  1. 'authentic' chili restaurant to debut on lorain avenue Thursday, March 24, 2011 Source: Ian P.E. Writer: Lee Chilcote Palookaville Chili, a new restaurant set to open next month in Ohio City, is seeking to reeducate your taste buds. Owner and budding chef Ian P.E., who says he makes "a mean pot of chili," offers a blunt description of what will set his place apart. "This is gourmet chili, not the slop you'll find at most places," boasts P.E., who lived in San Francisco before returning to Cleveland in 2007. "Most chili is tomato-based and uses ground beef and cinnamon, whereas our beef is cubed, and we use cumin, green chili and poblano peppers. It's based off classic Southwestern cuisine and pretty spicy." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/palookavillechili032411.aspx
  2. PLUSQUELLIC TURNS FIRST SHOVEL ON AUTOMOTIVE MFG OPERATION German Company Brings 123 New Jobs Published: Monday, March 21, 2011 Röchling Automotive USA plans to be in its $25 million, 75,000 square foot facility to be built in the Massillon Road Industrial Park by October. http://ci.akron.oh.us/news_releases/Display.asp?RecNum=348
  3. A bench is not designed to be a sleeping apparatus. Parks space in urban areas is very valuable amenity to downtown living, no matter where it is located. I would guess there are a few bums that sleep in Central Park, but, as far as I know, there are no plans to close it.
  4. Nice little vid from Cleveland Institute of Art on BSpot
  5. Not yet, they are just opening. As more people continue to move downtown, there will be a better market for competition.
  6. Was looking over someone's shoulder at a coffee shop and saw this in Crain's, don't have access though: Miami-style club, upscale restaurants on tap for Flats East Bank http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110314/SUB1/303149982/1053/TOC&Profile=1053
  7. CITY, BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE WESTERN RESERVE ANNOUNCE NEW CLUB SITE Set to Begin Construction at Akron's Joy Park Published: Monday, March 14, 2011 The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve are announcing the site of their newest Clubhouse with Akron Mayor Donald Plusquellic and teen representatives of current Boys & Girls Club members on Monday, March 14 at 10:00 AM. The new Club site will be located in the Joy Park Community Center, 825 Fuller Street, Akron and is the result of a lead gift from the LeBron James Family Foundation and a partnership with the City of Akron. http://ci.akron.oh.us/news_releases/Display.asp?RecNum=343
  8. Wow, that's good news that a bigger office building will occupy the site. Too bad they have to tear that down thought b/c it is a interesting design. The shape doesn't work well for any type of retrofit. A restaurant had recently looked at going in there, but the shape made it difficult to get a feasible layout. Housing agency invests in going green AMHA to add wind turbine, solar panels to buildings By Bob Downing Beacon Journal staff writer Wind and the sun soon will be helping to power Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority buildings. In June, the agency will install its first renewable-energy project: a rooftop wind turbine at the Saferstein Towers II off Diagonal Road in southwest Akron, said agency Executive Director Anthony O'Leary and Ron Rychel, project manager for Ameresco Inc., the firm managing the project. http://www.ohio.com/news/117891494.html
  9. /\/\/\ You're right. A little money spent on good branding goes a long way. Food looks good. Marlin Kaplan Latest Big-Name Chef to Hit W. 25th Posted by Douglas Trattner on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 9:01 AM Look for another huge name in Cleveland dining to crash the W. 25th Street party. Marlin Kaplan is teaming up with Garage Bar owners Jeff Allison and Adam Waldbaum to rebrand Dragonfly (1865 W. 25th St., 216-696-7774, www.dragonflycleveland.com) as a "nouvelle American/Asian-fusion restaurant." Following a brief closer this month, the dewy new Dragonfly will emerge the first week of April. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/03/14/marlin-kaplan-latest-big-name-chef-to-hit-w-25th
  10. SoHo Coming to Ohio City Posted by Douglas Trattner on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 11:26 AM Last week, chef Nolan Konkoski signed a lease to take over the former Lelolai Bakery space on W. 25th, which recently closed after exactly 10 years. By late summer, he and his partner Molly Smith will open SoHo Kitchen and Bar, the "SoHo" being short for Southern Hospitality. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/03/10/soho-coming-to-ohio-city
  11. The announced that ZAR would be going into 22 Ex. in the same press release as 401 Lofts. Its the same owner as LUX. I would assume that LUX would close. It also says that it is going to be a 2-story club. I don't see how that's possible though. It looks like there are occupied apartments on the 2nd floor on the corner and it wasn't built with a basement. Maybe somebody knows something I don't know.
  12. antenna mag devours cle’s current crop of food trucks Thursday, March 10, 2011 Seti's Polish Boys, in business since 2001, was another Antenna favorite. "You could say that Seti's Polish Boys is kind of the original gangsta of food trucks." The sausage sandwiches are topped with French fries, coleslaw and barbeque sauce. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/antennamag031011.aspx
  13. Development News long-abandoned ohio city tavern converted to fresh new housing Thursday, March 10, 2011 James DeRosa purchased the old Marshall McCarron's bar at Randall and John Avenue in Ohio City with dreams of reviving it as a hip restaurant. Then, in 2008, the economy did a spectacular nosedive. Unable to get a loan to make even basic repairs on the dilapidated property, DeRosa and his partners put their dreams on hold. A mounting list of code violations soon landed them in housing court. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/jamesderosa031011.aspx
  14. It's supposed to be more complimentary to the AES building across the street. I think the design is better than the 22 Exchange building. Can't really tell what's going on with that building.
