  1. Food Notes: Lamp Post moves; small plates at Grapes in a Glass; Acme renovations progress; charitable wines for tasting By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer Published: March 29, 2016 - 06:12 PM | Updated: March 30, 2016 - 01:42 PM Starbucks confirmed Work progresses on the new Starbucks in the former China Gourmet, across from Ken Stewart’s Grille on West Market Street in Akron. Notice I didn’t say “rumored Starbucks,” as I’ve said before. Frank Licata, president of LRC Realty in Akron, confirmed Tuesday that the site is indeed going to be a Starbucks, with a drive-through. The China Gourmet, a onetime Wendy’s, closed last year. Previously, Licata had only been willing to say that LRC did have plans for a “specific tenant” at the site. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/food-notes/food-notes-lamp-post-moves-small-plates-at-grapes-in-a-glass-acme-renovations-progress-charitable-wines-for-tasting-1.672369#
  2. Interesting note that the bar was reclaimed from the New York Spaghetti House. The one pearl in a sea of rotten oysters.
  3. Yes, I don't think it's without reason though. 8 mile corridor with many residential arteries. I wouldn't even call them clusters, it's pretty continuous. This is just replacing one. I will say I did think the same thing when Earth Fare opened as to how they were going to make it. I don't think the Target or Wal Mart are "supercenters". They have snacks but not produce. I don't believe West Point Marketplace has announced the new location(s). Although they did mention Fairlawn at one point. Also, there are two Mustard Seed's now.
  4. Akron Whole Foods taking shape; West Point Marketplace adds pet store and high-tech gym By Amanda Garrett Beacon Journal staff writer Published: March 27, 2016 - 07:32 PM | Updated: March 28, 2016 - 06:55 AM Jubilation and mourning erupted online last week after someone posted a site plan for Akron’s first Whole Foods on Facebook. The architectural drawing of West Point Marketplace shows only a triangle of green where the Circle K sits at the corner of West Market Street and North Hawkins Avenue. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/akron-whole-foods-taking-shape-west-point-marketplace-adds-pet-store-and-high-tech-gym-1.671915#
  5. Was this for commercial work? I have never heard nor seen a commercial plan review and permit issued that fast. This is for residential. Ah, well there you go. Residential and Commercial are drastically different. If you're porch falls apart and you break your leg, no big deal. If an apartment building falls down and kills people, that's a big deal.
  6. I would love to see Gilbert have the impact that he has had on Detroit in Cleveland. Thankfully, Cleveland isn't as far down as Detroit was.
  7. Food Notes: Chop & Swizzle opens in old firehouse; culinary grads plan feast; Menches talks burgers By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer Published: March 22, 2016 - 07:23 PM | Updated: March 23, 2016 - 12:24 PM Chop & Swizzle, a new craft cocktail bar, quietly popped up in the old fire station at 60 Maple St. in Akron’s West Hill neighborhood. The new bar/eatery is from Dick Kanatzar — known as Chef Dick — and Daniel Allyn, with Kanatzar supplying his creative eats from a food truck for the time being. http://www.ohio.com/business/food-notes-chop-swizzle-opens-in-old-firehouse-culinary-grads-plan-feast-menches-talks-burgers-1.670976

  9. The Civic is doing fine now. They hired a national company a couple years ago to do bookings which in-turn brought national acts to the venue. Before they did everything in house. The Landmark Block, as it is known, around the Civic has been under developer control since before the market crash. I had heard that it was up for option at the end of last year, but I think the developer renewed it. This is all hearsay, so I'm not sure what actually is happening. The Chamber trips to other cities seem to have little impact on "change" in our community. At least from what I see. A group visited Milwaukee two years ago. I'm not sure what ever came of that. The Knight Foundation however has sponsored some trips, more aimed at young professionals, and they have actually had some community impact. Among other initiatives, Akron2Akron was created which are guided tours of Akron's neighborhoods that are open to the public.

  11. Two new concert venues coming to Akron's East End complex March 15, 2016 Updated 19 minutes ago By Sue Walton The former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. headquarters on East Market Street will even see more life soon as two new concert venues are set to debut there. The release did not specify an opening for the hall. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160315/NEWS/160319885/two-new-concert-venues-coming-to-akrons-east-end-complex#utm_medium=email&utm_source=ccl-akronbreaking&utm_campaign=ccl-akronbreaking-20160315
  12. EnPro's Stemco Divison building new R&D center in Fairlawn March 11, 2016 Updated 3 days ago By MIKE MCNULTY, RUBBER & PLASTICS NEWS EnPro Industries Inc.'s Stemco Division, which is moving quickly to shore up and expand the capabilities of its recently acquired air springs operation, is building a new research and development center in Fairlawn. Stemco Air Springs' R&D operation will be housed in a 20,200-square-foot facility being built specifically for the unit, according to David Brinkman, segment business leader. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160311/NEWS/160319957/enpros-stemco-divison-building-new-rd-center-in-fairlawn#utm_medium=email&utm_source=ccl-akronmorning&utm_campaign=ccl-akronmorning-20160314

