  1. APS, UA working on Central-Hower site trade for scholarships 12/13/2012 - West Side Leader By Becky Tompkins DOWNTOWN AKRON — With its enrollment decreasing, the Akron Public School (APS) District has closed some schools and combined some others. The University of Akron (UA) has long been interested in the Central-Hower High School building, which sits flush up against the UA campus. The two education entities have worked out a way for the APS to transfer ownership of the building to UA in exchange for scholarships for deserving APS students. www.http://akron.com/akron-ohio-community-news.asp?aID=17982
  2. Here are some new images I found of the Akron Children's Hospital expansion project. These come from the Facebook page of the rendering company that the Architect uses, I would think. http://www.facebook.com/pages/M2-Studio-Inc/80513537880 and then a new article with another image: Akron Children’s expansion getting under way in 2013 12/13/2012 - West Side Leader By Kathleen Folkerth DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron Children’s Hospital officials said they plan to break ground in the spring for a substantial expansion to the hospital’s current campus. Work is already under way on a new $20 million parking garage. Hospital officials said it’s possible for groundbreaking to take place at property at Locust and West Exchange streets in April for the new $180 million critical care tower. www.akron.com/akron-ohio-community-news.asp?aID=17985
  3. Meh, I expect strange and out of place when architecture students get involved. Mostly because they are trying to get a name for themselves. I agree it looks off the shelf, but it's a simple enough design that it shouldn't age poorly. It fits the surrounding area while still having a touch of class. It's not being designed by the students. Ha, that's true. A look at the design for the new courthouse is all you need to see.
  4. Panera planned at former Big Boy property in Stow by Jeremy Nobile | staff writer Published: December 9, 2012 12:00AM Stow -- A Panera Bread is baking in the ashes of a former Bob's Big Boy. The Stow Planning Commission approved a site plan Dec. 4 for a new 8,800-square-foot building at 1063 Graham Road that would include a new Panera Bread restaurant and a second retail space. No user has been announced for that space yet. The business will be located just off Route 8 next to the Graham Road Wendy's and across the street from Red Lobster. http://www.stowsentry.com/news%20local/2012/12/09/panera-planned-at-former-big-boy-property-in-stow
  5. In a perfect world, sure, that would be great, but that's not how things work. I'm sure DCA works with these owners.
  6. Looks pretty "off the shelf" to me. Wait until the proposals for the new College of Architecture come out. Then we will see some creativity.
  7. Don't understand what you mean by "plan". You expect all of the restaurant owners to get together and agree not to enter into a market because there may be another steakhouse there?
  8. Nice, hope the Europe Gyro is a little nicer on the interior than the Kent location. Might want to clean that place once every 10 years whether it needs it or not, although who gives a crap when you're 18 beers deep at 2:30 on a wednesday night. Just skip that 7:45am class on thursday morning again, who cares right Yanni? "GYRO!" "16 Pepperoni Pitas please"
  9. A development officials refer to as “Building C” has one more paper hurdle before construction begins on the five-story structure which will feature 32 apartments and a new Bricco restaurant. http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/apartment-complex-new-restaurant-planned-for-kent-1.356564
  10. Wally Waffle has opened in Highland Square in the former Metro Burger space. Dunkin Donuts should be open any day in Wallhaven in the strip mall in former cigar shop space. Also in that same building there is now a Europe Gyro in the space that was a shish kebob place and before that Honeybaked Ham.
  11. From looking at all of the handouts and possibly more depending on employees, it seems like another one of those no brainers to relocate to a new facility.

  18. Plans changing for Akron block that housed church By Katie Byard Beacon Journal business writer Published: November 30, 2012 - 08:46 AM A high-profile block near downtown Akron is still getting a big makeover, but the project has changed. A “national retailer” is now planning to build at South Main and Thornton streets, south of Interstate 77-76, said the property’s owner, local McDonald’s franchisee John Blickle. http://www.ohio.com/news/plans-changing-for-akron-block-that-housed-church-1.353960
  19. The biggest areas that come to mind are right around FedEx Office - that is a giant block that is more than 1/2 weeds. You've also got the 3/4 leveled block on Exchange between Spicer and Rt 8, as well as the sea of surface parking that stretches almost the entire frontage of the Stadium. I don't even understand how that seemed like a good idea. There is already plans for housing in that area. Check the University Park thread. FirstEnergy to build $45 million transmission center in Akron By Betty Lin-Fisher Beacon Journal business writer Published: November 27, 2012 - 10:44 PM FirstEnergy Corp. will build a $45 million transmission control center at its West Akron campus, replacing an existing center in Wadsworth Township. The Akron-based electric utility announced plans Tuesday to construct what it’s calling a “state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly transmission control center” in Akron. The highly secure facility will be built off the Mull Avenue entrance to the company’s 150-acre campus that already houses an Ohio Edison service center, a FirstEnergy call center and a large office building and several company subsidiaries. http://www.ohio.com/business/firstenergy-to-build-45-million-transmission-center-in-akron-1.353450
  20. Wow, would love to see more of the interiors. From the one photo shown it looks really nice.

  24.
