  1. Nicker66, Do you know 100% for sure that PlasmaCare is planning on relocating to another Main St. location? If so, that is a problem. A big one.
  2. What's extra frustrating about this discussion is that these subsidized units could undoubetdly be rented to the public right now, likely at a premium....to people who would take care of the builings, spend money in the neighborhood, generate more taxable income, etc. The rental demand for housing for YPs and the like is huge right now, but there is simply not enough supply. The neighborhood will be unable to continue growing if more people cannot move down there. This is on top of the fact that subsidized housing brings a whole slew of other concerns with it...ones we don't need in OTR right now.
  3. Just an FYI for everyone, I ended up just putting it into the Capitol Square underground garage. It was $13 for Friday-Sunday while most hotel are around $25+/night and the corner lots are anywhere between $5 for a few hours and $12-15 overnight.
  4. "sick of dealing with entertainment venues and restaurants" LOL well given the space and the direction this neighborhood has taken, good luck with that... Anybody know what happened with Roxy's? Really would have liked to have seen them in there, too bad it's not going to work out.
  5. Are you sure about Roxy's? This was my thought as well, but the For Lease sign was recently put back up.... I "real businesses" and an attention to the feel of the street via some enhancements would pretty much take care of these problems. Moving the momemtum over to Main should be a key focus for 3CDC going forward because the rest of the neighborhood will suffer. It's a shame too becuase the best nightlife options are on Main and this area gets plenty of suburbanite traffic as well.
  6. This is 1130 Main that I am referring to. It has a newer facade on it...directly to the right (south) of Japps. http://goo.gl/maps/JtPA But that's just the thing...having some galleries open 1-2 days a month as many on Main seem to be does nothing for the street. It's not vibrant. There's not foot traffic like there should be. Quite frankly, there's no reason to go over there! Nothings open and it does not feel inviting.
  7. Main St. also feels a little bit...um, in 'desrepair' is the best way I can describe it. It does not have the newness factor of the Gateway Quarter. It's kind of dirty.....Many of those buildings are in need of a good paint job and there are still several boarded up buildings not used at all. There's still several storefront churches and social service agencies that add nothing to the neighborhood. It's generally far less approachable. Also, key spots have gone unoccupied for years. ie. the former Exchange space next to Japps, the empty PlasmaCare space, LucyBlue has been "coming soon" for awhile with no obvious construction, etc etc. It gets even worse the further you go north. Very stagnanant over there right now. ...and all of this should serve as a constant reminder that we are FAR from where we need to be. The GQ is just a very small piece of the puzzle and that needs to be replicated on a much larger scale for OTR to truly become the vibrant, self-sufficient neighborhood many people are working so hard for. And this is not just on Main. Vine has plenty of unleased retail space, and space that seems to trade hands every few months (ie. Old Park+Vine space)

  9. Just a few thoughts based on my recent time around the neighborhood... There are a few problem spots that really need attention as the momentum will shift over to WSP and further north of Vine in the coming weeks and months: -The corners of Elm/12th, the east side of Race (opposite the Park), and the corner park at Race/14th all have serious loitering problems from the homeless. I've seen some downright disgusting things take place in these areas over the past 2 months or so. This kind of activity cannot continue when the park opens and I hope the city plans to address it. -There's still drug and prositiution activity happening at Vine/15th across from Kroger. This corner seems to be a loitering hotspot. As Mercer and some of the other development opens hopefully this will take care of itself, but I'm concerned that this could be a distraction for condo shoppers looking up that way...
  10. Great news, but sad that Kroger won't be a part of this -- I think it's a bad move on their part not only because there is an untapped market of downtown residents currently leaving their neighborhood to shop, but also this is their HQ city! I mean c'mon! (I won't beat a dead horse here) That being said, TBH a small-format gorcery (a la Fresh & Easy (Tesco's US store), Taget City or Trader Joes) could be all we need. Bring on the renderings!
  11. Sharaton at the Capitol (formerly a Hyatt)
  12. I will be in Columbus this weekend, staying downtown. My hotel wants $25/night for parking. Where can I park cheaper and/or is there an area of downtown with free weekend street parking? Thanks in advance!
  13. Stayed there for a night a few years ago when my prior employer had a conference downtown. It was certainly tired then. For real! Hopefully this puts the heat on the Hilton, Millennium and Cincinnatian to consider upgrades as well.
  14. Oh FFS, that's the biggest cop-out load of BS I've ever heard. It's not like these guys are maintaining the REST of the building anyways.
