  1. so, I just signed a lease with a few friends for a house on Flora Street on the border of Clifton and Corryville in Cincinnati. our landlord, Al Tepperberg of "Al's Clifton Housing" (http://www.cliftonhousing.com/) seems potentially sketch and I've heard both good and bad things about him. I just wanted to see if anyone here has any experience with him...he owns like 50-60 properties all over the UC Uptown area, so some of you may have rented these places or at least been through them... thanks!
  2. Clifton Gaslamp area. Safe, walkable, and reasonably priced houses. You have Burnett Woods to dog walk in (ironically, it also happens to be a big gay cruising zone haha...) and you can walk to the Ludlow Ave biz. dist which has a decent sized grocery store, independent movie theater, CVS Pharmacy, some great restaurants, boutiques, coffee, ice cream a post office and a small library. This area also has good public transit via the metro bus to get into the city. I feel your pain about the gay issue...Cincinnati can be an intimidating city sometimes for us gay folk. Clifton is full of young people...lots of students, professors, liberal minded people, etc. also, this area is within walking distance of a handful of parks, not just Burnett Woods, although that's definitely the biggest and closest.
  3. my assumption is just like UPA? am I wrong to assume that?
  4. okay, this makes up for the last one. at least they did some research for this, although this article just makes me feel more frustrated about the whole mess....read on: Still no timeline set for groundbreaking on vacant lot By: Kristen Pearson and Mike McQueary Posted: 3/13/08 The vacant land between West McMillan and Calhoun streets will remain empty at least until Fall Quarter because the Calhoun revitalization project lacks a groundbreaking date and is still in the planning phase, according to Matt Bourgeois, director for the Clifton Heights Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (CHCURC). CHCURC is a non-profit development corporation that has partnered with the Clifton Heights Business Association, CUF Neighborhood Association and the University of Cincinnati to undertake the redevelopment of the Clifton Heights Neighborhood.

  6. as a first year UC student, what amazes me about UC facilities is that they are either absolutely state of the art, amazing buildings, or they are simply awful. There are only a few examples of buildings that are middle ground, CoB being one. McMicken could use alot of work inside with things like the restrooms and corridors. Even DAAP is really showing it's wear inside and out. The stucco on the outside is faded, and cracked everywhere. Science buildings like Rievschl are AWFUL and totally inappropriate for as big and well-ranked as UC in these programs.
  7. yeah, actually if you know where to look and stay away from certain stores, TJ Maxx is amazing. The one on Chagrin in Woodmere is great...I've seen Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Lacoste, Raplh Lauren, and lots of premium denim there.
  8. "It's our only store that carries really high-end designers," explains Jerry Talamantes, director of public relations for Dillard's. "We have Escada, Alberta Ferretti, Donna Karan -- there's a customer base that supports it." LOL!!!! considering those names as "really high-end" is a JOKE. Dillard's will always be a step below Nordstrom's and Saks. I actually refuse to shop there because the customer service is simple awful. You have to go upstairs to a little customer service counter to return anything. Saks and Nordstrom any counter can take your return. I feel like I'm shopping at Wal-Mart the way everything is organized and presented. Plastic hangars, and everything is smooshed together like a mess. ugh. end of rant. I just cannot stand that store.
  9. ugh. this place is a hot mess. what's funny is that it's structurally a nicer mall than Kenwood, but a terrible selection of stores left. terrible location, most importantly....
  10. I think the "in the know" mcadrenaline has beat you to this news... previous page.. yeah, but it was kinda speculation. Plus I added Hollister and the True religion will have its own storefront and won't be a store within a store at Saks. I just heard about Hollister the other day, but it is my understanding that it will not be open for months... if you go back and read my original post, the speculation is in regard to Burberry, A/X, and Ruehl/Gilly. but that is correct that True Religion will be a separate storefront, but in the Saks wing. it should be opening in the next week or so. I think Delia's will be very interesting...my guess is that they will not be around for long, especially if Beachwood does take it up a notch in the next few years. They would probably do better at other Cleveland-area malls that are less brand-conscious.
  11. who did you send your response to and what did you say? I want to do the same. besides being poorly written, that info is just plain incorrect. I think the NR needs to make right and write an article on the REAL issues with the streetcar AND the REAL plans for this district.
  12. this article from today's News Record at UC confuses me to no end. since when is there a park going on calhoun? www.newsrecord.org/media/storage/paper693/news/2008/03/03/News/Streetcar.To.Cost.182.Million-3246124.shtml]http://media.www.newsrecord.org/media/storage/paper693/news/2008/03/03/News/Streetcar.To.Cost.182.Million-3246124.shtml Streetcar to cost $182 million Construction may delay work on Calhoun-McMicken Park By: Mike McQueary Posted: 3/3/08 Plans for a streetcar system in Cincinnati will cost $182 million and may delay development of Calhoun-McMicken Park between Ohio and West Clifton Avenues along Calhoun Street, according to City Council member John Cranley. During a Feb. 25 hearing on the project, Cranley asked City Manager Milton Dahoney if tax increment financing (TIF) that would be used to develop the Calhoun-McMicken Park would be diverted to the streetcar project.
