Wow, shame. They must have refined it more when shortlisted. There is a different rendering on page 47.

It's coming, but it will be a slow process: http://www.artspace.org/ Take a look at Durham, NC I am curious as to who the Bidwells used in searching out property for their gallery, I doubt it was an avid Akron enthusiast. I didn't not see that part in the article initially but saw they worked in Akron, just assumed they lived in Treemont.

Are you talking about foundations giving money directly to build things? Akron has an abundance of philanthropy as well as backing by one of the largest foundations in the country.

Akron: Goodyear HQ & redevelopment
That wasn't really an option in this case. The Goodyear HQ is where it is. It would have been great if the company had chosen to build its new HQ downtown, but they didn't. The old HQ could not and cannot be turned into a downtown redevelopment opportunity because it simply isn't in Downtown. I fail to see the squandered opportunity here. You might be suggesting that the developer should have just let the Goodyear site go fallow and concentrated its money in Downtown instead, but even that might not have been possible for financing reasons--and the Goodyear HQ is a massive site and it is important for the city that it not lie fallow. It was a comment on the greater collection of recent development. OR they could move the Goodyear HQ like the Hower House. Just cut it in two pieces and throw it on a trailer, right? Wrong....airlift

Akron: Random Development and News
That's correct to a point. If you look at Cleveland, it had all those great areas, which are now blossoming. Downtown was lifeless and had no demand for housing for a long time, now there is a waiting list. I can't pinpoint when that turned, but once the developers started renovating the lists started forming. What do you mean by "community non-profits are virtually nonexistant"? While I love the idea of rail as a novelty, in NE Ohio people are too tied to the idea of having their car at all times. It will take more than our lifetime to change that.

Which is strange because there is no shortage of new student housing being built downtown, but nothing else can get off the ground. I don't think that's a good sign.

I guess it's more of a minor league for the NFL than an alternative to it. Still, I can't imagine getting more than 5k a game and that's if they're winning.

Food notes: The Grille on Waterloo opens at former Ripper Owens location By Lisa Abraham Beacon Journal food writer Published: January 29, 2013 - 11:15 PM Russ Mazzola has debuted his new concept at 491 E. Waterloo Road, where Ripper Owens Tap House used to be. The Grille on Waterloo opened Sunday, serving up soups, burgers, sandwiches, wings and plenty of other pub fare, as well as a full bar with 34 draft beers. Mazzola, of Bath Township, has been in the restaurant business for many years. His family owned several Wally Waffle restaurants, and Mazzola previously owned Parsley Place and Dakota’s Grille. He has owned the Waterloo building since 1997 and ran a Scorchers franchise there, but had been leasing it since 2002, most recently to Owens. When new lease negotiations with Owens didn’t work out, Mazzola said he felt it was a good time to come back with a restaurant of his own. “We’re changing it completely. We’re going more restaurant than bar and we’re concentrating on food as our feature item,” he said. The Grille on Waterloo opens daily at 11 a.m. Closing time is 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/food-notes-the-grille-on-waterloo-opens-at-former-ripper-owens-location-1.369043

The demand and competition are both very minimal. It's more of a "build it and they will come" mentality.

Akron: Goodyear HQ & redevelopment
/\/\/\ This was the most interesting part I thought: The now-solidifying redevelopment and reuse plans call for the upper floors of Goodyear Hall to be turned into approximately 100, one- and two-bedroom apartments. The ground floor will hold retailers while the historical building’s 1,500-seat auditorium will be used for concerts and similar performances open to the public. The rest of the campus, including Goodyear’s current headquarters, will be converted into office space, retail and more. We will see how this develops though. I'm not getting my hopes up yet, they have been working on this since 2007.

Akron Hotel Plans Could Be Revived Written by Larry States Thursday, 24 January 2013 15:52 Plans for a new hotel in downtown Akron are far from dead. A couple of years ago there was optimism a new hotel could be attracted to the downtown area but plans languished. New Akron City Planning Director Marco Sommerville tells AkronNewsNow there's a renewed push now to make it a reality. "The economy is starting to pick up and also our efforts in bringing a hotel to the city. We have been working on a couple of projects with a couple of people, nothing we can really talk about right now, but we are moving in that direction." http://www.akronnewsnow.com/news/local/item/70786-akron-hotel-plans-could-be-revived

yanni_gogolak replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentThe Saveur 100 Jan 10, 2013 Ohio Nachos Instead of using tortilla chips, Ohioans festoon potato chips with cheese and other toppings for a deliriously good riff on nachos. Our favorite version comes from Cap City Diner in Columbus, which features thick-cut kettle chips drizzled with a garlicky alfredo sauce, topped with Maytag blue cheese and chives, and heated until gooey. Pungent, salty, creamy, and crisp, they're our latest guilty pleasure. Bottom line, a dome provides more than just cover 8 days out of 365 (2% of the year). Other events can happen easier and that's why it's even being considered. The stadium is in use more than just 8 days. Please remember it does host many special event, such as American Idol auditions, concerts, etc. So Browns games or sporting event cannot be solely counted. All events hosted at the stadium should be included in the events total. Agreed, it was stated due to the fact that there were statements directly to the fact that football should be played outside, which are those 8 days. That being said, I don't know the number of other events, but I would guess that if the avg. temp. for a time period is below 60 you are not going to get much scheduled.
