  1. Time Magazine Top 10 Food Trends By Josh Ozersky Wednesday, Dec. 07, 201 7. Artisanal Vinegars and Bitters The one thing you generally expect of new, laboriously made products at restaurants is that they will be good. But even bad can be good — if by "bad" you mean sour or bitter. The nation's avant-garde mixologists, mustachioed and otherwise, have taken up the creation of house-made bitters as part of their advanced drink programs, and their kitchen counterparts are following suit, with vinegars so complex and intriguing that they are sometimes served straight up between courses. Jonathon Sawyer serves half a dozen in tasting dishes at his Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland. Happily, they are for dipping fries rather drinking, however. 2. Green plans growth along Massillon Road corridor By Kathy Antoniotti Beacon Journal staff writer Dick Norton, the mayor of Green, addresses the Massillon Road Corridor Study Steering Committee at the Green Administration Building as he stands in front of a map of the project. (Karen Schiely/Akron Beacon Journal) View More Photos >> GREEN: If you plan it, they will come. Without a plan, however, they might start without you. City leaders have a vision for a bustling downtown business district along Massillon Road lined with pedestrian-friendly walkways, top-notch businesses and lots of green space along the five-lane, business-accessible avenue. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/green-plans-growth-along-massillon-road-corridor-1.251261

  4. Here's some photos my friend snapped on Dec. 2. He thought the grooved material was what was being applied to the building, but from the photos the mockup panels appear to be flat.
  5. Why city rankings always get it wrong Happiest cities, most livable cities, loneliest cities -- the Web's filled with lists. Almost all of them are bogus By Will Doig Hey, Memphis: Are you happy? Are you sure? Because Men’s Health magazine isn’t so certain. Last week, in a list of the “saddest U.S. cities,” Men’s Health ranked Memphis, with its subtropical climate and legendary music scene, as the third-saddest city in the country. Clearly the place has taken a dive since February, when Forbes reported that Memphis is the sixth-happiest city to work in. Memphis is apparently a little slice of heaven — as long as you’re sitting at the office. http://www.salon.com/2011/12/05/why_city_rankings_always_get_it_wrong/singleton/
  6. Oh, 12:30, perfect time...if you don't have a job
  7. Well-known area chef Dante Boccuzzi, partners to open restaurant in Akron space vacated by VegiTerranean By Lisa Abraham Beacon Journal food writer Cleveland chef Dante Boccuzzi has partnered with local developer Joel Testa and others to open a new restaurant in the former VegiTerranean location in Akron’s Northside Lofts. DBA, which stands for Dante Boccuzzi Akron, is set to open by March, Testa said. Work on the interior of the restaurant already is under way. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/well-known-area-chef-dante-boccuzzi-partners-to-open-restaurant-in-akron-space-vacated-by-vegiterranean-1.248255

  9. Little movement in Portage Crossing development By Gina Mace Special to the Beacon Journal CUYAHOGA FALLS: An anticipated update of the Portage Crossing development before Cuyahoga Falls City Council this week revealed little new information. Truby said the city and the developer are planning a March 2012 groundbreaking for the major redevelopment of the site. http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/little-movement-in-portage-crossing-development-1.247948
  10. Main St. in Hudson. Hudson has a number of great independent restaurants now.
  11. Does anybody know if you have to pay to have them review your establishment? How did Greenhouse not make the top tier? Downtown 140 is good, but how about the former chef's new place, One Red Door. Not many places doing a menu like that in Ohio.
  12. "Thasss righ man, nobody mess with the Jesus"
  13. Yea, good thing their Soccer & BBall programs have stepped up because their Football team is awful as is evidenced by the thumping Kent put on them.
  14. I'm going to assume that you don't live in Highland Square and I'm going to assume that you don't know what a hipster is. If you lived in the square and if you could recognize a hipster you would know that 1. There are already a lot of hipsters here and 2. They would not shop at Next, for the most part (unless they were trying to be ironic). All you have to do to encounter a hipster in Highland Square is to go to Angel Falls or to shop at Revival, their natural habitat(s). The demographics of this neighborhood is predominately made up of college students, gays, and hipsters with some young professionals, families, and old people thrown in. Yeah, I was wondering what was happening with that. It takes a while to get everything in place, rights, money, plans, etc...although, I'm surprised that they did not put up a project sign at least before the election. The owners of Mustard Seed live in HS, so I would hope that they weren't this devious.
