Akron: Downtown Hotels
Obviously the City has no idea what a successful hotel entails. Its more than just a name. They want to get more people from out of town to come to the convention center. Most people from out of town do not drive, they fly. How are they going to walk anywhere from that location? Good for Luigi's and Vegi T, I guess.

Great to hear about the jobs and construction, now onto the site and Architecture. Case hasn't developed a feel to their "campus", imo. Obviously PBL was going to use Gehry, and with the donation of a building I don't see how Case could argue. After seeing the "village" renderings years ago, I didn't leave me too enthusiastic and neither does the new rendering. All of the other buildings around the new Student Center site are pretty substantial in design in their own right, even the Institute of Art, again imo. I will reserve judgment until a design is released, but I have set my hopes low in anticipation.- Kent / Kent State University: Development and News

/\/\/\ As far as the law suit, it probably does deserve to be in the city discussion, but I found it funny that the two articles were released so close in time to each other. One in praise of the new facility then the other with some pretty staunch accusations. As far as the price of the hospice, I can understand the cost. They probably have some public spaces, lots of medical equipment, cost of land, etc... I am just puzzled why we continue to build all this crap that looks the same at such an exorbitant cost. Pretty soon NE Ohio is going to look like a model train set. Look at what Richard Rodgers did in the same type of setting recently: http://www.richardrogers.co.uk/work/selected_works/maggie_s_centre/completed It has received some of the highest acclaim that the Architecture and Healthcare realm have to offer.- Akron: Random Development and News
Aultman breaks ground on hospice $5.9 million, 12-bed facility to offer end-of-life care in home-like setting By Cheryl Powell Beacon Journal medical writer The 20,000-square-foot, 12-bed hospice will offer end-of-life care in a setting ''more analogous to what would be going on at home,'' said Dr. Steven David Grossman, medical director of Aultman Hospice and Palliative Care Services. http://www.ohio.com/news/94995314.html Mercy calls Aultman's tactics 'corrupt' CEO Cecconi contends that secret 'bribes' to insurance brokers harmed hospital financially By Cheryl Powell Beacon Journal medical writer http://www.ohio.com/news/94994899.html I'm no math wiz, but $5.9 million for 12 beds seems like a bit much.- Cleveland: Perk Park Renovation

University of Akron Blue Team captures design competition for all-titanium bridge Spanning future Span will make trip to campus quicker By Linda Golz Beacon Journal staff writer Members of the University of Akron's Blue Team are anything but sad. They're the winners of the Design the Future: Titanium Pedestrian Bridge Design competition. Billed as the first bridge in the world that will be made solely with titanium — rather than steel or other metals — it is designed to span the railroad tracks between the Quaker Square Inn, which houses about 100 students, and the university's main campus. http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/94559069.html- Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
Architecture review: Frank Gehry's Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas By Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles Times Architecture Critic May 19, 2010 Reporting from Las Vegas Frank Gehry's buildings can look unfinished or unruly — even a bit chaotic. But they often have surprisingly direct metaphorical stories to tell. Walt Disney Concert Hall is a joyously informal ship of state for a city keen to come together, if only for a few hours, in a collective experience. Gehry's own house in Santa Monica, a modest pink bungalow the architect wrapped in colliding layers of corrugated metal and chain link, is an unabashed affirmation of the workaday, un-pretty built landscape of Southern California. In the case of Gehry's newest project, the riotously sculptural $100-million Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, the story is about the depths — and ultimately the limits — of the human mind. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-gehry-vegas-20100519,0,5357916.story- Akron: University of Akron: Development and News

The finalists were winnowed by judges from roughly 14 teams that entered the competition. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/05/titanium_bridge_design_competi.html couple of renderings- Portage County: Development and News
Hurdles to raze block remain: Kent planning redevelopment By Matt Fredmonsky Record-Courier staff writer The city of Kent and its development partners, who are planning to revamp an entire downtown block, have a few hurdles yet to clear before demolition crews can begin preparing the block for new construction. 10 charter schools sue White Hat over assets For-profit management firm founded by David Brennan has too much power, boards say By John Higgins Beacon Journal staff writer The governing boards of 10 Ohio charter schools are challenging the legality of the state law regulating the for-profit corporation that operates their schools, Akron-based White Hat Management. In a suit filed Monday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, the school boards argue the law is unconstitutional because it gives too much power to White Hat, one of the largest charter school operators in the nation. http://www.ohio.com/news/94046789.html- Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
UA to move plaques from Memorial Hall Signs honoring service members killed in WWII will be relocated before demolition of building By Jim Carney When the University of Akron's 57-year-old Memorial Hall is demolished this year to make way for a new school of education, more will be dislocated than physical education facilities and aging classrooms. Memorial Hall, where university and high school basketball games were played for many years, is so named for its recognition of the Akron area's war heroes. In the entryway are plaques bearing the names of more than 1,500 local service members killed in World War II. http://www.ohio.com/news/93556494.html- Akron, Ohio
