  1. Former Church of the Good Shepherd building to be razed for McDonald’s today Beacon Journal staff report Published: May 7, 2012 - 09:54 AM | Updated: May 7, 2012 - 11:32 AM The former Church of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church at 785 S. Main St. in Akron is scheduled to be razed today. In 2009, the church merged with Church of the Master to form a new congregation, Family of Faith United Methodist Church. Members worship at the former Church of the Master building at 800 E. Market St. In 2011, Rubber City McDonald’s purchased the former church near Interstate 77/76 south of downtown Akron for $500,000. The company also bought a cell phone store building adjacent to the church on Broadway. Plans are to build a new McDonald’s with a dining room to replace a location nearby across the freeway on Wolf Ledges, where there is no dining room. http://www.ohio.com/business/former-church-of-the-good-shepherd-building-to-be-razed-for-mcdonald-s-today-1.305418
  2. ...and in other beer news Indigo Imp opens tasting room Indigo Imp Brewery in Cleveland has opened a tasting room. Owner and brewer Matt Chappel built a small wooden bar with four seats. There’s also a small couch area. The tasting room is open from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Fridays only. If there’s more demand, the hours and days may expand, Chappel said. You can sample all of the Indigo Imp beers and also special cask ales. Indigo Imp plans to have two casks available all the time. It’s definitely interesting to sample the regular beer and then the cask version side by side. "We’re excited to serve cask beer," Chappel said. http://the330.com/uncategorized/indigo-imp-opens-tasting-room/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+the330+%28The330+Main+Feed%29
  3. UA to sell beer in stadium’s main seating area By Carol Biliczky Beacon Journal staff writer Published: May 2, 2012 - 03:40 PM | Updated: May 2, 2012 - 11:25 PM University of Akron trustees agreed Wednesday to become the fourth tax-supported university in Ohio to sell beer throughout their stadium. Athletic Director Tom Wistrcill said fans, including students, sought the change at
InfoCision Stadium “to enhance the game-day experience.” “We hope it will attract more fans to games,” he said. “It’s a positive step forward for everyone.” http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/ua-to-sell-beer-in-stadium-s-main-seating-area-1.304406 I'm pretty sure that NCAA rules don't allow alcohol sales in the first two years of a new stadium being under operation. I believe this will be their fourth.
  4. Chardon BrewWorks undergoes makeover Chardon BrewWorks & Eatery in Chardon has received a substantial makeover. The brewpub has added a 36-foot bar to the main floor. Previously, the main floor was reserved for dining and a small bar was located on a loft in the back of the restaurant. Owners Mike and Donna Nedrow worked with Chardon Tomorrow to design and build the bar. Also new are embossed plaques featuring some of the regular patrons. "From the time I took possession of the space at 205 Main Street, I have envisioned a bar on the main floor," owner and brewmaster Mike Nedrow said in a prepared statement. "I felt it was absolutely essential to our existance as a brewpub to have a bar on display, front and center. It has totally changed the feel of the space from restaurant into brewpub just as I had planned." http://the330.com/uncategorized/chardon-brewworks-undergoes-makeover/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+the330+%28The330+Main+Feed%29
  5. His designs are unique but to me are not fitting for a college campus especially seeing how conservative KSU is with their designs I take it you're not a fan of the Gehry building at Case! What about that design is unique? Gehry only has one design in his portfolio, just edited slightly depending on location. And Whipjaka, I think their failure with the Math and Science building might make them more cautious with anything more "extravagant." The unique part about the Case building is how the snow slides off the roof onto passerby's on the sidewalk. BCJ is far from over the top, they can appease most people and are fairly timeless designs. I also heard Steven Holl's name thrown in there. Their work is a little more contemporary, but they do a pretty good job of staying away from design that could become dated, like the Zaha Hadid school building mentioned above.

  7. Except the nearest freeway to this site is three miles away. I think that can be an advantage to market a different lifestyle than the standardized one that's copied just everywhere else in Ohio. If we want to keep compete for young people, then offer a lifestyle that's attracting them to the coasts, Chicago and a few other cities. We have the opportunity to do something unique and special (for Ohio) at this location. Let's not water down the potential for something more creative, branded and unparalleled. I don't have a problem with that garage. It creates a buffer against the 90 daily freight trains and 80 daily RTA trains that pass that site. But it reminds me of the line from The Blues Brothers.... Jake: "How often does the train go by?" Elwood: "So often you don't even notice." It's the garage on the south side of Mayfield that bothers me, as well as the skywalk. I'm especially concerned about the garage being designed without a public interface along Mayfield (ie: retail space or two, lots of glass/doorways, doors that open on to the sidewalk -- ie no strip of grass). In other words, if this has to be built, don't build it like this.... This is horrible. Having the bunker exit/enter on Mayfield would be bad news for peds. And the vending machines don't make this anymore pedestrian friendly! I almost laughed at how bad this is..... Instead, build it like this..... Put a little thought and creativity into it! University Circle demands this of you!! You're not going to win any parking garage debates on this board, ha.