  14. Hall of Fame Village youth sports complex underway By Kelli Young
Repository staff writer Posted Mar. 10, 2016 at 9:56 AM Updated Mar 10, 2016 at 10:31 AM CANTON Construction has begun on what Hall of Fame officials hope will make Canton America’s youth football capital. Work crews have removed the dugouts, bleachers and the backstop fencing at the baseball diamond on Don Scott Field. This week, a bulldozer pushed mounds of dirt over the diamond’s former infield to make way for a planned amateur football sports complex. The complex, which includes eight youth fields, a championship field with 1,500 seats, and a football-sized concourse area, is part of the $476 million Hall of Fame Village project that began last fall with the renovation of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. http://www.cantonrep.com/news/20160310/hall-of-fame-village-youth-sports-complex-underway
  15. Food notes: Whiskey Ranch, 35 Brix coming to Green; West Point update; vote at Niko’s Sandwich Board By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer Published: March 8, 2016 - 06:31 PM The plan is now to open a permanent spot downtown — Vernon said that because of ongoing negotiations he can’t say where — in a space that already has a kitchen. That would supply a Fairlawn location; again Vernon wouldn’t disclose specifics. He hopes to get both open later this year, and notes that he is keeping managers on the payroll. And there’s no longer talk about “interim” or temporary sites. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/food-notes-whiskey-ranch-35-brix-coming-to-green-west-point-update-vote-at-niko-s-sandwich-board-1.667426

Akron Zoo plans to renovate its Tiger Valley exhibit, add monkeys and build giant Ferris wheel By Rick Armon Beacon Journal staff writer Published: March 7, 2016 - 07:04 PM The Akron Zoo is planning to renovate its Tiger Valley exhibit, add monkeys and build a 64-foot Ferris wheel. Zoo President and Chief Executive Officer Doug Piekarz unveiled the wide-ranging project Monday night during a presentation before Summit County Council. The Tiger Valley exhibit, opened in 1998, needs to be upgraded to serve as a breeding facility for the African lions and Sumatran tigers housed there. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/akron-zoo-plans-to-renovate-its-tiger-valley-exhibit-add-monkeys-and-build-giant-ferris-wheel-1.667123
  17. . I'm thrilled that this place has been refurbished. That being said, I can't stand the finishes and details in the apartments. From the countertops to the ugly cabinets to the exposed duct work, it looks cheap and outdated. Where did you see the interiors at? The website had a bunch of pictures While nothing spectacular, they are nothing out of the ordinary. Cabinets and counters look fine, IMO. 18. Community house, hostel will be focus point for Bhutanese community By Betty Lin-Fisher Beacon Journal business writer The goal of turning a once run-down house in North Hill into a gathering place for the Bhutanese community and an international hostel for guests is taking shape — and its organizer hopes it will be an example copied in other parts of Akron. Last year, Jason Roberts, founding director of the Dallas-based Better Block, came to Akron to help community organizers pull off North Hill’s first Better Block event, temporarily transforming a stretch of North Main Street with pop-up shops and restaurants. http://www.ohio.com/business/lin-fisher/community-house-hostel-will-be-focus-point-for-bhutanese-community-1.666597#

  20. I'd comment here: https://www.facebook.com/wildeaglecleveland/?hc_location=ufi p.s. their motto is "eat, drink, inebriate." stay classy Cleveland Wow, the "substance", or lack there of, is aimed at chili cheese fries and getting blacked out. I hope they hire reliable security.
  21. I can't believe WRL would have their name on a design like that.
  22. First tenants set to move into Cascade Lofts, Akron's latest urban development March 02, 2016 Updated 18 hours ago By BETH THOMAS HERTZ This weekend, more urban dwellers will start to call Akron home as the first tenants begin moving into Cascade Lofts, a former tire factory that has been transformed into 24 apartments on North Street near Howard Street near the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Twelve of the apartments have been leased, and those tenants will move in between now and May 1, said Dan Sarvis, leasing and management director of Historic District Management. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160302/NEWS/160309952/first-tenants-set-to-move-into-cascade-lofts-akrons-latest-urban#utm_medium=email&utm_source=ccl-akronmorning&utm_campaign=ccl-akronmorning-20160303
  23. It's the camera lens. The building is not curved.
  24. Hmm, I think I'm missing something here. There are numerous renderings of the underside of the bridge in which it appears nothing is being proposed as a change. Doesn't it look like that now? Also, there is a rendering of new bench seating with a "light bar" on 9th in front of The Archer Apartments parking lot. They show a woman sitting there. She would be staring into the fence they have shown or across the street there is another surface lot. I just don't see it as a point of congregation. Like I said, maybe I'm missing something. I think the light bars will help under the bridge for sure. I wonder if they got rid of most of these ideas shown on their website? port
