  1. Tech center opening celebrates Firestone red, green By Jim Mackinnon Beacon Journal business writer Harvey Firestone’s gaze is squarely on the present and future of Bridgestone Americas. The big bronze statue of the founder of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., acquired by Bridgestone Corp. in 1988, directly — and deliberately — faces the main entrance of the state-of-the-art, $100 million Bridgestone Americas Akron Technical Center. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/tech-center-opening-celebrates-firestone-red-green-1.293945 Photos there Green residents, council members voice opposition to ‘racino’ in city By George W. Davis Special to the Beacon Journal Published: April 10, 2012 - 11:19 PM | Updated: April 11, 2012 - 10:18 AM GREEN: If those who spoke at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting have their way, the city won’t be getting a racino. Greenfield Road resident Pat Carleski stated she is “radically opposed” to a combined horse race track/video slot machine complex, commonly called a racino, on 80 of 192 acres of Akron-Canton Airport-owned land on the south side of Greensburg Road between Lauby and Massillon roads http://www.ohio.com/news/green-residents-council-members-voice-opposition-to-racino-in-city-1.293903
  2. I don't understand how the same 8 people always have negative comments on anything happening in Akron? If you hate what is going on so much, change it or leave. Haha, couldn't agree more. Somehow the mayor is always stealing our money.
  3. Developer, city agree on ‘financial center’ deal for downtown Akron By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer Published: April 9, 2012 - 11:39 PM | Updated: April 10, 2012 - 09:38 AM An Akron developer hopes to turn a prime corner of downtown into a hub for financial and business activity. 4. Seems unnecessary to me. Either people won't use the space for gathering as shown, or they will use the space which draws them away from the student center which is supposed to be a hub for student activity.
  5. Bridgestone Americas prepares to unveil its new Akron tech center By Jim Mackinnon Beacon Journal business writer Published: April 7, 2012 - 10:45 PM | Updated: April 9, 2012 - 12:30 PM The 430 or so people who just started working in the brand new Bridgestone Americas Akron Technical Center get to write on their office walls. They are actually encouraged to do so. Really. Lest anyone think that the world’s largest tire maker wants the interior of its state-of the-art facility splattered with graffiti, one wall in each office is covered with a special white paint that acts as an erasable marker board. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/bridgestone-americas-prepares-to-unveil-its-new-akron-tech-center-1.292632 some photos there
  6. The best news from this is: "A clock tower was proposed, but has been scrapped temporarily for lack of funds. Euclide said the clock tower will be built when the university can come up with the $1.5 million to pay for it." also see: http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/ksu-begins-work-on-new-campus-entrance-1.291708

  12. Other info: In other business, council: • Approved plans for Child Guidance and Family Solutions to build a headquarters at the northwest corner of East Market and North Forge streets. The agency plans to spend about $4.5 million on a 25,000-square-foot, two-story building — the first of a two-phase project that will include a separate facility on East Market Street owned by Child Guidance but leased to a Columbus-based private developer. The second facility will include retail, restaurants, offices and health facilities. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/akron-purchasing-former-bridgestone-facilities-developer-may-buy-them-from-the-city-1.284858
  13. Akron purchasing former Bridgestone facilities; developer may buy them from the city By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer Akron is purchasing the former Bridgestone technical center and clubhouse, which a national developer is also eyeing and may buy. The city agreed to pay Bridgestone Americas $5 million for the property as part of a 2009 deal that kept Bridge-stone in Akron, where the company has nearly completed a new technical center. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/akron-purchasing-former-bridgestone-facilities-developer-may-buy-them-from-the-city-1.284858
  14. Me either, I think the renderings also gave a false impression of the glazing. I was expecting it to be more of a translucent white, but the renderings are all shown at night so I think they were done to show white light coming through from inside.