  11. Supposedly the faculty gave suggestions for Architects they wanted, lots of international big names. I don't know if it has moved past that though. I know there was some talk of a new building being mixed in the budget when they were trying to get the $300 mil or whatever it was for upgrades.
  12. That's a good idea. The way it looks now is that it is more of a walkway only. Not really any other site features. Hey Yanni, what did you do, check it out after CollegeFest this weekend? Nah. You're too old for that now... Back in 2002 though... Yea, check out that house then hop right over to TC's wing ding house across the street, oh...whoops.

  14. Ken Stewart's will be making a venture into the Cleveland market with a similar in style Ken Stewart's Grille as an anchor in the Flats Aloft project. I also heard that Chris DiLisi, who left Flour a little while back, will be opening a sandwich shop concept there. Not sure if it is moving forward though. couple pieces already posted in building development: Market Garden Brewery's Sam McNulty to take over Garage Bar on West 25th Street in Cleveland Published: Friday, April 20, 2012, 3:11 PM Updated: Saturday, April 21, 2012, 3:41 AM Sam McNulty, operator of Market Garden Brewery, Bier Markt and Bar Cento in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood has signed a lease on the former Garage Bar, 1859 West 25th St. The entrepreneurial restaurateur intends to build on the success he and his partners, including brewmaster Andy Tveekrem, have achieved in Market Garden's full-scale brewing facilities. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/04/market_garden_brewerys_sam_mcn.html Mike Nowak Snags Dragonfly, Reveals Plans for New Restaurant Posted by Douglas Trattner on Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 3:30 PM Chef Mike Nowak, along with his wife Karrie, will open Black Pig (1865 W. 25th St.) by early summer. The chef, who since 2007 has been at Bar Cento and later Market Garden Brewery, has been looking for a space of his own for a couple years, he says. That search has taken him to Tremont, Duck Island, Detroit Shoreway, and Lakewood. But ultimately, he landed right down the block. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/04/20/mike-nowak-snags-dragonfly-reveals-plans-for-new-restaurant
  15. I think that's part of the overall poor thinking of a lot of cities in NE Ohio. "Hey, it's the best in this area". Why not one of the best in the country? The Cleveland culinary scene certainly hasn't settled for be in the area. Santa Monica and Miami are blowing the competition away right now. A nice looking and multi-functional parking garage? Yes http://inhabitat.com/first-leed-certified-parking-garage/ http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/9/view/14715/brooks-scarpa-santa-monica-parking-garages.html http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/24/us/24garage.html http://www.dezeen.com/2011/12/21/miami-beach-parking-garage-by-zaha-hadid/ Have you physically been to any of these? If not, i'm not sure why you would mention them?? The MB space is cute, if you're not afraid of heights, loud nose or high winds. It's an event space, with a floor of motor oil. Those Santa Monica parking garages rendering are better looking than the final product. Oh and the Pigeons love to nest in them. How are these even related to the topic? No, I haven't been to any, but I trust that the photographs are the real. I am simply talking about aesthetic. I already explained how they are related earlier.
  16. Same here. And that last one would be terrible to have in any downtown IMO. The first one is just an attention whore garage attempting to steal the attention away from beautiful historical buildings surrounding by being covered with tacky lights :P Attention whore? Exactly - "Miami Beach’s parking garages have received world-wide media attention and have become tourist attractions themselves." I'm not saying they are they are the most practical and an infill replacement for 515, but I don't think many out of towers go downtown looking for it either.

  18. Huge development project in Green clears zoning hurdle By George W. Davis Special to the Beacon Journal Published: April 19, 2012 - 11:02 AM | Updated: April 19, 2012 - 12:10 PM The two-project proposal, which could take as long as 20 years to complete, received unanimous approval for rezoning 246.5 acres of land from Town Park Boulevard extending south along Interstate 77 to about halfway between Wise and Greensburg roads. The projects are named Union Square and Park Place and primarily will be business/retail with about 13 acres of residential, Planning Director Wayne Wiethe said. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/huge-development-project-in-green-clears-zoning-hurdle-1.301449 Northfield, Hard Rock marriage praised By Rick Armon Beacon Journal staff writer So Wednesday morning, Joyner, 59, of Doylestown, stood inside the grandstand eagerly awaiting the formal news conference that Northfield Park and Hard Rock International are partnering to build a $275 million video slots and entertainment complex next to the racetrack. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/northfield-hard-rock-marriage-praised-1.301222

  20. I wouldn't say it's "typical", because nobody wants that to happen, but it does a lot. Depends a lot on the chef and management. Chef's can be very vain, and historically come with a temperament/drinking problem. Management can be unskilled in that position, as sometimes they are experienced servers coming from the chef's last establishment. I usually use the "3 month rule" to pass a firm judgement on a new place. In this case I think it's more the growing pains of opening their first brick and mortar place.
  21. It's not a storefront as in retail space, that's just what the glazing (window) system is called. Most likely stair towers. If you're not impressed by this design, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering the other parking garage designed by this firm on Euclid, east of The Arcade.
  22. It's pretty typical with the types of projects, developer driven student housing.