  15. Don't know much about Shillito Place either way, but do stay away from Garfield Tower Apartments. I've heard nothing but horror stories from several people who lived there. I guess they have some serious management and cost-cutting problems there. I have a friend that lives in a newly-remodeled unit at Lytle Tower on the other side of DT (NOT One Lytle Place) and really enjoys it http://rookwoodproperties.com/residential/properties/lytle-tower/ Also try calling Urban Sites...don't go off their website, it's not always updated http://urbansites.net/ I also think I passed along the number of the guy who leased my apartment but it sounds like he might not have anything.
  16. Are you referencing Garfield Tower Apartments building specifically or another building in the 7th/Race area? The location is great and Piatt Park right there is really quite nice. Kind of a quieter area of downtown but still very walk-able to FS, the Banks and of course OTR as well.
  17. Also, found an article from last year that for some reason never was posted here. The last quarter or so reveals lots of details about the recent history of the property. Basically it sounds like it's sitting in the hands of a slumlord who bit off more than he could chew (he also bought Cincinnati Mall around the same time as this, so that probably speaks to his business saavy of lack thereof) http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/cincinnatihistory/Story.aspx?id=1378904
  18. At what point can the city step in with this property and force the owner to at least maintain the building? ...it's literally rotting and is quickly becoming an eyesore. It's truly going to be an embarassment for the World Choir Games due to its prominent location. Nearly half of the storefronts are vacant, the flashing is falling off the building, windows boarded up, overgrown shurbbery on the terraces, the terrible vinyl awning with the Crowne Plaza logo so skillfully duct-taped over....I could go on and on. I have to imagine that at this point the roof leaks, ventialtion systems are shot and the rooms are mold and mildew infested. It just makes me sad. This piece of property is as important at the Banks or 5th/Race IMO. In this article from February 2010, one of the owners said “We want to be quick about making a decision, but we want to make the right decision,” he said. “The carrying charges are huge, so we can’t take forever. Within three months, we should definitely have decided what we’ll do with the property.” Here we are two years later with absolutely no progress whatsoever. What gives? Very disappointing. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2010/02/08/story1.html?page=all
  19. MD88PILOT, I've always heard FLL is one of the lowest yield and lowest fare airports in the country because it's primarily leisure/cruise and heavily LCC? It would seem to me that MIA would offer better yields due to the business and international community there. Not saying your wrong, just hoping you could shed some light on that comment...
  20. For anyone unfamiliar with the United-Continental merger pains and why so many people are upset with the airline, this is a must read... United has really been getting lots of bad press lately... Merger pains for United Airlines leave passengers hurting United, Cleveland's dominant carrier, is the most complained-about airline in America by far, according to the latest statistics from U.S. Department of Transportation. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/06/merger_pains_for_united_airlin.html
  21. I posted this in the Banks thread, but I also think it's appropriate to mention it here as well... MLH and the Banks is prominently featured in Cleveland's Plain Dealer Sunday travel section today. Great writeup on Cincinnati and our renaissance. The cover photo in the print edition is from the terrace at MLH. Also lots of praise of OTR, our parks, and the arts here. It almost seems as if this Cleveland-based writer is a little jealous (especially her Fountain Square comment) ;-) http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2012/06/two_days_in_the_city_cincinnat.html
  22. ^ I would agree. It's incredibly outdated and in such disrepair it is truly an embarrassment for the city. I shudder to think of all the World Choir Games people this summer that are going to have to put up with that place for a week, eeeek. The group the owns it is Singapore based and clearly gives no f*cks about the place. I think demolition is more likely than an extensive remodel there at this point. I agree though that the economics for a W in the Terrace Plaza probably are not there, but the building would be perfect for it as W makes much of their revenue off their bars/restaurants and meeting space rather than guest rooms - the TP has some FANTASTIC space. I also have a feeling that the hotel to be announced for the Banks will be an Aloft. They have shown real interest in urban expansion, but favor new construction. Cleveland is getting one in the Flats redevelopment, so it would make sense if they came to Cincy too.

  24. Am I right to assume that all of these will be flown by regionals except SFO? Why so much extra capacity to ORD though? That makes me wonder if other stuff is going to be cut shortly and they want to see the feasibility of just funneling these pax through ORD...
  25. bahahaha! this is truly laughable. They best they can hope for out there is an aloft (W's watered-down limited-service suburban brand) I still maintain that a W would be absolutely perfect for the old Terrace Plaza building.
