  1. It's also "Modern architecture".... Modern architecture: Summa reveals what its new, six-story tower will look like By Amanda Garrett Published: March 30, 2017 - 06:04 PM Summa Health on Thursday unveiled architects’ renderings of its new front door — a modern-looking, curved, six-story tower that will redefine its main campus in Akron. The 300,000-square-foot building — which Summa calls its West Tower — will be the centerpiece of the health system’s $350 million facilities plan announced a year ago. http://www.ohio.com/business/modern-architecture-summa-reveals-what-its-new-six-story-tower-will-look-like-1.757255#
  2. Breaking New Ground – Hospital Expansion Officially Begins March 9, 2017 by Kathy Johnson Today, employees, hospital and business leaders, patient families and community dignitaries gathered under sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures for the official groundbreaking of our Considine Professional Building’s expansion. “As an independent, freestanding children’s hospital we are 100% focused on children and families,” said Bill Considine, president and chief executive officer. “We view every project we do through the eyes of a child and the Considine expansion is no exception.” http://inside.akronchildrens.org/2017/03/09/breaking-new-ground-hospital-expansion-officially-begins/
  3. Plenty of workers in the block immediately South on Main. The biggest issue I've seen is that those workers are much more likely to head toward Main/Exchange than Main/Market because there isn't really reason to be at that Market intersection. You've got Musica/Uncorked and a couple other places a block up but those really don't have the draw of a lot of those food places down towards Exchange. Right, but I'm not just talking about foot traffic, I mean a lot of downtown employees relocated to which there has been no replacement.
  4. Business group seeks train depot in Merriman Valley By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: March 21, 2017 - 12:13 PM A business group is hoping to get a train depot built in Akron’s Merriman Valley. Whether that’s possible, however, isn’t clear to the many entities that would be involved. The newly formed Merriman Valley Business Association has posted a petition on Change.org encouraging the construction of the building, which would serve as a stop for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/business-group-seeks-train-depot-in-merriman-valley-1.755109 Future is uncertain for $200,000 tax-delinquent and dilapidated Rubber Bowl By Doug Livingston Published: March 23, 2017 - 02:44 PM Back taxes are approaching $200,000 at the Rubber Bowl as the private owner punts on a football-themed reutilization plan. Now, the owner is selling a $9.2 million renovation to convert the iconic stadium into “the second-largest venue in Northeast Ohio for holding concerts” and outdoor music festivals. But, quietly, leaders from the city and county are inching toward foreclosing on what has become a safety concern. A garage beneath the bleachers caught fire in January, and there have been reports of unauthorized inhabitants. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/future-is-uncertain-for-200-000-tax-delinquent-and-dilapidated-rubber-bowl-1.755745#

  6. Making downtown Canton ‘an extension’ of Hall of Fame Village By Alison Matas Posted Mar 21, 2017 at 9:45 AM Updated Mar 21, 2017 at 9:54 AM CANTON You can't see downtown Canton from the Pro Football Hall of Fame campus. So city leaders are brainstorming ways to encourage out-of-town visitors to make the three-mile trek from Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village to the city center. "We feel it's really important to do what we can to not only connect with the Hall of Fame Village, but in time, hopefully, we can make (downtown) feel like an extension of the Village," said Mike King, who chairs the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District. The district has a special "connectivity" subcommittee dedicated to brainstorming ways to link the locations. http://www.cantonrep.com/special/20170321/making-downtown-canton-an-extension-of-hall-of-fame-village

  8. Marchionda’s $32.1M Stambaugh Renovation Proceeds on Schedule By Sean Posey | March 20, 2017 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — What look like drinking fountains near the staircases in the Stambaugh Building are anything but. They’re spittoons, relics of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and they’ll remain as the building is transformed into a Hilton DoubleTree Hotel. The historic aspects of the common spaces in the building will be fully rehabilitated. “The marble that you see around the walls is going to be taken off,” developer Dominic Marchionda says. “It’ll be restored and polished.” http://businessjournaldaily.com/marchiondas-32-1m-stambaugh-renovation-proceeds-on-schedule/
  9. Hercules development could give Canton more strength Posted Mar 19, 2017 at 12:30 PM By Charita Goshay Because Hercules is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was eligible for Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive program, which provides a 20-percent credit for restoring buildings that meet the criteria. The Hercules site has been occupied since the 1870s. One of its earliest occupants was Cornelius Aultman's "thresher" company, Timken said. Current buildings range from the 1900s to the 1940s. 15. Copenhagen is one of the richest cities and highest cost of living cities in the world (ahead of NYC). It's not really a fair comparison to the photo. As w28th pointed out however, they also take more pride in their built environment. The trash burning plant which fuels the city's steam heat also has a pretty cool steam chimney that will blow a steam ring out. The city did not want to pay for this so it was successfully crowd funded by the architect.
  16. Wow, kind of a big hit for Downtown.

  22. Feel free to develop your own project and incur the cost of brick. Even in high dollar areas like NYC, brick is not always used. In terms of design, the balcony's on the top floor that don't have any roof cover is an interesting thought.
  23. *Looks out the window of the train on my way home to Brooklyn at the still unfinished World Trade Center that still has an entire tower to build, a performing arts center to build, and a tower to complete despite being several times over budget and a decade behind schedule* Haha