  15. Yes, the food is terrible and the menu is very unimaginative. I wouldn't be surprised if most things came in frozen. Not much better IMO. I don't think downtown has the draw / density yet for a big chain to locate there. People still expect parking next to the front door.
  16. How do they operate four stores, yet in this day only have a free blog website that costs $20 for a unique web address.
  17. Retailer ‘Next’ is next for Highland Square By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer Akron plans to lease a vacant storefront in the Chipotle building at 837 W. Market St. to Finch Co. Inc., which will open a Next Store in the spot between Georgio’s Pizza and a space where Verizon formerly was located. Next will sell high-end, hip clothing and sneakers, mainly catered to a 20-something clientele. “I think they will be a great addition,” said Adele Roth, the city’s development manager, who is in charge of Akron’s retail plans for Highland Square that include a http://www.ohio.com/news/local-news/retailer-next-is-next-for-highland-square-1.245632
  18. • Joe Salem has opened a version of Primo’s Deli in downtown Akron on South Main Street. It’s not owned by Bob Mileti, who owns the original Primo’s on Vernon Odom Boulevard, but Salem has Mileti’s blessing to use his name and mimic his menu. • Signs indicate that a B Loco Mexican Grill, which has a location on Fulton Drive NW in Jackson Township, is coming to downtown Akron. http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/abraham/food-notes-restaurant-comings-and-goings-fabulous-food-show-this-weekend-1.244432 The new Primo's looks like it is in the space that was last the Varsity Bar aka the space that restaurants / bars go to die. Hopefully the Primo's name will bring a change to that space.
  19. As I suggested above, the terms "vibrant" or "active" are subjective. Great, it sounds like we're in agreement. In other news, Akron basketball beat Mississippi State last night, which was somewhat of an upset. The Zips seem to be the real deal this year. If things go right, we might see our first NCAA Tourney win... 8-) Kent St. might have something to say about that, go Flashes!
  20. I hope you're kidding. Why are they better, because they are brick? Most likely this is the look that the University wants. That being said, a planning commission really can't tell people how to design, that is a matter of opinion. I'm sure there were plenty of people who didn't want the Peter Lewis building on the Case campus.
  21. That's awesome, subtle slam. In my experience what happens with these university housing developments is the developer has to make their money with good profits within 20 years. Usually they sell them to the University for $1 after that. That being said, they want to achieve a few key things: 1. Keep them generic as not to upset too many people, most people don't comprehend "good design" and "urbanism" 2. Keep the design and materials to typical single family housing style so that they can hire anyone with a hammer and wheelbarrow to do the construction work, keeping their investment costs down
  22. I wouldn't say it's "vibrant", as Rustbelter had mentioned, mainly because there is no prominent retail...yet. It needs to have something for every walk of life. There are restaurants, arts, sports, some housing, but no major retail. It has been a huge turnaround in the last 20 years.
  23. There are no smaller areas, its one giant room. Like I said, the food is good though.
  24. Akron and schools agree to land swap; trade needed for new housing development By John Higgins and Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writers A new senior housing complex in Kenmore moved a step closer to being built Monday, with the approval of a land swap between the city of Akron and the Akron Board of Education. City council and the school board approved the plans Monday, which involve the board trading the city the property that houses the vacant Heminger Elementary School on Kenmore Boulevard for six residential properties purchased by the city and then leased to the district to build the new Schumacher elementary school. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/akron-and-schools-agree-to-land-swap-trade-needed-for-new-housing-development-1.244340
  25. I was at Zar on Friday as well. It will be an 18 and over night in 6-9 months. Currently they are reserving that to LUX and keeping it open. The biggest problem I see is that they have windows on two sides where you can see in AND you have to pay to get it. What happens when you can see from the outside that there is nobody in there? Are you really going to pay to go to an empty club. With LUX you didn't know who was there until you got up to the second floor. They have a Tilted Kilt in Pittsburgh by the baseball stadium, went once. That being said, I don't need to go back.
