Food notes: Springtime and the chef’s heart turns to new dishes; Mustard Seed and Fiore’s launch new menus By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer Published: May 27, 2014 - 06:16 PM | Updated: May 28, 2014 - 08:19 AM Spring is a time of clearing out the old, freshening up. At two restaurants just west of Akron, the rejuvenation focuses on what’s coming out of the kitchen. The longtime Mustard Seed Market & Cafe in Bath Township and the newish Fiore’s Italian Steakhouse have made significant changes to their menus. The Fiore’s menu is its strongest yet; it’s under the direction of Roger Thomas, a well-known area chef who joined the eatery earlier this year. The new menu at the Mustard Seed, specializing in organic items, builds on a revamp that launched a couple of years ago. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/dinners/food-notes-springtime-and-the-chef-s-heart-turns-to-new-dishes-mustard-seed-and-fiore-s-launch-new-menus-1.491292

This was done years ago though. They had a new Master Plan done last year, so I'm sure this was revised. Also, I highly doubt this "vision" takes into consideration the new residence hall that is next to the McDonald's on Exchange.

Some international recognition penned by Litt: Global Center for Health Innovation LMN Architects Cleveland Urban Remedy: The Global Center for Health Innovation and adjacent Cleveland Convention Center by LMN Architects aim to reinvigorate an aging downtown. By Steven Litt When it opened officially in October 2013, the new Global Center for Health Innovation in Cleveland, designed by LMN Architects of Seattle, became the nation's first medical mart, a year-round showplace for advanced medical devices and technology. The four-story, 235,000-square-foot facility is intended to help brand Cleveland as an international hub of biotechnical innovation by attracting health-care-themed meetings and exhibits to the city's adjacent new underground convention center, also designed by LMN. http://archrecord.construction.com/projects/Building_types_study/healthcare/2014/1405-global-center-for-health-innovation-lmn-architects.asp?bts=HC

/\/\/\/\ That's their "pie in the sky" goal. It would take a lot right now to ever get to that level. Interesting how they ignored the need for parking in that plan.

Somehow I missed the renderings above. Definitely the least inspired work yet from Dimit. I guess as their popularity grows their design dwindles, heading towards City Arch territory.

It’s an exceptionally long haul for a restaurant. After four decades, Gus’ Chalet of Akron, a local culinary icon that was a favorite gathering spot for local politicians, closed quietly May 10, the day before Mother’s Day. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/local-restaurant-institution-gus-chalet-closes-gus-puffs-served-even-on-last-day-1.489572

That was my suggestion for the survey they did. They could add a boulevard with strategic turn lanes (people would somehow be confused) and add a solid landscaping buffer so it doesn't look like strip-mall city. Hopefully this would also slow traffic. Improvements needed to make Montrose more attractive to pedestrians By Bruce F. Griffin Published: May 18, 2014 - 11:12 PM COPLEY TWP.: Built around easy automotive access, planners believe the busy Montrose shopping district could be more pedestrian friendly and more visually appealing. The shopping district that encompasses parts of Bath and Copley townships received a $50,000 AMATS grant to study land use and aesthetics, public transportation, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, vehicular access and circulation. Initial results of the survey have been released. Some 77 percent of respondents complained of disconnected parking lots that force them to get back into their vehicles to “get to a destination mere feet away.” http://www.ohio.com/news/local/improvements-needed-to-make-montrose-more-attractive-to-pedestrians-1.489026 suburban problems...

Food notes: The Game Bar + Grill seeks to up the game in downtown Akron; Food Truck Fridays rolling By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer There’s a snazzy new spot downtown where you can see the baseball game — live — for free. Why? Their thought is that they are paying taxes. The food trucks would not pay nearly as much in taxes, at first blush at least.

This? Campus International School http://archinect.com/firms/project/106324/a-new-school-vision-for-cleveland-experiential-sustainable-design/20196919 WHOA!!!!! I am complete in favor of that. You would need to be wearing sunglasses all the time. It's also severely lacking in structure. There is a reason buildings are built like this.

Yes, the whole base is scaled at the same height as the Convention Center. I think that's good. The canopy on St. Clair is huge. The Hyatt has a decent sized canopy but will be dwarfed compared to this.

Do you often have parties where people are sitting on your 42" high counter? Ha, I don't think that is a big concern for the masses. Not sure how you can tell from the photo if it's a gas or electric range. I do agree with the micro, but it has to be able to accommodate any size that someone brings in. I don't think these would be furnished with the micro's, but if they are then yes, it looks bad. EDIT: from the second photo posted of the kitchen I can see that it's a gas range, it doesn't have the grill top installed. I don't see why gas would be a problem for a high-rise. You would have your floor and wall fire ratings and the gas lines would have backdraft preventers I'm sure.
