anybody know if there will be streetscape enhancements when this project is completed? I imagine both Calhoun and McMillian would be due for sidewalk and lighting upgrades...

Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
Good progress -- an additional route to a major connection point for points west and south as well as additional international destinations. Too bad these are all still on ERJs for the time be, hopefully they will switch to mainline with time. United Airlines adding a dozen CVG flights http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/05/31/united-airlines-adding-a-dozen-cvg.html The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport said the new flight service will expand the number of daily flights to Newark from four to six. A second flight will be added on Saturdays. United’s expansion to Houston involves six additional weekly flights from the CVG Airport to Houston Intercontinental, boosting total daily flights from three to four.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I've been following the UA merger for awhile and they are just using SWA as a scapegoat here -- it's an apples and oranges international operation. This article explains it well: http://blog.chron.com/lorensteffy/2012/05/southwest-wins-hobby-fight-as-united-pouts-threatens-its-own-employees/ As for Cleveland, we're still very much in the "wait and see" (hope and pray) situation. I will say that the new UA management has made some major missteps in this merger, this IAH layoff fiasco being the latest of them, and that greatly concerns me

Back on the topic of CVG though --- Very impressed with the remodel in concourse A. Nothing groundbreaking of course, but it definitely brings the space in line with the "nicer" airports in the US. Free WiFi (that actually works!), nice restrooms with lots of light, and plenty of workspace with charging stations. Also, the interior of the jetbridges are wrapped in full color photography of the city/bridges/music hall, etc...kind of cheesy at first but definitely great for visitors. The next hurdle is getting some additional service to fill all those extra gates. I suspect the likely candidates are US to PHX and maybe SWA comes down from DAY. Also, glad to see that UA has added mainline A320 service to ORD as well.

Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
"...media sees the financial benefit to being on the positive side of the stories..." I've been saying this for ages! But then again, I can't complain. The suburban dollar is just as good in OTR and DT as mine and I'm happy to have it here.

Right! 3.5 to 4 max. I think you're wrong about this...Google Maps shows downtown Cincy to downtown Cleveland at 250 miles or 4.5 hours. Sprinkle in a little Columbus rush hour and a bathroom break and you're well into 5 hours. I know I've been able to to it at 4 hours with no traffic or weather, but most times (leaving at rush hour) it takes closer to 5. And I drive 70-75 as much as I can.

Does anyone know what the LF look like on UA's CVG-CLE route? This route IS long enough to justify from a business travel perspective (it can take around 5 hours from Cincinnati to Cleveland driving) and CLE has lots of domestic UA connections available. It's also a far more convenient place to connect than ORD, IAD, DEN, etc.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
sitting in an airport bar in CVG right now as I write this -- group on business people flying back are talking about how great downtown is and how it feels so much cleaner, safer and alive compared to cbus and cleveland. If I had time I'd buy them a drink right now.

no you're spot on. we're just a few year late to the ballgame. oh, and then there's that place called corryville as well :-)

Interesting article about a mixed-use project in the Atlanta area that also just landed a Yard House. It's my understanding that retailers tend to look for a certain threshold of demographic/income-level when scouting new locations, so perhaps some of the others mentioned in this article have also shown interest in the banks? http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/real_talk/2012/05/north-american-lands-new-avalon-stores.html

Looks like there's some good stuff happening on W McMillian as well-- A new salon has opened on the north side of the street by the art supply place in a space that was vacant the entire time I lived up there (~5 yrs). It looks kind of modern inside with lots of exposed brick and nice lighting fixtures. The former Korean place called iZen is now a "sushi and nightlife cafe"...whatever that means. Construction continues (slowly) on the new Chicago Gyros space A property management/rental office has moved into the former Jarusalem Restaurant space

natininja, you make an excellent point...one that I was thinking about myself. I actually think having the stadium there could have hurt the city's image more. I can just imagine pictures in national newspapers and on ESPN of the Red's stadium on fire, people protesting outside. At the end of the day, our baseball team is part of the "brand" of the city -- it's oftentime what people from other cities and countires associate with Cincinnati first and foremost.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
If we're being honest here, the Banks apartments remind me of a Hyatt Place or Hilton Garden Inn in the suburbs or by some airport somewhere in terms of build quality and hilarious Ikea-chic interior decorating. I think they are kind of pricey now...I wonder what people will think if $300/mo is added. And has anyone seen the pool before? LOL.