  15. The HOF addition doesn't do much for me. Maybe it will look better when done.
  16. An FYI, I drove by Northside to see about DBA, which was supposed to open in March. I haven't heard anything about an opening and they have all of the windows covered so hard to say if any construction has happened. edit, haha, not surprised that a restaurant has taken longer to open than thought: Food Notes: Dante Boccuzzi to open dba restaurant in June By Lisa Abraham Beacon Journal food writer Look for dba (Dante Boccuzzi Akron) to open in the Northside Lofts in June. “We should be starting construction this week,” Boccuzzi said. “We’re still shooting for a first-week-in-June opening.” http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/food/food-notes-dante-boccuzzi-to-open-dba-restaurant-in-june-1.279843 This is sad: "Burgers at Summit Mall The Ohio Burger Company, which specializes in single, double and triple burgers made from local beef, is set to open in the Summit Mall food court on April 1. The restaurant is a new concept by Ray Benne, who previously owned Cyber Pete’s Internet Café in Bedford. He hopes to add six more locations over the next three years." There is already a great burger place at the mall with The Rail and the last place this owner had was an Internet Cafe? no thanks

  18. Giant Eagle gets conditional OK for big expansion in Green By George W. Davis Special to the Beacon Journal Waldo said another lane would be added to the pharmacy drive-through area, while a new entry vestibule is planned for the health and wellness concept, which is to include an on-site dietitian. An upgraded beer, wine and liquor area would include a tasting station, while the seafood department would be expanded and a sushi bar would be added along with a gourmet cheese island and deli. New produce and floral areas also are planned, along with a reset of center-store offerings. Waldo said landscape and access improvements would include sidewalks. http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/giant-eagle-gets-conditional-ok-for-big-expansion-in-green-1.283997
  19. Where on South Lincoln? I used to lived on South Lincoln, across from Dartmouth Place. And if they're already building this, then it's no longer planned. EDIT: never mind. I just found a map at their website. This is being built where there was a large complex of greenhouses which were in business when I went to school at Kent, but closed shortly thereafter and have been vacant ever since. I lived about 300 feet south of this.... I used to live to the East in Eagles Landing, between the site and Michael Schwartz Center. It was just a big grass area when I lived there and there was a single story apartment complex. Beacon First: KSU opens fashion school store By Carol Biliczky Beacon Journal staff writer KENT: Fashionistas, a new store in downtown Kent, features designs by Kent State students, alums and faculty. The fledgling Fashion School store offers clothing, jewelry and other accessories in a small, post-modern space suffused with gray and black. http://www.ohio.com/news/ksu-opens-fashion-school-store-1.284029
  20. My understanding was that UA had to fund the whole thing themselves from the get go (which is why the new education building was put on hold). Additionally it shows where the state's priorities are lacking (if funding was pulled) because the Law schools accreditation is contingent on improving or replacing the current building. When the originally released the info to start moving forwards with the project they said they need $23.6 million, of which $750,000 was secured from non-state source(s). They had released State funding as "TBD". I heard they did get money which was pulled, but I don't have a source for it. College of Education is about $13 million with $5 million coming from the state.
  21. Kent questions ramifications of illegal immigrants on contracting site By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer KENT: Some City Council members had a lot of questions after learning 23 illegal immigrants were among construction workers building The Province in Kent, a planned 596-bed student housing complex on South Lincoln Street. How did the workers come to be on that job? What wages were they making? Was the city getting its share of income tax? Immigration status aside, were they even qualified in their field? http://www.ohio.com/news/local/kent-questions-ramifications-of-illegal-immigrants-on-contracting-site-1.282171
  22. No, and it's on hold indefinitely now. State pulled their funding, so they have to figure out where to get some $$$, looking at donors. here's a link to the feasibility study they did in which they determined to build a new building instead of remodeling the existing: http://www3.uakron.edu/bids/lawschoolcmdrawingss.ppt
  23. I couldn't agree more, but there is some strong contention on both sides on that topic. Are you sure about renderings for the College of Education? I don't recall them ever releasing anything. Last I heard they were still working on the programming of the building (size of departments and even who would be in the building), then it got put on hold.
  24. The new Ed building was supposed to complete the overall design of the student center. It would look a bit incomplete if they didn't build where Memorial Hall was. What is that's where they were looking to put a new arena? As the article says, they suggested: "and Zook Hall would be renovated for its existing tenants, the College of Education."
