Cleveland: University Circle: Cleveland Clinic Developments
Well Rounded As hospital campuses grow, how can they simultaneously shrink their environmental footprints? By Bill Millard for AIArchitect But the 1969 fire had good timing: Rachel Carson’s novel Silent Spring had spurred the environmental movement in 1962, and seven years later, the public was ready to take the planet’s degradation seriously. By then, the full array of urban-renewal-era pathologies prevailed in Cleveland: sprawl bred abandonment and unemployment bred crime. Corporations treated the city like a sinking ship, while hospitals and universities weathered the rough decades by staying put and, in many cases, expanding. Now, the Cleveland Clinic and other so-called meds and eds have found that institutional expansion and greening are deeply intertwined with their community’s viability, and they are looking for ways to grow while staying green. Clevelanders point to the 1969 fire as a wake-up call and they hail the clinic, university hospitals, and other institutions linked with the Cleveland Foundation’s Greater University Circle Initiative as revitalization catalysts. http://www.architectmagazine.com/healthcare-projects/well-rounded.aspx

Cuyahoga Falls: Development and News
yanni_gogolak replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWhy do you consider this project a joke? Retail shuffles are common between the announcing and the completion of a shopping complex. This project is a vast improvement over what was there. If they do include a movie theater, I hope they look at the Rave Cinemas chain, which we have here in LA (and one recently opened in Columbus) and they are pretty nice and less expensive than, say, The Grove movie theater. The Akron area is severely lacking in modern theater amenities. I was at Regal Cinemas in Montrose while I was visiting a couple weeks ago and that theater hasn't changed in the 11 years since I've moved. Small screens, lousy "stadium" seating, small chairs. And with the AMC chain pulling out of Akron a couple years ago, it's time for some fresh blood. There's an AMC and Regal in Chapel Hill, less than 10 minutes from where this is. All it will do is shut one of them down. I do agree that we need a more modern cinema in the area, and bring a dang IMAX already. It's a joke because of how long it is taking to break ground and Stark keeps stringing the public along with their "announcements". They had everybody excited about the size that Menard's was going to be, now it looks like they are backing out before ground is even broken.

City officials and the developer are mum about whether that could mean Menard’s or Giant Eagle, the previously announced anchors, might no longer be in the project. http://www.ohio.com/business/movie-theater-in-play-for-proposed-portage-crossing-development-in-cuyahoga-falls-1.349648 This project is a joke. Diebold suspends plans for new headquarters in Green By Betty Lin-Fisher Beacon Journal business writer The company issued a statement Thursday saying it was “suspending indefinitely its plans to construct a new global headquarters facility. The company is instead focusing its resources and strategic direction on generating long-term, sustainable growth, using its assets to capitalize on acquisitive opportunities and invest in technologies and services that will help grow the business.” The company said it had no plans to pursue new construction options for its headquarters in Ohio, or elsewhere, and is committed to staying in its current location off Mayfair Road in Green. The company will be declining the previously offered state and local financial incentives. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/diebold-suspends-plans-for-new-headquarters-in-green-1.345012

Nice report Gramarye, very in depth. Were you reporting for the newspaper? 401 Lofts is aimed at attracting both: “These are upscale, high-end apartments located in downtown that we think will attract not only students, but young professionals and others who have that desire to live in downtown Akron,” said Michael Weiss, project manager for 401 Lofts and 22 Exchange. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/new-downtown-akron-lofts-taking-shape-1.269373 But from my recollection, they were only going to have 30 or so beds for young professionals. I don't see that in writing anywhere though. The new five-story development, which will be called 401 Lofts, will feature 209 apartments — two-bedroom and studio or loft-style. The 167,000-square-foot complex also will have an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, media room, game room, tanning bed, study lounges and surface parking for more than 100 cars. The $12 million complex will be marketed to University of Akron students and downtown workers. The rent will be about $700 a month per bed, compared to $600 a month at 22 Exchange. http://www.ohio.com/news/student-housing-gets-green-light-1.208880 Ken Babby takes over Aeros with fan experience a top priority and no name change in plans By Stephanie Storm and Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writers “I want to make Canal Park the destination place to be from April to September,” Babby said. “Despite all the hectic natures of our lives — difficult jobs, relationships, et cetera — we all need that place where for two or three hours we can relax, take a deep breath, rewind, slow down and enjoy ourselves.” http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/ken-babby-takes-over-aeros-with-fan-experience-a-top-priority-and-no-name-change-in-plans-1.342334

Cleveland: MOCA
Cleveland’s new Museum of Contemporary Art by Farshid Moussavi now open A lot is riding on the opening of Cleveland’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). For the frugal and cash-cautious MOCA, the museum must be a successful art destination that brings visitors and dollars in the door. For the community, the expectations are that the project will be the lynchpin in the regeneration of the area. And for Farshid Moussavi, the London-based architect who is designing her first museum and first project in the United States, the building must hit the right note with the public and the critics if she if to climb the artistic ladder as others have and win similar, substantive commissions. http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=20975

Funny you should say that. The building had to be approved by the City Historic Preservation Commission, whatever that means. http://www.ci.akron.oh.us/planning/common/programs/highexchange.htm I was looking at it this weekend. I don't mind the brick and fake stone, it's pretty decent all things considered actually. What I dislike is the EIFS areas and the white "bay windows". Not really sure what you call those architecturally.