^^^ makes sense. Lots of corporate transplants living in there as well as Reds/Bengals players that live there during their season but actually have a home and family elsewhere. And my friend that lives in the north building says it's not nearly as young as one might think...he believes he is one of only a few people in his mid-20's living there. If you've ever been in the parking garage for the apartments, you can tell it's a pretty affluent crowd.

Those are some of the best/most hilarious restaurant names used on the rendering: bakery corner = Corner Bakery portlands best = Seattle's Best coffee los padres = ??? crash burger = Smash Burger Anyways though, I was up there last night and there is some real progress happening. They are clearly wasting no time since we've had good weather lately and had a mild winter. This is really going to change the feel and energy level of that area (for the better)

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
so, it sounds like the area west of Roebling might be a dead spot indefinitely (am I understanding this correctly?)

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
I'm most excited about the (blue), phase 4. That will really expand the breadth of the park and provide access to the... erm, 'riverfront' part of this riverfront park! (It also looks like this is the phase with the boat dock)

Had no idea Post was ever looking at this site! They have a HUGE presence in Atlanta in terms of rental housing....if you're looking to rent anywhere in ATL you'll probably look at their units. I wonder if they'd ever consider looking at Cincinnati again as more people start to move into the city? They have a good reputation and take care of their properties, use good materials and are generally a professional company.

Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
Disappointing news: DL officially loaded the PHX cancellation today. This is a very large market to loose and has both business and leisure implications for the tri-state. Seeing as how PHX functions as both a popular business and leisure destination and has year-round draw, I doubt this one is a seasonal cancellation. It also makes you wonder what's next in line to get chopped? I bet there were plenty of people on this flight coming to CVG to connect, no? Also, United will cancel CVG-CLE starting in August. This is also a disappointment as it removes a ton of connection opportunities for CVG passengers on United. UA flyers will now be forced to go through much more congested hubs like ORD, EWR and IAD. Finally, DL announced today it will acquire AirTran's 717 fleet to replace RJs and DC-9s. What this means for CVG, I don't know at this point.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
I also think things will be a bit better once all the plants mature and settle into the space...everything just feels too new. So, what exactly does phase 2 entail? Looks like they already poured the steps by the main st. fountain to go down to the river. What else?

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
Was down there both Friday night for the opening and again last night for Asian Food Fest - the atmosphere was nothing short of electric! I had to pinch myself as a reminder that I was still in Cincinnati! The fountains are amazing..lots of kids playing in them and dogs running around. Great atmosphere. This weekend the Riverfront probably had some of its largest crowds all year without a Reds or Bengals game taking place. I will say, however, that the lack of trees and other greenery around the Banks and particularly outside TKILTBAG is one area that improvement is needed. The place kind of feels like a concrete maze without anything to break up and soften the all the concrete and asphalt.

A Tale Of Two Bars
Interesting read... Lots of people in the first article referencing MODA on w. 25th that was shuttered by Cimperman a few years ago for very similar issues. Obviously that turned out to be a smart move because look at that neighborhood now. What most people don't know is that MODA, in it's first year or two of business actually catered to a much more sophisticated, international crowd. It had one of the most state of the art sound systems in the country and regularly hosted DJs from Europe that hardly ever stopped in Cleveland in favor of NYC, Toronto, San Fran etc. There was a shift in their business model or promoter because they started doing hip-hop nights and of course, as we know, it was all down hill from there. So that being said, the "black heterosexual non-professional clubgoers market" are the ones effectively ruining much of the nightlife expansion opportunity in Cleveland. It's a cultural and socioeconomic thing... I don't get it. I'm not trying to be racist, but these people bring so much baggage and filth with them, it's unbelieveable. All of this is very unfortunate because it essentially locks the doors for LEGITIMATE investors that want to open a nightlife establishment. Permits become out of reach. Communities get cold feet when a cabaret license is applied for, or the word "nightclub" is used. I happen to think this area has some of the best industrial/warehouse spaces in the city that could have a possible reuse into nightlife spaces if/when more gentrification happens over there....but as we know, it's probably not going to be so easy anymore.