  13. same!!! a light bulb, really!?!?

  15. then why is she even accredited to be giving advice on what is a strictly urban project. urban and suburban development are two completely different things are require different skills and understand to be successful with. cincinnati really needs the experts from portland, toronto, boston, etc. who know WTF they are talking about and how to sell this thing since they've been through it all already. its one thing to be against the streetcar with reason, but we should not have some misinformed nutcase parading around whose position in this project sorely inappropriate.
  16. Bar of Modern Art (aka. BoMA) Columbus Nominated for Best Club of 2007 in Club World Awards by Club Systems International, which in THE industry's most coveted award for the nightclub industry... It takes a lot for a club located off the beaten path to overpower offerings in the U.S.'s leading nightlife nexuses. But Columbus, Ohio's Bar Of Modern Art makes ambitious enough use of its 23,000 square feet to to impressively debut in this year's competition. Situated in a former Baptist Church, the Bar, or "BoMA," as the locals refer to it, gives patrons the option to revel in no less than three massive rooms: the "Underground" basement area, the Great Room and the Sanctuary. It's certainly the answer to many a frustrated Midwestern clubber's prayers. -JH Read more at http://www.clubsystemsinternational.com/year_archive.html/2007/10/places2.htm
  17. True Religion Brand Jeans (http://www.truereligionbrandjeans.com/) is opening a store on the second floor Saks wing of Beachwood place within the next two weeks. This will be their first company store in Ohio (although many luxury retails/boutiques already carry their items) and really one of the first outside of a major "destination" shopping area. Here goes all my money..... In addition, dELiAs (http://store.delias.com/) will be opening on the second floor as well, I believe in the Dillard's wing... There is also speculation about Tiffany (I feel good about this one), Burberry, Armani Exchange, and Abercrombie's new brands RUEHL no.925 and Gilly Hicks making their way into Beachwood Place in the coming months.
  18. This area has seen probably the most tremendous growth in Cincinnati in the last few years. as the new development [hopefully] comes to fruition soon I cannot help but think of the possibilities for new retail, restaurants, entertainment, etc. This is a crucial area to students living on and off campus. I'm going to throw some of my 'wants' out there and I want to see what you guys think. -Trader Joes (a long shot, but I constantly run into UC people at the Kenwood one. Clifton is FULL of people that love this place) -Tanning Salon and/or Hair Salon (we don't really have a proper, clean, and efficient place to tan or get our hair cut...this is a problem!) -Fast order Thai restaurant (one that has reasonable hours, unlike Thai Express on McMil.) -Verizon/AT&T Company Store (NOT authorized retailer...) -Barne's & Noble/Borders/Jospeh Beth, etc. (because the UC bookstore is lackluster when it comes to non-text books) -Lenscrafters/Eyemasters, etc. -Dry Cleaner (is Shirley's Laundry on McMil even open?!) -Radio Shack (seriously, there is no good place in walking distance to get batteries, ink cartridges, Ethernet cables, etc. when you need them) -Sherwin Williams or small hardware store -First Watch/other breakfast joint (although we are getting on IHOP at Vine and MLK)
  19. so this afternoon I saw some guys hauling an industrial sized stainless steel sink out of the old Hardee's today in broad daylight. I'm not sure if they broke in or not, but it did not look like they forced their way in...the side door was propped open and they were putting this thing in the back of a beat up pickup truck. hopefully this is a sign that they may be demolishing soon?
  20. Carew Tower logo in works Kendle mulls high-rise ad BY KEITH T. REED | [email protected] Is Cincinnati's tallest building about to be adorned with a corporate logo? Kendle International Inc., which decided to keep its headquarters at downtown's Carew Tower after receiving economic incentives from Cincinnati and the state of Ohio, wants to hang its brand prominently atop the building. It would be yet another change to the Queen City skyline at a time when several new developments, including The Banks and a new 40-story office tower, promise to alter the cityscape in the coming years. Kendle would join companies including Fifth Third Bank, National City Bank, PNC Bank, U.S. Bank and, most recently, Macy's, whose neon effigies grace downtown buildings, bluntly staking out their territory on the corporate landscape. The city's largest company, Procter & Gamble, is a notable exception. MORE: http://www.enquirer.com
  21. The tile stuff you see is most likely from the McDonalds that used to be there. As for the development plan, and what is included/envisioned. You can find more info here: http://www.chcurc.org/dream/DevelopmentMap.htm ahh okay. I had not seen that development map until now...thanks for posting that. so where in the pipeline is this project?? ...I know they picked a developer, but what is the next step? Do they have any possible tenants lined up for either the "entertainment district" or the second phase of "calhoun street marketplace"?
  22. so random question... does this project include the piece of land across from Old St. George? what used to be there anyways? It's all fenced off now, buy there is tile flooring still visible, reminiscent of a fast food restaurant or something....
  23. part of the Hilton family YES, but NOT necessarily a Hilton. Actually, if you travel much you can tell what the brand is just from the rendering of the guest room, I just cannot say....
