  1. This is interesting as the very idea was discussed in this thread for a couple pages. Great article @KJP SHW executives, according to sources, said they weren't interested in building an iconic tower to rival the height of neighboring Key Tower, a 57-story, 888-foot-tall, 1.3-million-square-foot skyscraper. As one SHW executive explained when he was asked why the conservative company wasn't considering an ostentatious skyscraper on the Jacobs lot, "Our stock value is up to nearly $600 per share because we're conservative," he said.
  2. It's actually one month ahead of schedule.

January 08, 2020 10:08 AM updated 22 hours ago Akron's new BLU-tique Hotel opens its doors to overnight guests Sue Walton For developer Tony Troppe and his new BLU-tique Hotel, the number one means a lot. "We may not be the first (downtown hotel), but we are the one," Troppe said Tuesday, Jan. 7, as he gave a tour of the new spot that sits at 1 S. Main St., right in the heart of the city center. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/akrons-new-blu-tique-hotel-opens-its-doors-overnight-guests
  4. Thanks. Would have been helpful to just put that in the first place instead of a "gotcha" situation.
  5. I'll disagree. I think the demographics of the area currently more support a Kohl's for clothing and home goods than a Macy's.
  6. The company that currently owns the mall is known for doing this all over the country. They buy "dead" malls. I assume they hope that someone like Amazon will want the land and they can profit. I also assume if that happens 1 out of 5 times, for instance, they are in the black. I was talking to someone yesterday who was actually mad that the "City" was basically trying to get them to close. Obviously there are a lot of parts to this equation and it's not the city's fault that someone isn't paying their water bill. The power is due to a private company and the taxes are due to the county. But this is the thought of the average person. Ultimately though, the county or city would come to posses it if it went into foreclosure they would be on the hook to demolish it. This is what happened at Rolling Acres / new Amazon. I was thinking about what could repurpose it as well. My unfortunate thought was a Walmart with grocery. I'm not sure how much more retail the area can support. I noticed recently that the Walgreens, that is in a new strip mall with other new retailers, closed.
  7. What do you mean they don't have any authority? If it's a life safety issue they would.
  8. Summit County to begin foreclosure proceedings against Chapel Hill Mall Updated Jan 06, 2020;Posted Jan 06, 2020 By Robin Goist, cleveland.com AKRON, Ohio -- Summit County has begun preparing a foreclosure complaint against the owners of Chapel Hill Mall, which avoided being forced to close Friday after the property owner made a partial payment on an overdue water and sewer bill. As of Monday, the mall’s owner - Chapel Hill Mall Realty Holdings, managed by Mike Kohan of New York-based Kohan Retail Investment Group - owes $166,290.04 in real estate taxes, LaMonica said. In the middle of this month, the fiscal office will send out the property’s first-half real estate tax bill in the amount of $237,128.19. Kohan will owe a combined $403,418.23. https://www.cleveland.com/akron/2020/01/summit-county-to-begin-foreclosure-proceedings-against-chapel-hill-mall.html I wonder what this land could be re-purposed for...
  9. Probably not going to be much longer though. The power was almost shutoff last month.
  10. A building of that size will still require fire suppression. There is no getting around it.
  11. Here is what it is more likely to resemble when constructed.
  12. Please show me a rendering where a sprinkler head is present. The idea of a rendering is to sell the product. I can pretty much guarantee the windows on the building will not be that clear looking in from the outside as well.
  13. Interesting, the renderings are proposing a mass timber structure. Would be a first for Cleveland.
  14. Akron to shut down Chapel Hill Mall over late utility bill By Doug Livingston Beacon Journal Posted Jan 2, 2020 at 5:59 PM Updated Jan 2, 2020 at 11:53 PM Akron public utilities workers are expected to disconnect the water at the Chapel Hill Mall on Friday for nonpayment. This is the third time in the past year that the mall has faced a utility disconnection. Ohio Edison scheduled and rescinded electricity shutoffs in April and December after accepting late payment. https://www.beaconjournal.com/news/20200102/akron-to-shut-down-chapel-hill-mall-over-late-utility-bill?utm_source=SFMC&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Akron Beacon Journal daily 2020-01-03&utm_content=GTOH_ABJ&utm_term=010320

  18. DeWine administration, in ‘180-degree turn,’ focuses on improving Ohio highway rest areas Posted Dec 10, 2019 By Jeremy Pelzer, cleveland.com COLUMBUS, Ohio—Gov. Mike DeWine and his administration have a vision for what highway rest areas in Ohio should look like. Lodge- or chalet-style buildings are surrounded by native grasses, well-lit parking areas and dog parks. Inside, flat-screen TVs display weather conditions, while travelers gather around kiosks with educational displays about great Ohioans like astronaut Neil Armstrong or the state’s role in the Underground Railroad. Speakers play a soundtrack of songs from famous Ohio musicians like Chrissie Hynde and Johnny Paycheck. https://www.cleveland.com/open/2019/12/dewine-administration-in-180-degree-turn-focuses-on-improving-ohio-highway-rest-areas.html
  19. Without a description I'm not even sure what the purpose of the video is. There should be some commentary as it's going through the spaces.
  20. December 08, 2019 04:00 AM Akron's Martin House boutique hotel on track for 2020 launch Dan Shingler With plans firmed up and financing nearly finalized, Akron and its eponymous university are closer to getting a new boutique hotel that backers say will reactivate an important part of campus while giving the school and city some much-needed high-end lodging. The slated conversion of the former University Club and Martin Center into the Martin House hotel also will put a little money into the University of Akron's coffers from an initial lease payment and, if all goes as planned, with ongoing income from the hotel's profits. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/akrons-martin-house-boutique-hotel-track-2020-launch?utm_source=akron-morning-roundup&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20191209&utm_content=article1-image

  22. Yes, this has been previously mentioned in this thread as well as KJP's articles. They were the lead designer for Goodyear's new headquarters and I believe Timken's HQ expansion as well in North Canton. On top of that they took over design on the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. So, they have had a pretty big impact in NE Ohio in recent years.
  23. It's possible they already have or are considering it -- after all, why would people from Gensler's Chicago office start following me on Twitter? By the way "hello" -- hope you're enjoying the blog! ??great!
