

^--- A good example is Phoenix. Until 3 years ago, they were the largest city in the world without a rail system. Even with Phoenix as spread out as it is, they understood bus transportation alone was not enough, hence the creation of the Valley Metro Light Rail, which actually doesn't open until late 2008, so technically it is still the largest city without a functional rail system. All cities that have more than a 500,000 (edited: I originally said 1 mill which is probably too high) in the metro area can benefit from rail...heck, even Dayton, which hopefully we will be getting the streetcar line soon.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. :wink2:

The CInci voters voted down light rail and I think if this went before the voters, it would be a mistake. Let the city decide what to do with it and keep the voters out unless it required a chunk of tax change.

Dayton: General Business & Economic News
Dayton really needs to build some high class business parks outside of downtown to woo companies such as this in their borders. Not all companies want to be directly in downtown.

Well, a little better news for Trotwood... Trotwood auto center to re-open By Tim Tresslar Staff Writer Friday, January 04, 2008 TROTWOOD — The Precision Tune Auto Care here will re-open Monday after being closed for several months, company officials said. The 5128 Salem Ave. facility will employ two managers and two technicians, said Liz McGee, co-manager. RPM Solutions, owner of the local Precision Tune franchise, previously operated a store at the same location between January 2006 and August 2007, McGee said. The store was closed because of a slow economy. Afterwards, another automotive service center occupied the location but closed in October. Hours for the Salem Avenue location will be 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Puncer, whose work is also at the Town & Country Fine Art Center, moved her operations from Cannery Art & Design Center to 510 E. 5th St. in what was the former Dolcessa gelato shop. Dolcessa closed Nov. 30 and will reopen early this year on Brown Street, near the University of Dayton campus, owner Jules Opperman said in mid-November. Gallery 510 also will be part of the Oregon Historic District's monthly "First Friday" events, Puncer said. What's your favorite building in Downtown Dayton?
Centre City by far. Inkaelin is right that it is unique, but not only it's looks, but in the way it was constructed. The top section and northern section were built many years after the original building then known as the United Brethren Building, giving it it's unique look. Also if you never had the chance to see it with it's copper roof shiny and not tarnished, it was extremely beautiful. The United Brethren Building was completed in 1904 at 14 stories. In 1927, two other towers were added. Emporis states that it was Dayton's tallest building from 1904 until 1931, but I highly dispute this fact as I feel that Centre City is taller than Liberty Tower. I also dispute the steel construction of the tower since the construction pictures inside the tower show the frame construction as wood and concrete. Also, Requarth's website states they provided construction and materials for the United Brethren building which further confirms my beliefs. Here is United Brethren before the additions... and after... You gotta love this building.

The Section 8 Issue comes to Dayton.
i live almost at the corner of Dorothy and Shroyer. I have noticed Oakwood patrolling more, but I'm not so sure Kettering has stepped up any? I don't see them anymore than I did before.

The Section 8 Issue comes to Dayton.
I have personal experience with Section 8 housing. When I lived in Kentucky for 5 years, I lived in 3 different neighborhoods. Two of them I had no problems. The third and last neighborhood, I had multiple problems as did some of my neighbors. Guess what was across the street? Section 8 apartments. Now I have been living back up here in Dayton now for the last 5 years and guess where? Two blocks away from the area of Shroyer where these new Section 8 apartments are. For the last 4 years, I have not had any fear or problems...until now. I am seeing all kinds of issues around here. Car break ins, graffiti, broke down cars sitting on the road that never get fixed, thugs just walking around the streets with obviously nothing to do, and every time I pull into the new Speedway gas station around the corner, I feel like someone is going to harass me. It's very simple. Low income people are more likely to steal or commit a crime. Now I'm not talking like low income if you are in college and working at McDonald's, but low income as in you have you are on unemployment half your life, a dead beat that doesn't want to pay bills or work or a drug user that works a part time job just to make enough to get a fix. These are real issues with Section 8 residents. Parkside was about as bad as it got for the City of Dayton and some of these residents got pushed into areas that are much wealthier...and no one expects a problem? Yes, there are some Section 8 people that are ok. But that ratio is lower.

Cloverfield: 1-18-08
Awww, I was hoping to draw posters into this thread by keeping it a mystery like the marketing :-P Oh, and btw, if you like Star trek, there will be a teaser trailer before Coverfield for Star Trek 11. Word is on the street, it's pretty intense. More reason to go see Cloverfield...I'm such a dork

Cloverfield: 1-18-08
Ugh...sorry guys, it won't be Godzilla, Paramount does not own the rights to Godzilla and neither does Sony anymore. Toho owns the Godzilla franchise and after the utter destruction of Godzilla in the American version, don't expect Toho to let us use the Godzilla rights any time soon. Also, it's not a "mutant whale" and it's not "Cthulhu" just to clear things up. All these have already been dismissed by J.J. Abrams (producer) and Bryan Burke (produer) in multiple interviews. It will be something original that no one has seen before. :-D

I've been attacked on the RTA in Dayton twice and shown a gun when I was sitting on there by myself a third time. After the gun incident. I have since banned all public bus riding for myself. So yes, it does happen.

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
Ok, get rid of the Kroger signs and I agree this would probably be better in Cincinnati which is much more compact and walkable than Columbus, but overall I still think it is a pretty good project for the city.

Cloverfield: 1-18-08
I was wondering if anyone here is keeping up on the upcoming movie "Cloverfield" and the mass marketing campaign they have been doing based around Viral videos and Alternate Reality Gaming? Well, if you know nothing about Cloverfield, it is basically a giant monster takes on Manhattan filmed in the Blair Witch style type of movie. However, that's about all anyone knows about this movie. It has been very hush hush and everything thus far has been based on fan speculation and clues from fictional websites. Even what the monster looks like or where it comes from is still not known. Here is a quick trailer for the movie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufYF0f-zMgY&rel=1 To date, no one really knows what the monster looks like or what the story really is about which is an INCREDIBLE feat for a movie from Hollywood these days to keep things secret this close to opening day. There are many websites that are linked to Cloverfield that give clues about the movie. These websites are... www.1-18-08.com http://tagruato.jp http://tidowave.com/ http://slusho.jp http://jamieandteddy.com/ (password to access this site is : jllovesth) In addition to those, there are several fictional MySpace pages based around the central characters. http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins http://www.myspace.com/jamielascano http://www.myspace.com/beth_mcintyre http://www.myspace.com/lily_ford This definitely has made this movie that more interesting to watch and when it comes out, and even if it really sucks, it already has given me more entertainment than any movie has in years. Are we seeing the next generation of Hollywood Blockbuster promotional marketing?

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
^----Is New York, Chicago or LA the only cities that get to have any fun with their town? Honestly, half of the Columbus population will probably never set foot in the the big apple in their lifetime, so let them dream. This is akin to Dayton and their "tallest hotel proposal, let the smaller cities dream big for a change I say. ;-)