  15. I don't think it's dead. Around the time that the Northside hotel was announced I had asked around a little about the site you are referring to. I heard that they were still trying to find someone for that site. I think the Northside hotel was not something that the city necessarily sought out, but more the developer did.
  16. HAH! Personally, I don't think its design is going to be featured on Arch Daily or Arch Record or such, but I feel that it will be a good space and I don't think they did anything wrong, per se.. just nothing extraordinary. It could be on ArchDaily. For the most part, all you have to do is submit the project with photos by a good photographer. I have gone through it once and it's pretty painless. I could also see it getting some national acclaim as a follow-up project for LMN. Follo-up to the much hyped Vancouver Convo Center. And unfortunately Im not so sure they got the convention certer, right since its lacks the exhibit space that will allow it to host some of the bigger shows that used to be downtown, or ones that are at the IX center now.... They went for more meeting rooms instead (catering too much to the MM, and not much beyond), which yeah, if the MM doesnt last here, then it is kinda screwed for other big shows. For the MM, I think the room/office layout was more what they were going for. At least the very early ideas for it eluded to this. It was supposed to have permanent exhibit and offices spaces for different suppliers and manufacturers. That way it could be up all year round and people could come at any time to view the products and meet with vendors. Maybe that idea has been modified though.
  17. It's starting to grow on me as well. I don't think many people knew the panels were textured. Not sure how I fell about that yet. I think a smooth surfaced panel would have fit in better with the historical context, give it more of a stone feel. Says there are going to be precast concrete.
  18. Maybe that's where Dim Sum is going? Anyone know what area they decided to locate to?
  19. If you go on their website: http://www.csuohio.edu/offices/architect/ They have what they call the "2010 CSU Master Plan PPT". It's a PowerPoint of what has been done and what is coming up. I belive some of the slides encapsulate the work you are asking about. It's in the green bar on the right.
  20. Canton Chop House closes in Jackson Twp. Name change, revised menu couldn't revive eatery. Aladdin's restaurant will open new location in Bath By Lisa Abraham Beacon Journal food writer Published on Wednesday, Jan 12, 2011 The eatery, which opened in September 2006, was trying to revive itself in the past few months when it changed its name from the Big City Chophouse, and brought in chef Adam Smith to help spruce up the menu. It closed as of Jan. 3. On the opening side, look for an Aladdin's restaurant to open soon at 3895 Medina Road, Bath. No word yet from company officials on an official opening date. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/food_notes/113345059.html The new Aladdin's is in the TJ Maxx strip center, next to the Panera, oh and I went by yesterday and it's open. The smell coming from it had me salivating. Great food
  21. Paolo's, new restaurant in the former Whiskey Dick's location. Same building as LUX and Bricco. Thie video says it should be open in the next week or so. I think it says "casual fine dining" or something, but I heard it's going to be more like a pizza and wine bar. Doesn't look like they did much to the interior. It is a decent space already, but sometimes people need a fresh look to make them forget what was there before. What was there before was a bar that became notorious for a fight with 3 baseball players, two of the Akron Aeros at the time. http://ht.ly/42Jr5
  22. cle chefs fare well in early beard nods Thursday, February 24, 2011 Michael Symon racked up nominations in the the big-time categories of Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Restaurant (Lola). Jonathon Sawyer from Greenhouse Tavern is in the running for the much-coveted Rising Star Chef. Both Zack Bruell (Parallax, L'Albatros) and Eric Williams (Momocho) are in the running for Best Chef: Great Lakes Region. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/beardnoms022411.aspx clevelanders officially have gone loco for taco tuesday Lizzy Caston Thursday, February 24, 2011 To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld: "Taco Tuesdays -- what's up with that?" Seems that all across this great city, barflies are bellying up to the counter for bottomless plates of dirt-cheap tacos. The rationale behind the trend is simple enough -- offer deeply discounted tacos to hungry diners in hopes of upping business on a traditionally slow weeknight. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/tacotuesday022411.aspx some of those look really good
  23. Yea, I saw that. I think they stated it like that to make them seem cheap. They did the same thing when Spicer Village went to rentals. The thing is, with the way the apts. there are set up now, you do actually rent the bedroom. Each bedroom has its own key and bathroom. So you could live with people you don't know and still feel safe. $1400/month is still too much for me, but I would think maybe some of the young lawyers and doctors downtown could afford it. The places you mentioned cover the housing downtown. I haven't heard great things about Canal Square, just b/c its getting old at this point. If they ever get funding in place, there will be yp housing at the Landmark Building on Lock 4. Everything is ready to go from the City's side, the owners just need to get more funding. Also, there are rumblings of something going on with the Mayflower. That would be years away though before anything got moving, just rumors now.
  24. Housing near UA may grow Developer says Akron complex would provide 'upscale' units By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer More housing soon might be built in downtown Akron. The same developer behind a student housing and retail complex at South Main and Exchange streets wants to build a $12 million apartment complex on the site of the former Parrish McIntyre tire store at Main and Cedar streets. The apartments would be targeted to University of Akron students and downtown workers. http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/116798493.html
  25. I'm really interested to see what the price point for the non-student housing will be. Downtown desperately needs some housing for young professionals that is affordable.
