Interesting tidbit from the Hansa article: Property records show that McNulty and Mark Priemer recently bought the Culinary Market Building, on West 24th Street, for $800,000. McNulty, who leases storage space in the 43,000-square-foot building, described the deal as a defensive move. He does not have firm plans for the property. But McNulty and his partners are looking for space for new ventures, such as producing charcuterie, aging cheeses and making bread. This guy shows no sign of slowing down.

Cleveland: Perk Park Renovation
Some international recognition Cleveland Scrubs Clean a Long-Blighted Park After nine years of fundraising, a transformed park in downtown Cleveland seems to personify the spirit of reinvention that has recently overtaken the city. Perk Park, originally built in 1972, was first conceived by I.M. Pei as a small piece of the 200-acre Urban Renewal District. It was once called Chester Commons (for its location at East 12th Street and Chester Avenue), but was renamed in 1996 for 1970s Mayor Ralph Perk. http://blog.archpaper.com/wordpress/archives/44454?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AN_blog+%28A%2FN+Blog%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

Work begins to connect Kent and university By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer KENT: Kent State University and city officials have talked about connecting downtown to the campus for at least 20 years. That dream is finally being realized, as work got under way this week on the Esplanade, a wide pedestrian walk meant to draw students and faculty to dozens of shops and restaurants that are part of downtown’s $100 million makeover. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/work-begins-to-connect-kent-and-university-1.326129

Winking Lizard plans major expansion By Rick Armon Beacon Journal staff writer Those plans include closing the Fairlawn restaurant and moving a few miles west to Montrose to the former Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in Copley Township. The new Winking Lizard will share the building with a Lizardville, a concept that features a small bar, retail beer sales and a large whiskey selection. The Akron market lacks a significant craft beer store and the Lizardville will fill that void, Lane said. Winking Lizard had been looking for a potential Lizardville site in the Akron area for a while, he added. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/winking-lizard-plans-major-expansion-1.324598

You can walk in that area I guess. The question is why would you.
-
Akron: Random Development and News
You can't walk to any retail or restaurants in Fairlawn / Montrose. The main reason that a good number of people live there is because it's a "sleeper" area for people that work north of Akron being right on 77.

Kelly cites poor visibility, limited parking and zero foot traffic as insurmountable obstacles to running a successful eatery at that location. So true. But very glad that Viaduct is doing well with special events. It really is a great space. But that area has not gotten any sorta traction beyond Stonebridge. This has been pretty obvious for years though.

Fair enough. I'm just of the opinion that designs are based off of construction capabilities and materials. In the early 1900's brick and stone were more durable and accessible than materials that we have today. With what we know and have the ability to do now, it seems odd to design things to old standards, especially when the quality and craftsmanship isn't what it used to be. Beautiful wouldn't be a word I would use, but to each their own. I think it's actually facing downtown. It said it's facing Jimmy John's, which would be downtown. The building is owned by Portage County, in which the seat (offices) are in Ravenna.

Kent architectural panel rejects Portage County courthouse design Thomas Gallick July 18, 2012 Portage County’s plan to build a new courthouse on East Main Street in Kent hit a snag Tuesday when Kent’s Architectural Review Board denied a certificate of appropriateness for the new Portage County Municipal Court. The panel took issue with the location of the lone entrance to the building, situated on the southeast corner, as well as the amount of parking on the site, the current home of Jimmy John’s sandwich shop at 303 E. Main St. The board, appointed by Kent City Council, decides whether buildings planned for downtown Kent are compatible with their surroundings. http://www.recordpub.com/news/article/5203928

Schulman breaks ground on dual-role Fairlawn headquarters By Jim Mackinnon Beacon Journal business writer Three to four firms competed to design the headquarters, Gingo said. They were told what Schulman wanted the building to accomplish, he said. Every firm but one came back with a design that looked like a strip mall, he said. The winning design came from Mike Ritenour, president of Landridge Development. Ritenour’s design met Schulman’s requirements and used different materials to distinguish the functions of the building, Gingo said. “I think it’s going to look great on this corner here,” Gingo said. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/schulman-breaks-ground-on-dual-role-fairlawn-headquarters-1.321151
