  1. KSU hikes tuition and dorm fees, approves union contract, borrows $170 million for capital improvements By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer To pay for sweeping building renovations and new construction that has been on the university’s wish list for years, KSU will issue $170 million in bonds and pay the money back through its operating budget. Lefton offered a few clues, noting that plans for new architecture, art and technology facilities have been discussed in the past, and that updating science labs is a priority. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/ksu-hikes-tuition-and-dorm-fees-approves-union-contract-borrows-170-million-for-capital-improveme-1.274404
  2. Viking Hall and Kinkos Demolition The project will consist of three (3) phases. This first phase will entail the asbestos/environmental abatement of both buildings by a certified asbestos contractor. This will include hazardous materials removal and disposal to a proper landfill. All ACM, friable materials must be removed prior to demolition. The second phase will be the salvaging of the Kinkos terra cotta façade for future re-use on this site and the final phase will be the demolition of the remaining structures above ground and demolition of foundations, capping and re-routing of existing utilities (mechanical and electrical) and earthwork (excavation and backfilling) of building site.
  3. What makes you say it's more fitting for the burbs? Only thing I would argue is that it appears to be set back from the street. Otherwise, I don't mind it. I'm not familiar with the old building though. Funny coincidence: The YMCA program director's name is Mike Brown, to add to Eric Snow donating money for it.
  4. Some shots of the Bridgestone progress, in the 3rd picture you can see the Boy Scouts of America building and the yellow brick that is typical of the area:
  5. New downtown Akron lofts taking shape By Betty Lin-Fisher Beacon Journal business writer A new downtown Akron apartment building is taking shape — and soon its roof will take shape, too. The upscale apartment complex, named 401 Lofts, is being built on 2.2 acres at Main and Cedar streets on property that formerly housed the Parrish McIntyre auto repair store. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/new-downtown-akron-lofts-taking-shape-1.269373
  6. Sasaki paints broad picture of UA campus By Carol Biliczky Beacon Journal staff writer The consultants would level Schrank Hall South, which is in need of extensive maintenance, to make way for more green space. Eight buildings would be remodeled and sometimes repurposed for new uses. For instance, the Knight Chemical Laboratory would become classroom space, and Zook Hall would be renovated for its existing tenants, the College of Education. http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/sasaki-paints-broad-picture-of-ua-campus-1.269034 Looks like they probably aren't going to build a new College of Education as originally planned.
  7. This has been in the works for a while. There is a lot of interest in the old building, some by the County. Of course they are investing money into it, creating new lobbies and elevator shafts. The picture of the install in that article really shows how "in depth" the facade design is. Designer:"I'm going to have a small window, then a bigger one, then another smaller one that is translucent to block sun glare, then an insulated spandrel panel. Yea, this is going to be really snazzy." Contractor: "Yea, we're going to need about 10,000 of them there panels." 70's design at its best.
  8. You don't like Potbelly's b/c it's slow but you do like La Bodega? hmmm....ok I think the bigger picture with a chain being downtown is that they do attract people, no matter how much we dislike the fact. Get more people shopping downtown and then there is more chance local people are going to be able to get funding to open their own places. I think a Potbelly's and a Chipotle or Piada would bring more people to Euclid than the current Jimmy John's and Zoup do.
  9. 2012 Akron State of the City Accomplishments Brochure: http://ci.akron.oh.us/webdocs/newsreleases/attachments/2012AccomplishmentsBrochure.pdf Rex Salvage building on auction block By Katie Byard Beacon Journal business writer The Akron property that is home to the soon-to-close Rex Salvage store — long a favorite of bargain hunters — is on the auction block. Bidders have until March 29 to submit offers for the property, covering about 4.2 acres at 1201 S. Arlington St. http://www.ohio.com/business/rex-salvage-building-on-auction-block-1.267993
  10. Cuyahoga Falls officials to review Acme’s plans at public meeting By Gina Mace Special to the Beacon Journal CUYAHOGA FALLS: City Council on Monday will get its first look at plans for an Acme Fresh Market that will replace the smaller State Road store. The city’s Planning Commission approved plans for the $8 million, 52,500-square-foot construction project during its meeting Feb. 22. http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/cuyahoga-falls-officials-to-review-acme-s-plans-at-public-meeting-1.267821
  11. Kent could create ‘entertainment district’ to allow more liquor permits By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer KENT: Kent doesn’t have enough liquor licenses. That declaration might raise eyebrows among those who know the college town’s reputation for bars. But officials say the success of a $100 million downtown makeover also hinges on attracting high-quality restaurants that want to serve alcohol. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/kent-could-create-entertainment-district-to-allow-more-liquor-permits-1.267783
  12. /\/\/\ I don't understand why these manufacturing corporations accept these facility designs that area poor replicas of poor 70's design. Look at this rendering, what Goodyear is building, First Energy's new office, etc... They all look like they were designed by a builder (no offense to the 5% of builders that understand good design).
  13. Now you're thinking like someone with an understanding for design and environment.
  14. That's correct. To each their own.
  15. Phase II lost a lot of the design quality from the original plan to me. Still impressive in scale if it gets done. Original design:
  16. GAR Foundation invests in Akron’s new STEM high school By John Higgins Beacon Journal staff writer The GAR Foundation pledged $800,000 on Thursday for a new high school specializing in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) that will open this fall in the former Central-Hower High School near the University of Akron. The foundation will contribute $150,000 immediately, then up to $650,000 more on a matching basis if donors in the community contribute up to $1.2 million by Dec. 1, 2014. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/gar-foundation-invests-in-akron-s-new-stem-high-school-1.266591
  17. I believe Bialosky did a lot of the design work at Crocker Park... Really a shame about Bialosky too because they are given a lot of great opportunities. You think that's a good thing?

  19. Food Notes: Restaurants are coming and going By Lisa Abraham Beacon Journal food writer Several local eateries recently have flipped their open signs to closed. The Creperie, which served stuffed crepes and breakfast sandwiches in Greystone Hall, 76 E. Mill St., closed after just eight months. It was run by the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau. Jim Mahon, director of marketing and communications for the bureau, said the restaurant just wasn’t attracting enough business to keep it going. Anyone with a gift certificate is asked to call Mahon at 330-374-8900 for a refund. Certificates also will be honored at Greystone’s weekly lunch garden on Tuesdays. Also locking the doors are the Sandwich Board in Wallhaven and Metro Burger in Highland Square. On the opening side, look for El Rancho, a Mexican restaurant, to open up in the near future at the former Yocono’s location. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/food-notes-restaurants-are-coming-and-going-1.266020
  20. Ate there Friday, I thought it was really good, big menu with lots of apps. Recommend the Crispy Pork Stack and Creamed Cauliflower. I got the Whitefish as well, similar to what Bumsquare stated, I don't think it was seasoned. Maybe it was, but it was under seasoned to say the least. Salt really goes a long way at bringing out flavors trapped in. I will definitely go back though and I also concur that I have never walked out of a Bruell spot disappointed.
  21. Bottom line, if the U of A is going to use their own money (read "the publics"), they can put it wherever they want. I don't know why any smart business wouldn't want to have someone else pay for a portion for a project though. Brandywine to build new $5 million lodge By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer Brandywine Ski Resort will be getting a new $5 million lodge to replace three existing buildings, according to owner Peak Resorts. Construction could begin in March, with an opening planned for November. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/brandywine-to-build-new-5-million-lodge-1.265285

Nor has Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, who said Monday he is disappointed that UA officials are studying the future arena without input from other government agencies or the business community. http://www.ohio.com/news/university-of-akron-studies-future-of-rhodes-arena-1.264926