Ok, I tried to help out here. If you want to get down to semantics I have quoted what you said. The University is not a Building Contractor, so you were incorrect. The project was developed (paid) by Richland Communities who is also doing 401 Lofts. Vista Construction LLC was the General Contractor. Richland has since sold 22 Exchange to another company. 22 Exchange is New Urbanist garbage design aesthetically. It's a bunch of cheap materials put together in poor fashion. The idea of it is successful. 401 Lofts on the other hand is more aesthetically pleasing, to me, but it will not have ground level retail. You're right about the CSU project. There had been a lot of public backlash in the design community about their appearance.

Akron: Highland Square: Development and News
yanni_gogolak replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYea, hopefully it will give the opportunity to renovate those spaces, which are somewhat of an eyesore. Yes, they give some character to the area, but it would be nice to see them brought up a little bit. I think they are probably still planning, doing site layout and such at this point. They only closed on the buildings around the beginning of August I think.

No need to start an arguing match about something that didn't happen in this thread. 327 mispoke about who paid for the lofts, which were privately developed, but stated "I think" after he said the University paid for them. Cleveland is building these types of developments at Cleveland State which are also privately funded by developers. The apartments in Downtown Akron are almost all setup to only be leased by students of any university in Ohio. The 401 Lofts, which are under construction, are slated to have some minimal apartments for "Young Professionals".

yanni_gogolak replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Northeast Ohio Projects & Construction1. The Von & The Cresecent apartment buildings have been vacant for years. At one point there was a grant to do some work, but it never finalized. They were demolished this and last week to make way for a new mixed use building. Retail ground level and housing above. Not sure how many stories above yet. The retail below has been speculated to include Capri Pizza, Matinee, Mr. Zubs, Ray's, and Good Life Tattoos. 2. The Grocery has secured a HUD fund that the City applied for to fund the project. The City has also approved the design of the building. They have not applied for plan review yet. Not sure when that will happen.

Once again 327 is responding without knowing what he is talking about. Seems to be a pattern. Cleveland has a lot more that is being renovated into apts. There is no need for new build yet. These new apts in Akron (2 buildings of which have been built) are mostly for university students and the pricing and layout is done accordingly. There is no big mystery as to why Akron got these built. A company saw the opportunity to build on relatively cheap land and they did it. That's like saying "Cleveland is building a new office tower with the Flats East Bank, why can't Akron get that done." One has nothing to do with the other. Please do a bit of basic research before you post. $1 to be exact. Child Guidance & Family Solutions building new facility 10/4/2012 - West Side Leader permalink bookmark By Staff Writer Photo courtesy of Child Guidance & Family Solutions DOWNTOWN AKRON — Child Guidance & Family Solutions (CG&FS) hosted a reception to honor former board presidents and discuss the organization’s building project for a new $5.25-million facility at the corner of East Market and Forge streets. The new 25,000-square-foot facility on Market Square will provide a better client experience through space for family therapy, improved waiting areas and expanded parking, according to CG&FS officials. Elaine Harlin, CG&FS president, explained the new facility will expand client services at the Locust Street office by 20 percent more clients and 53 percent more service units. In addition, its bio-medical corridor location will allow CG&FS to more closely connect with other medical services, such as pediatricians and family practices. http://akron.com/editions/Akron-Ohio-News-2012-October-4/Child_Guidance_and_Family_Solutions_building_new_facility.asp?aID=17186

Fairlawn to market city-owned lot for sale 10/4/2012 - West Side Leader permalink bookmark By Sean Patrick During the Oct. 1 meeting, Fairlawn City Council unanimously approved an ordinance approving the transfer of 12,326 square feet of city-owned real estate on South Cleveland-Massillon Road to Fairlawn’s Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) for the purposes of economic development. “It’s a piece of vacant land off Cleveland-Massillon Road,” said Mayor William Roth. “The city acquired it when Cleveland-Massillon was widened, right by West Market Street. This real estate will now be transferred to the CIC, and the CIC has already retained a Realtor to sell real estate and that Realtor is going to market the property. There are already two buyers that have approached the city. The Realtor — Warren Blazy with Jones, Lang, LaSalle — will market the property and obtain the best price for the city that he can. When the real estate is eventually sold, the proceeds will be placed in the CIC.” http://akron.com/akron-ohio-community-news.asp?aID=17163 Ahern’s building cleared for development 10/4/2012 - West Side Leader permalink bookmark By Kathleen Folkerth FAIRLAWN — Crews worked to tear down the former Ahern’s Florist building starting Sept. 26. Fairlawn officials said the building, pictured standing below right at the corner of Trunko Road and West Market Street, was the oldest commercial building in the city. It was built in 1925 and over the years housed several businesses, such as Flowerland in the 1930s and ’40s. It later was the site of Garver’s Pancake House from about 1959 to the mid-1970s. Ahern’s opened for business there in the late 1970s, according to Fairlawn officials, and that’s when the greenhouse in back was added. The building has been vacant for a few years. The site was razed, shown above, for the coming of a Giant Eagle GetGo gas station and convenience store. Trunko Road at the intersection had been closed for several weeks as work to widen it to add a turn lane was completed. The road reopened in September. http://akron.com/akron-ohio-business-news.asp?aID=17173
